    100LL
Does anyone here have any information on burning premixed 100LL in the 582?

I've been trying to figure out how to X-Country my KitFox but no one here in NC or the surrounding area have MOGAS.  Looks like 100LL would be the only option if I wanted to venture away from my home airport.

I just hear all this talk of "oh it causes buildups which increases compression and causes detonation and you will DIE DIE DIE".

I'm just searching for the truth.

I have also switched to a mixture of 70:1 with 1-2 OZ of Marvel Mystery Oil per 5 gallons.  Seem's to work well, doesn't drop the octane rating of the fuel as much and it smokes ALOT less.

The local guys are burning 100:1 ratios with even less MMO as me.  They all say it works fine for them

Your right Leni. A follow up post revealed he had installed the cable wrong causing the arm to quit moving.

    Hi!

What problem are you trying to solve? I have some experience repairing these tanks if they leak. If they are already installed in the plane it is probably best to go in from the bottom as opposed to top. If constructed to plan there is plywood on the top but there is easy access to the bottoms.

IMHO, there is no good way to make them ethanol proof if that is your goal. Evenually any coating you apply will be problematic and eventually delaminate if you use ethanol. It is horrible stuff.

So how many have locked up do to cold seize, or operator error and not caused by the oil pump?

The oil pump failing is the least likely way someone is gonna burn up a 582..

My guess is the tach lead is not wrapped around both plug wires going to the same cylinder.. If your using the tiny tach.. If your using the normal rotax analog tach, it's anyone's guess, they give everyone fits. You can hear a 300 rpm drop easy, and a 1000 is way out of line. Check the plug wires too! I replaced mine and now there is no drop between mags.

At 1000' I burn 5.3 gph at 6000 indicating 95 on the dreamometer asi... Gives me 75-80 mph ground speed on floats and 1150 on the egts with the 582.

Ed, I got a picture a couple days ago of the almost completed adapter plate for the 800. As soon as Dave completes that and gets the fly wheel machined, I can start the engine mount and exhaust mods... It's gonna be a fun machine when I get that stuffed in the nose!

The guy I spoke with who has a lot of experience with 670's and 583's told me this about fuel burn. He said ya it'll burn 3.5 gph if you keep it at 5000 rpm but that's like having a muscle car with a 505 big block in it and never going above 2000 rpm between shifts. If you put a hot rod motor in your plane your going to want to use the power! Even Rotax Rick will tell you that if you run a 670 hard it'll burn up some fuel...A LOT of it! With the exhaust and carb set up people have developed the power is a lot more linear than it used to be but keep in mind that engine was never designed to run at 5000-5500 continously like you would if you were on a long range cruise. I am sure the 670 is happy as a clam at 7000 rpm making tons of power and burning up tons of gas hence my comment about the WOW factor on takeoff but after that you basically have 582 power again. We all want more power but at what cost?

How much gas are you burning in your 582? I flight plan for 5 an hour at 70 kts and that is conservative most of the time. A fuel computer is an invaluable tool. I found that with my set up I was burning 5.5 gph running it at 5800 rpm and cruising at 85 mph. By just backing the power off to 5600 the fuel burn went down to well under 5 gph and I only lost a couple of mph. Every plane has that sweet spot where it takes a lot more power and fuel to overcome the drag and pick up just a few mph. I discovered this concept in my truck too. I installed an Scangauge II to watch diagnostics while pulling my 6500 lb trailer and find the best speed to run to get the best mileage.

Bugged out of OSH about 5pm Sun. and got home today at 6pm. Long azz drive but worth every minute of it. It was without a doubt one of the best weather wise to my recollection. Nice seeing the friends again, Will try to find some good pics to post...

