That's why Kitfox vents the header tank to the top of the right wing tank.

    Herman,

Please let us know your experience with them when you try them.  There has been some discussions on the VG's and several are running them as I am.  I have the Land Shorter VG's on my wings and under the HS; they did not reallyy lower the stall much but they did add aeleron authority and elevator authority so I like them and thought they were worth it.  I just ordered a set of STOL Speed VG's and plan to try them on the underside of the wing to see if they will add some speed to my undercamber wing; plus I added the ones to the underside of the tips at mid chord last weekend but have not flown it yet.  I want to try them before I add the ones to the underside of the wing so I can determine the change from each.

I have shutoffs on both tanks and run on one tank at a time once airborne.  If I have my tanks pretty full, the slight difference in pressure from the vents can cause one or the other tank to overflow (leak around the cap gasket) so I just run one at a time.  It also lets you run one tank completely dry(beyond visible in the tank) when you are stretchinbg your range and then you can visually monitor what you have left in the remaining tank so you can land with known fuel.

Also, like others have said on here, I just run vent ram air tubes on the tank caps and no vent on the header tank; about 850+ hours that way between 3 planes and no issues.  When I started fying Jeff's plane last year it was plumbed with the header tank vent.  I probably dumped as much fuel overboard as I burned for the first 5 hours or so until I convinced him to replumb it to vent the caps only.  The cap ram vents push fuel into the header tank and right out the header tank vent, coating the whole tail of the plane in gas and trashing the lexan, not to mention the pretty fire bomb it could make.

One other suggestion; do not extend the cap vent beyong the bottom of the cap.  It will just limit how full you can fill your tanks.  If the vent tube sticks into the fuel in the tank, it will push fuel out the vent instead of air when the tank needs to vent (when it heats up or whatever).

Wow, I'm glad you made it back OK.  Sounds like I flew cover on you the wrong direction.  Glad you could get a cell connection.  You should get a Delorme InreachSE.  I've been keeping mine with me in my pack so it goes with me in the plane or on the snowmachine.  Great to have that 2 way texting through the satelite; and your number is on my speed dial.

I shut mine off when I park it. I got a flat once in the hangar and all the fuel transferred to one side and overflowed the other tank and made a heck of a mess in the hangar. I also shut mine off if I am fueling from a pump so I know exactly what went into each tank so I can pour the right amount of oil in. I only have a shutoff on the left tank.

What would you do if you got a leak in one of your tank lines while in flight?  A valve would help very quickly!

Sorted figured that. I don't have valves on mine but thought it would be nice to add them for this reason.

I use them every flight. My plane flys a little left wing heavy so I burn gas outta the left side first. Some flights I may only want 5 gallons in the tank. You need all 5 in one side versus 2.5 per side. When the plane is parked one tank is always shut off so it does not transfer gas from side to side.

    Hall Vortex generators
I just noticed that Hall,  the makers of the disk style ultralight airspeed indicators also sell VG kits.
These VG's appear to be larger than VG's I have had experience with and are much easier to line up when installing.
Hall also has a 30 day money back policy.
Years ago I tried Micro Aero VG's on my Model 2 Kitfox (undercambered wing) and returned them since I did not notice much if any reduced stall speeds or improved aileron or elevator authority.
A while back Joey noted better elevator effectiveness with STOL speed VG's on the bottom of his horizontal stab.
Has there been VG discussion on this forum in the past?
Any reports on how the Hall VG's have worked on Avid or Fox undercambered wings?
How about Model 4 Kitfox semi symmetrical wings?
    Thanks
    Herman

    Leni,
Too bad that we voted for global warming while I was in Alaska, and you missed some of the fun
     - now all the snow and ice is down here - With 80% of the Great Lakes frozen over, and 300% of the usual snow,
Doug could ski across to Canada!

    Thanks ChrisB,
Someone will probably want your old gear - Nothing stock Avid or Kitfox even comes close to looking like the gear I am building - mine is really an oddball - sort of like putting flaps and ailerons on a Kitfox - just because I want to.  If I don't find some chrome plated tube or bar, then  I will go to my local supplier and buy some more 4130 and paint it.

Parking mostly - If plane is not level, then upper tank can overflow lower one.

I use the valves for maintenance reasons only.  Operations are always via both tanks.

I just re-read this post and am unsure if you are trying to construct a nosewheel assembly for a fuse that already has a weldment or if you are looking to build a nosewheel weldment into a tailwheel only fuse.

Just disregard what I said earlier if you are trying to build a weldment into the fuse.

Those of you with shutoff valves off each tank -- how often to you really use them? Operationally it seems to make more sense to feed simultanously off of both rather than creating a factor by switching back 'n forth.

I am in the process of adapting a Rans 800 nose fork assembly to my Flat Avid tri gear project. The nosewheel weldment is 1 5/8 OD and about 06 wall thickness. Once the bronze bushings are installed, the pivot shaft (been trying to figure out what to call it) requires 1 3/8 od tubing. I bought 058 and 125 thickness 4130 from aircraft spruce for the project so I would have different flavors to work with. I also bought some 1 1/4 OD X 058 to use as a doubler for the 058 if I decided to go that direction.

The 058 seems not substantial enough and Avid ended up specifying a doubler after a few broke early on. The 125 just feels too heavy and way overkill once I had it in hand so I ordered some 090, and the 090 is due to arrive tomorrow. I think that will be the "right" size and strength for the nosewheel steering shaft and what I will use with the modified Rans fork.

Two feet of 090 4130 costs about $10.00 and another $10 to ship it. Go figure.

If This rans nose fork thing works like I hope it will, the original RV style full castering spring, wheel and tire assembly will be availabe for anyone who is looking for one of those.

The ram-air tubes in the tank caps pressurize the system for better fuel flow, and also let pressure vent out of the tanks when the gas inside is heated by the sun or outside temperature.   They should be pointed forward, and don't need to stick down much into the tanks, as long as they go completely through the bottom of the cap.
The vent lines from the header tank to one wing tank are supposed to prevent an air-lock in the system.  Some want them - Others don't.

The vent tubes are a ram air pitot tube to pressurize the top of the fuel tank and help flow.

Therefore, they need to point forward into the relative wind.

Which way do you orient the vent tubes (tanks and collector)? I assume the 180 degree bend down but then what ? should it be pointed foreward, sideways or to the rear (the open end )  I have been told if not done correctly it could cause suction.

Have I created a  problem that does not exist?  How far into the wing tank does the vent need to go?  I would think just into the cap maybe an inch?

    Thanks again for the help,

Looks like good fun! The snow sucked this year for ski flying.. It's been more like ice racing than ski flying. Makes me wish my 180 was up n flying.

    Thanks for the vid!
