The theory was to angle the vertical stabilizer to the left a little bit, so you didn't have to hold so much right rudder because of the precession of the propeller. Sounds like someone bit off a little too much angle on the early Avids. Probably 1/2 inch offset would have been enough. However, this will not work for all flight conditions.
The simple cure is to make a small aluminum tab, maybe 2 inches wide and 4 to 6 inches high and rivet it to the rear tube on left side of the rudder at about center height - a slight bend to the left will offset the rudder to the right, and make your bird fly straighter - experiment to get the bend so you can fly with feet off of the rudder pedals - which my instructors chewed my butt for a many times - seems like you are supposed to hold your heading with the pedals - if you have a heading?

P.S. Please round the corners on the tab - generously.

With flying 70 hrs a year, hanger rent, ins, $4000 overhaul every 6 years, gas, I have around $50 an hour.

    Travis,
I know little about the Avid tank/lines setups - but on a Kitfox without the extra hole near the top of the tank, the vent line can be run from the top of the header tank to a "T" fitting where the top of the sight gage connects to the wing tank.

I received my insurance without being an EAA member and I only had 12 hrs tailwheel time. I just had to get a checkout from a CFI in type and then had to prove that I had the skills to not kill myself by flying 10 hrs solo.

Depending on the serial number of your plane the horizontal stab is probably not square either. I was surprised while I was taking the offset out of my vertical stab how far off the horizontal was(almost 2")

Guys, this is on a c model avid and the wing tanks butt against the butt ribs. There are no connections to the top of the tank.

I wonder why AVID mounted the vertical stab out of line.

Falcon took me with 5 hours of tailwheel and maybe 250 total time.  It's gotten cheaper every renewal.  Now I have full hull coverage for the same price as what I started with only liability.

I've never figured my cost per hour.  Too depressing to try.  If I have some gas money I dump it in and go.  If I don't, I don't.

Lots cheaper than a shrink and better mental health benefits.

Avemco insurance is who I recommend and use. They insured me with low time. Good folks. With the Hac, I can make the 582 run better and MAYBE save a half gallon an hr. Joey saves a good bit with his on cross country. The best thing I've found is to pull the power back. Bryce

    Travis,
According to Kitfox, the vent line is to be run between the right wing tank and the header tank, in theory, this connects both wing tanks and the header tank to prevent an airlock in the header.

Well Joey, Some of us old Vets have to do the IMPORTANT things, instead of flying puters all day! Just sounds like false advertising to me.Leni - What the heck is "Kitty hair Bondo"? Is that an Alaska thing, something like hoarfrost, or Mukluk?

I just entered a new quote on the EAA's website.  I'm a non-member due to financial constraints, I also just let my AOPA membership expire.  Last time I applied for insurance (4-5 months ago) I was denied due to lack of time.  I have 180 hours, 40 airplane, 15 tailwheel.  Low in retrospect but what kind of hours are they looking for Tailwheel?  40?

Also if anyone has direct experience with the HACman system, please PM me, I'd like to ask a few questions.  I've been told the 582 can save as much as 20-30% in fuel by using the HACman, I'm skeptical.

There are less calories in the light bondo but the regular taste better.

Try Falcon Insurance. That is who my insurance is through. You can get a quote off of the E.A.A.'s website.

If I could afford to fly 100 hours a year (which I can't) it would drop my cost down to $55.00 an hour which seems more inline with what other people tell me.

    fuel vent line
Anyone have pics of how there vent line is run? I have two wing tanks that I was thinking about teeing together with a valve on each and using the other header outlet for the vent but where does the vent line end so fuel doesnt siphon.

    Left Skidding Tendancey
Now that I am more comfortable flying my plane and don't have a dead mans grip on the controls, I am starting to notice things that I did not notice before.  I noticed that I have been flying with my right foot slightly depressing the rudder pedal.  When flying yesterday I took my feet off the rudder pedals and my plane has a left skidding tendency.  It doesn't matter which direction I fly.  If I don't touch the pedals at all it will come around and skid quite a bit.  The wings stay level so I don't need to adjust wash. I looked at the verticle stabilizer and sure enough it appears to sit slightly angled to the right when viewing it from the back.  If I measured it I bet it would be out of line at least a 1/2 inch if not more.

What do you recommend to fix the left skidding tendency on a Model C Avid.

    Thanks

    Cost Per Hour
Hey all, been trying to figure up my Cost Per Hour for my Kitfox IV with a Rotax 582.  I'm curious what kind of cost everyone else is calculating because mine is coming in a little high I feel.  Maybe I'm calculating something wrong.

Unfortunately on my limited budget I can only fly about 4 hours a month right now.  So a flight every other weekend.  Until my situation changes that's only 48 hours a year.

I am calculating my cost per hour right now at $80.10.  The largest cost is my hangar rent, approximately $37.50 per hour at 48 hours a year.  Obviously if I could fly more that cost would drop dramatically.

This does NOT include insurance, I have not been able to find a provider willing to insure my Kitfox with my low SEL Tailwheel time