Is he running the 670 in an avid where its upside down or right side up
in a fox? In an Avid the exhaust valves will carbon up.
I have the 670 exhaust for a Fox and it fits inside the round cowl

Thanks Paul,I thought I had read that the Kevlar was hard to cut - didn't know about sanding.
I worked with fiberglas at Chrysler for nearly 30 years making fixtures - They used Ren 9410, if I remember right - don't have a clue as to what was in it - didn't mind using it, until time to cut and grind, then it was an itch! I used West System epoxy on a boat after retiring - Didn't bother to read that either. Don't know what we used in school for vacuum bagging - just know it was epoxy and there was no catalyst involved in any that I used. Now everyone knows exactly how little I know about it. I still have 2 books from school on composites - Maybe should read them!
I still want to learn about Carbon Fiber someday - Hard to believe "stronger than steel"?
If I have any leaks, I think I will try the Caswell sloshing - sounds good and simple - I like simple!

The gray foam tubes that are used for waterpipe insulation are great - already split down the middle and stick back together - You can cover with something if you don't like the color, or get the tubes that kids use in the swimming pool in lots of colors, but you have to cut and glue them.Anything helps to keep your head from being dented - Like the helmet that everyone hates!
I have a $600 helmet that will only be worn for the first test flight!

I may still do this in the future. More power is great and all but 4.5gph cruise is what I need! My 582 burns way too much fuel

Bob is sounds like most of the issues people are having is tuning related, having to wire the Rave Valves into a fixed position, and getting the exhaust system set up. A friend of Larry's had a couple of engine outs using one trying to get it tuned. Could just be a lack of 2 smoke set up knowledge who knows. I'll be really curious to see what starts popping up after time.I am going to need to make a decision on rebuild or trying something else with mine probably next winter. I would love to be able to climb out hanging on the prop but it's not worth it if it takes a 100 hrs of screwing with it to get it reliable and a bunch of work modding my plane to bolt it in. Keep us in the loop on your install.

    Mag Check
What is happening when I turn my key one click to left for mag check and the rpm drops 300 rpm (normal) and then another click to left and rpm reads 1000 rpm higher but engine does not change (abnormal).

    Thanks

I think this is why if you are premixing the oil injection system needs to be completely removed.  What if the oil injection pump seizes?  Yes the gear is only plastic but why take chances.  I completely removed the cable from the airplane and took the oil injection pump off the engine.

the tubes go down the center between the seats so your head will not hit them I'm 5'10" and don't hit them anyway but with a headset on it will just about rub against the lexan so I want a tad bit more room to make it more comfortable, I then plan to put foam around the tubes to keep from banging them too hard in the event of a rough landing. I have to have my seat higher than most with this same airframe to accommodate the flapperon mixer which I have relocated under the left seat to allow for more baggage.

Yet another guy who ended up out in the weeds after his oil injection system failed. Another reason to premix!! This one was in a Powered Parachute.

I built the cowl for my Q-2 using a Kevlar sandwich that you are suggesting Ed.  The one bad thing about Kevlar is that if you try to sand into it you get the "Kevlar fuzzies" which are hard to deal with.  The fibers stand up and resist being tamed again without covering them with a buildup of glass or micro.  This probably is not an issue for a tank where cosmetics is not that important.  Oh and it does take special shears to cut Kevlar.  All that said I am happy with the cowl but there was a few times I questioned my choice of the Kevlar sandwich when making changes to the cowl.

AK 670 Powered Kitfox on Barnstormers
There's a Rotax Rick 670 powered Kitfox in Fairbanks for sale on Barnstormers right now. Any of you guys familiar with the plane? I'm still trying to figure out if this engine is a viable option or not. I'm hearing a lot about it but I've yet to see or hear from anyone that is out flying behind one troublefree on a regular basis. I spoke on the phone with someone who has quite a bit of experience behind one and who I consider an expert and he said that the fun factor on an insane climbout is only good for the first 45 seconds but all the headache does not even come close to making it worth it if your looking to cruise for hours on end on multi state cross countries like I do.

A LOT of pay grades above me too! What I was referring to, was sandwiching CF or Kevlar between the layers of Fiberglas - Never tried this, and don't know squat about it - don't even know much about why to do it either - They never taught this at work or at AMT college. All I know is that CF is stiff and strong when cured, and Kevlar is tough and strong?....Any Epoxy and Laminate Engineers on here?
