And, for a real cheap, 90% parts built, scratch-builder, I have a Kitfox 1 clone that I am practically giving away for $2500, OBO, with 80 hour 532 - NO wings, but includes fixtures for making ribs, and one flaperon.

    Leni,
Look closely at the Avid V-fins - Notice the extra brace.
And, I'll bet that the other one is banned on TKF!

I agree due  to the wash out in the wings.  You can cross the line though and if you get too much, they try to drag you out of the air and the climb / cruise really suffer!

Mine is set 5" aft of CG, but I think I am going to move them another inch or two for those days that I may add a bit more to the baggage area

Damn, those look like 1320 floats.  Do you have any info on that plane or owner?

Here is an Avid with lower twin ventral fins. I have done the same but haven't tried them yet.

A test pilot friend of mine says you need rudder pedal pressure to steadily increase as you press either of them, other wise you haven't got enough ventral fin area.

Oh and just an update for everyone.  If you have the grove gear and 600x6 tires you cannot clear the 72" IVO prop!  ask me how I know!  It's new tire time.  I'm going to pick up some 21x800x6 tires this week hopefully.

I do have a tiny tach to compliment the analog tach and surprisingly the Rotax tach is only 50 RPM's off or so, it's hardly noticeable.

Ditch the tachometer too when you go to a new panel and find a spot in your line of sight to mount a tiny tach. My needle tach was 600rpm off. I've had tiny tachs on my last two flying machines for lots of hours and never had one fail. It doubles as an hour meter too for engine mx items.

The step is 4" aft of the aft C of G, and the wing is 6 degrees + to the top of the floats. Add 8 degrees for the float stems and you get 14 degrees available for take off.
It should be OK, I have watched a few Avids taking off of water and they all look like they need more + incidence.

Leni, don't know if you are aware of where that pic came from, but it's for sale in Ketchikan. Has a 912 in it, wants something like $21 or $22,000 for it. It's on barnstormers. Jim

Legal??  There is no "gross weight" on an experimental in the US... There may be a manufactures recommended weight, but there is no "gross" weight.  don't forget, we normally get a 100# allowance when you put the floats on the plane.   Example, a stock PA-12 goes from a 1980 gross on wheels to 2080 on floats.  I think a lot has to do with the fuse taking the landing loads.  They are more spread out on floats versus on wheels.

I have flown my Avid at... umm... ahhh... full load.. as long as I can get it off the water and still climb, I am good to go

The floats looks great on your plane!  Can you tell me where you set the CG of the plane in relationship to the step on the floats.  And what AOA did you set the wing at?

    Thanks

The prop turns faster.. and it dont take much.  A cruise prop on a super cub would be say a 76X58.. The climb prop (sea plane prop) would be an 82X41 or X42.  The difference in take off performance of these two props, is literally the difference in drag racing your lawn mower versus a top fuel dragster.

The cruise prop your lucky to turn 2100 on take off.  The climb prop your looking at 26-2700 on take off.  The prop turns faster, the engine actually is allowed to make full HP rating because your letting it get to the happy RPM and the plane climbs much better.

Gross weight of an Avid float plane
I have just completed converting my Mk 4 Avid to straight Aerocet 1100 floats.
The complete weight is 709 lbs, with a gross of 1150 lbs. That doesn't allow much for a passenger with full tanks, say about 58 lbs, (It gained 100 lb after the conversion)
Are any of you flying a similar package? What weights did you get?
I am running a 618 Rotax and minimal accessories, can't see how you could have a 4-stroke and amphibs and be legal at all.
    Comments would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Larry, you got it.  The biggest reason to move them forward is so you can stand on the brakes and not nose it over.  It does work against you on take off though as the increased weight on the tail makes it hard to get the tail up... so they go to bigger tail feathers and then you have more drag... Shit, where it the happy medium here

Yep, but dump the fin under the fuse and just use the ones on the HS. but put them top and bottom.

it weighs about 10lbs, including all wiring and hoses.

I have it all listed for $350.  There is a used 2000c on ebay listed for $350 and it doesn't come with the Gizmo dock or anything.  I'm giving you the gauges too even though the turn coordinator has a burnt up bearing I think its a good price but I'm also open to offers.

The GPS itself doesn't weigh much at all, nor does the antenna and it works great

Looking to build? Coyote, Magnum, Avid kits for sale
First time in a while I've seen 3 unstarted Avid type kits for sale on Barnstomers at the same time. They are scattered all over the country. The gear on the coyote is beef! Too bad it's still Bungee gear.

Any chance you can get that stuff on a digital scale just to satisfy my curiosity? I'm sure you could sell that stuff for a decent chunk of change to another experimental guy.

    Forward Gear Placement

    Advantage:
It will allow for higher braking forces without nosing over onto the prop
Moves larger tires foreward from the door(s)

    Disadvantage:
More wieght on the tail wheel and empanage
Makes the plane more forward CG

Help me out with more for this list...
