As I walked through 'Paul's Woods' at OSH this year, I found myself wondering how he was doing. I knew he was well up there in years but wasn't aware of his health issues. Kinda makes me wonder if he wanted to see one last AirVenture before he passed. Quite a passionate vision and love for aviation he had to pioneer an organization like the EAA. My hat is off to the gentleman, he impacted so many lives in a positive way and leaves an amazing, lasting legacy.

    Cooling system
    Here is my cooling system.

    Anyone successfully running this configuration?

Today while running my idle checks, I noticed my water temps climbing, but ramping up the rpm would cool it off again. Feels like my coolant may be low. Shut her down and noticed my overflow bottle was full. Hmm. Ok.... I let her cool off a bit and then pulled the 5mm plug out of the top of the 90 elbow on the head. Dry. Blast. Topped off the coolant through that plug. Started her back up. Nice and cool. Shut down, pulled the plug again and I was able again to pour in a bit of water. I thought for sure she would have been pumped full of coolant after the last top off.

So what the best procedure to get the system purged?

Moderate success! I leaned out my 55's to the point where my airscrews were about to fall out. I installed the 45's and with two turns out, she now runs smooth around 2200-2300. She was so rich that the idle was 1800 and struggling. Now she idles at 2000 with some roughness, but i bump her up to 2300 and she is smooth. I'm happy with that. Much better than 3k! Happy, happy happy....

My midrange and wot seem to be fairly well adjusted. I do have a 50deg egt split at all throttle positions other than wot. My guess would be my sliders are slightly out of sync? Tomrs project

There is a machine shop in St. Louis that I have used that has a water jet. I will probably have my flap and aileron hangers cut there - I don't think I want my plywood submerged in water, especially since they have chemicals in the water there. And, they want too much money for the initial computer setup for a small job.
I will bite the bullet and spend a day on the bandsaw.

I've been led to believe that a water jet can cut the type of plywood for our ribs.  Do you have anyone in your area with a CNC waterjet?

Don't sweat it Leni,  you're doing a great job and the occasional punk doesn't diminish that.

On warmup, I get about to 185 on the water temp before the thermostat opens.  Then it varies between 170 to 180 while taxiing.  If I do a full power runup (eg when pitching my prop) I can get to 190 before backing down and cooling it off.  In the air I usually run around 170 in the summer.

Forget about CHT on a water cooled engine.  It doesn't mean much of anything.  In the air, I just watch the EGT's like a hawk.  I'm happy to have a HacMan system which allows me to dial in the correct mixture and EGT for most phases of flight.  Before I had that I had to avoid the mid-range RPM settings for the most part.

The 1-3 Kitfox tanks should work for you - They now make them moonshine proof.Guessing they still make them in either 6 or 12 gallon.

I met Randy Slitter and crew when they brought 3 of their planes from Kansas to our EAA chapter meeting in St. Charles, Missouri. Most comfortable seats I have sat on - Good communications and nice people.
Wish I had bought one years ago before going down the Kitfox roads.

Leni, Please don't sweat the small stuff - We all know that none of this stuff is private when put on the internet - as long as the hacker bastard don't screw up the site.

That looks like a better setup than outside the frame, or behind the exhausts.

Yep, late 1993 kit.  First flew in 98. Rans didnt seem to change models they just modified the planes as they came along.  The tail, trim and gear changed depending on when your kit was make durning the year.  No one at Rans seems to know or have a record of what or when on the earlier models.  I've found three different VNE speeds listed for the same airplane.
I have a 80 hp 912 sitting in the hanger to hang on it.  I want to get it flying with the 582 and see how I like it first.  If I dont like it was well as the KF I'll move it on and keep my eye out for a KF 4 or 5 project for the 912.

The latest info on my engine issues.  Changed tach guess what, shes turning about 6800 static.  I"ve repitched prop to bring it down to about 6200 static.  It will run fine about 140-160 degrees at 3000-4000 rpm,  I can run it up and down the runway with higher power but it wants to run the water temp up to 180 or so.(guage is right, I checked it against the kitchen therometer)   It will cool back down if I let it idle about 2300rpm.  Does that sound too far out of limits?  It should cool better in the air right?  It's mid 80's here today and humid.  Funny thing is the cyl head temp is about 150 or so and the EGT's are down around 850-900.  I'm sure that's telling me something but I don't know what.  No one around here knows sqwat about a 582 so I'm on my own.  I sure appreciate you guys inputs.
I listened to the EAA's webinar on "Is your two stroke about to fail" but about the only thing I came away with is buy a new one every 400 hours and sell the old one.  Well I'm the guy with the old one!!

    thanks

High country these are little bitty fairings for a 1/2" tube. I am just doing my horizontal stab struts with them. They measure 1 5/8" wide and are really flimsy....weight is only a few grams. Sorry for the confusion.

fairings look nice but how are you to get them onto our struts? what is the weight gain? I would think you could make the 1" fairings work with our 7/8" struts if you could get them on

Been slowly making progress on the Avid I now have 4 x-coats of EkoFill on the fuselage and 3 x-coats on everything else. the spraying goes fairly fast but it takes a while to sand. Its been taking me about 4-5 hrs to sand each coat on the wings between spraying but so far it is coming out very nicely. We had 70+ mph winds last night that took my paint booth for its first flight however so it will be a while before I can finish spraying... that and all the wildfires surrounding us right now anyways I don't have all up to date photos but here are some that i have. I chose to stitch the tail as well as the wings. its good to be done with the fabric work. and yes the pics are taken in the kitchen what better place to work on your plane than by the fridge and in front of the A/C

Rans is a first class operation! I checked my buddy out on his s-6, and in doing so we had a couple of questions about the plane. I called and talked to the receptionist, she said everyone was busy she'll have someone get back to me. Yeh right I thought. An hour later Randy "Rans" Schluter calls me back and patiently answered all my questions! Great Company!!!
