This looks like something Steve Henry would do in his Highlander except he would of been taxiing at 30 mph with his tail up. Looks like he get's hung up in the trees at one point.

    Cord line
What angle is your cord line and how long is your average takeoff roll. Will be building new gear and am looking to do it right first time. Since all our planes are the same but different I thought pooling the info might give me some direction in the construction of the gear. Thanks for all your advice, it has clarified and simplified my rebuild.

Been there done that once! I also had a passenger. Some nasty winds came up while my Dad and I were visiting a one way backcountry strip. As soon as I got above the treeline I got hit with a nasty tailwind and began descending into rising terrain at full power. I finally gave up and used all the energy I had left to rack it onto her wingtip and go the other direction. As soon as I got some wind over the wings she started climbing again. That is bad bad feeling settling under power at any time but especially close to the ground! It goes against all your instinct to push the nose into the trees but you obviously did the right thing.

Great stuff Jack....Thanks for posting! Sorry I missed your Bday party that we spoke about earlier this year things got hectic on that trip home with my 3 year old in tow. I saw some pictures of that counter rotating heli fighting the fire that was in Orofino last week. Cool design! Hope things are going well in the Valley. Say hi to Wicks, Otey, and Dean for me.

    Retirement job (term used loosely)
Been driving the Peterbilt tanker around for my daughter and son-Inlaw (Central Copters--Bozeman Mt.). For a couple of years on fire suppression so flying a lawn chair from one shady spot to the other is about the toughest part of the job most of the time . Started in June- Pagosa Springs Co.,Southfork Co., Creed Co. (Elevation 8853 ft.), Hamilton Mt. Then McCall Idaho. Basically home-hauled logs this area in real life. Anyway shot a few pics maybe someone might be interested in.trim.TS1idq.MOVtrim.TS1idq.MOVtrim.TS1idq.MOV

    First Closer Than Comfort Experience
This is a good video for everybody.  I came in for landing to hot.  Aborted and turned out.  Tail wind got behind me and tendency was to pull back on the stick.  I started dropping into the trees and I remembered to nose forward at last minute and was able to get enough speed to pull out.  Wheeeeeee.  My prayers were answered.

I actually thought that I ordered the double fork. The perils of on line ordering. I think it will be ok, eventually I hope to go to the 25 inch tires and the taller gear.

Here is a picture of mine if it helps. I know it's too late now but you should of went with the Dual Fork set up. It sits a few inches lower than the single arm set up.

This was version 2. Here is a link to when I ditched my Maule and single spring set up.

What would be a recommended distance for the tailwheel. I am going to put the 21" tall tires on. Currently have the 8:00x6 waffles on it. I think that should raise front by about 3 inches. I am a little worried about it.

Windy Landing For Super AVID at Gold Mine 2430 msl
Randy tested his skills in about 15 knots I would guess when landing his plane at the gold mine.  A gust hit him just as he was about to flare.  Good job Randy.  Sorry the video is so shaky.

Your TW spring looks really long! If you bolt that Matco on there it looks like your prop will be in the dirt. Any plans on cutting your spring down? You'll see a big difference in takeoff distance when you lose that angle of attack on the wing. Make sure your springs are fairly snug with the Matco. It uses a little tension to relock unlike the cam on the Maule.

New tail wheel. Looks twice as big as old one. Hopefully will make life easier.

Good thought, I think I will cut out some rubber floor mats and lay on top of them for wear.

What are you calling pretty rough places? I haven't found a place yet that I had any business being at that my Nanco's couldn't handle. The 26's on Kitfox 7 seem to work pretty sweet. A guy on here put 29's on his 582 powered Kitfox and I don't think he liked the hit in performance. Herman....?? The thing with bigger tires is they also tend to equal bigger cahones and get you into trouble. The 29" Airstreaks are $2100 a pair. I know they are lighter than full on bushwheels but a 29" bushwheel weighs in at 31lbs a piece!

I have 21's.  However, I fly into pretty rough places.  Just considering something with more cush.  Thanks for your replys.

I am using the same tires as Larry is, with about 9lbs of air pressure. I like them also, but I do not fly out of rough strips very often.

Sounds like a good idea. I'd weld on tabs to mount it to rather than adel clamps, though. You will want to mount it with screws so that you can open it to access torque tube or rudder bar mounts.

    tcj,
Sounds like You have your 503 Kitfox for the same reason I have my 503 Avid. You are so right about the 503 installation, bolt it on and go. Its a simple light weight, good running and flying airplane that doesn't cost a arm and a leg to fly and own. With the pitch I have set on my IVO prop on take off I am turning around 6250. I set my cruise at 6300. With those settings my ground speed is about 71mph. Brett at LEAF said you can run the 503 at 6500 all day long. The only bad thing is I am burning around 5.5 gallons an hour. Not much range with my plastic tank inserts. They only hold 10.4 gallons. Don't get me wrong I still like other installations, but how I have mine set up works perfect for me, and it flies great. Sunday I took a freind for a ride. Me at 200lbs, him at 200lbs, and around 9 gallons of fuel made us real heavy. Under those conditions I have to run it close to wide open. On landing I like to come in under power because with the extra 200lbs in it it sinks like a rock on final. So I am flying it on to the runway. Seems this is much easier on the gear if you miss judge the flare a little, especially when your sink rate is that high. I'll have to post a video of take off, circle and land in 50 seconds.

I am thinking about installing a single piece of aluminum from the firewall to behind the seat with the cut outs for the bungee cords. This would seem to solve the jigsaw floor board at the same time as giving some support for my feet.

Any thoughts. Do not think I need inside floor boards. Can cover with something waterproof.
