I saw a no-bama sticker on the back of a Jeep with an ak47 graphic. The fun part about it was that it was parked on a neighborhood street in Portland. No preaching to the choir here!

Kenneth,
welcome to the site - seems like you and I have a lot in common - well, maybe except the wild flying of Idaho and Utah - I'm just south of St. Louis, but lived in Alaska for about 10 years - AMT grad - been thru the commercial hours, but now old and retired and flying on drivers license as Private/Sport Pilot. Got a couple of projects for sale, and building my own design like the Kitfox.
I've been on this site for about a year now and have learned a lot from the flyers / builders on here.
Where in Land of Lincoln and Obama are you located? The shop is open afternoons if you want to visit.

End of year new guyHello all,
I just joined this site the past week looking for some information about Avid and Kitfox aircraft. I'm a commercial pilot with time in over 50 different makes and model and I'm looking for a step up for STOL performance from my Teenie Two aircraft (don't laugh until you see wht it can do)!
I found an Avid MK IV that's fairly local and it's "not for sale", at least not publically. He's asking $15,900 for it with a low time 582. But that's another post that will get up soon.
I've been interested in the Avid/Kitfox line because I actually do trailer my aircraft around the country from time to time just to fly in different areas and this would be ideal. Having grown up in Idaho and Utah I really want to do more back country flying, even though currently I'm living in the flatland (Illinois).
I have a lot of experience on the maintenance side of aviaiton as well as being a pilot. I'm a welder, fabricator and just like to build things. I've toyed with the idea of buying a partially built kit but haven't seen one for a decent price yet that was close enough to warrant going to buy.
There is a lot more information about me but I'm sure that will come out in time!
Keep up the posts, so far I'm really liking the information here, I just wish the search function would bring up what I need more often.
Kenneth

Bumper StickerWhat started out to be a job to replace the rear main seal in my son-in-law's 1971 F250 turned into a trip to the local home grown auto parts store to get new main and rod bearings once I popped the caps. The big chain stores don't seem to keep those in stock anymore.
Anyhow, not being concerned with being politically correct, he had a bumper sticker on the counter with a picture of Pres. Obama that said "Does this ASS make my truck look big?"
I think I am going to go there more often!

Lol, that is so yesterday. Real men stream all HD adult content to their 60" Quattron panels now. Anyhoo... just super busy with a major business redirection and other priorities these past few months. Was nice to have all our kids home from college at the same time over the Holidays, first time since last Xmas. Best Wishes to all for a Happy, Healthy New Year.

Kitfox 5 to early Skystar Kitfox 7 Grove mountsFor the one who asked about the Kitfox 5 mounting, I am attaching two views from my manual.
Note: The later Kitfox 7 by McBean Kitfox uses the same fuselage attachments, but has radius plates instead of this complicated mount.
For an alternative mount, see my posting of "Foxy Flapper Fotos" in the Kitfox IV section - I have heavier longerons, and used a .062 wall, 3/4 dia tube across the floor and welded in 3/4 x 1 1/2 x .062 wall rectangular tubing to attach the mounts to my Kitfox 4 clone fuselage. Mine is nosedragger. I have the same mounts shown in the attachments for my Kitfox 7 gear, but could use the radius plates instead.
I talked to Robbie Grove and he said that my mounts would not change the GW of the gear enough to worry about.

EDMO added a post in a topic 3 piece windshield
Thanks , that is exactly what I was looking for. I am thinking about adding aluminum strips from each side at the spar down on each side, instead of following the "V" of the braces like you did. If I can get it to work, I will post photos sometime in the future - thinking of looks like the Wittman Tailwind.

3 piece windshieldEd,
It has been almost a year and a half since I installed my new windshield and it shows no sign of cracking. My old one piece only lasted a few months. The bottom picture is my old windshield.

Great pictures Mike!. Looks like you are getting some quality time with your new bird. How many hours on it so far and how is it running?
Mark, thanks for the advice on flying the grandkids. I sure hope you and Megan can get back up here soon so we can do some more flying trips; mabe get some fishing in next time too!

Hi Ron,
I don't think glueing in the plywood panels will give the existing cross tube that runs between the cabane attach points enough lateral stiffness in all directions. That would really only stiffen it in the direction of the seat truss. It might be better to weld another tube along side it either in front or in back of it and stitch weld it to the existing tube. This will give it twice the lateral stiffness in the vertical direction and many times the lateral stiffness in the horizontal (front to back) direction.
I am not sure I understand why your welder was concerned about the additional connection tube not allowing the back tube to flex; stiffness with minimum flex would be good, along with the third point for load distruibution on the frame; but it looks pretty strong as is and the cross tube from front to back should be enough. The workmanship looks excellent.
I think you will like the additional height of the gear; not only for your cranium but also the AOA help on performance. Can't wait to hear further updates on your progress!

Man! I had the same problem as you before, and 2 things, I never EVER considered and were causing problems.....
1.- Ignition; mine is a Rotax 532; had the engine overhauled from a certified workshop, with papers and all, they told me is spot on, WELLLL, NOOOOO...... I had to do that myself. check and recheck, in your case is electronic, so it won´t be a problem however "CHECK"
2.- Propeller; initially, I had a 3 blade GSC, very common, as per book, pitch diameter, all very good..... took me more than 6 months, trial and error.. NOTHING couldn´t get it right......
but trying another propeller, 2 blade lighter, the engine perform way better, and sounds smother too. EGT are now spot on, all the time, and actually very difficult to change them for hot or cold in all ranges, is almost as stable as I ever seen it.
the #2 item, my mechanic friend said that perhaps the gear box is not tip top and need replace, but I will leave that alone by now, and hope to get a new one when I buy the 582.
Regards
Dimi3
