Just went back up and looked at the bare bones fuselage. There isn't a forward attachment point like an Avid has. Almost looks like the fus. bends in at that point so a third leg wouldn't work. Extra bracing in the gear though. Jim

I'm still real happy with my 21s. At $100 apiece is pretty nice too...

Yeah. I thought that gear looked pretty scary, too.

Are you saying the 26's are perfect for AVID or for 185.  I am considering the Goodyear 26" tundra tire.

    Thanks

YES... 31's are almost too big for a 185. 26's are about perfect.

    Leni, Randy, Anybody,

Are 30" x 13 x 6  Airstreak Tundra Tires to large for an AVID?

Notice where the landing gear attaches? If there were 3 attachment points like an Avid has, they would be using the back 2. Tires must be about 8" in front of the front attachment. Wonder what kind of stress that puts on things. Pretty plane though! Jim

Mine seems to like 6000 best for cruise at 85 mph true airspeed.  It is a Classic 4 kitfox with a 503.  I get a lot of caustic comments about my 503 but I love it.  The installation was just plug and play.  It hits 6700 wide open straight and level.  6250 full power climb at 60 mph 800 feet per minute solo.  The airplane is very sensitive to weight and density altitude, but the best feature is it is affordable for me.

If you get ramp-checked, how would they ever weigh a plane on floats? floating scales?

I have heard very little about the 503 engine - Nice hearing of your high hours and success.
Photos look great - Looks like ideal state for floats. Think you could get a boatload of that non-booze gas down the river to Missouri?
    Thanks for posting,

I agree! They would not have sold gobs of them if they had that many issues. What ratio are you mixing at? I've been running the Amsoil Saber Pro at 100:1 (premix no injection) for close to 300 hours now. I'm thinking about going to Amsoil Interceptor though at 50:1. The only problem is my 40 hour cross country trips where I'd have to carry twice as much oil with me. Just worried about the bottom end not getting enough oil even though I know several guys that have gone well past TBO using 100:1. NIce looking Avid!

Awesome to see that many hours on one of these planes. It's amazing how many experimentals there are out there that are 10 years old with 150 hours on them. Isn't 6300 about wide open? I was lucky on my Powered Parachute my 503 cruised level at 4800 rpm. I could fly for 2 hours on the 6 gallon tank on the back of my seat and still have a little reserve. It was a single carb too.

Thanks Ed. Ya, we have booze plants all over southern Mn. But we can get booze free gas in just about every town around.  That is a picture of a local lake that is around 9 miles long. LEAF replaced every moving part in the engine, bored it out, rebuilt the gear box, fuel pump, both carbs, new plug wires, plugs and caps. $3900. So far my total rebuild costs have been around $7500 since 1996 and 956 hrs later.

Nice looking bird in the soybean field - (Correction, an Obama Diesel Fuel field) -And, I noticed the Moonshine field in the background - Wondering how much the rebuild cost?
Were those photos of a mosquito pond, or a waterway?

Nicest evening of the summer so far.
Six hours on my 503 after my 3rd rebuild. I'm now at 956hrs TT. I am running my engine at 6350 for cruising. It sure fllies much better at this rpm. This time around I had Brett at LEAF rebuild it for me.

So far, just fine. Use synthetic oil so the RAVE valves don't stick and all is OK. (Made stainless RAVE slides) I think these engines got a bad rap for no good reason. Never had a 582 to compare. I completely rebuilt it myself, been an outboard mechanic most of my life.
