One thing I have always done as a practice but not with any knowledgeable intent is to open both tank valves when I start my walk around preflight.  I can usually see a couple of bubbles come up through one or the other lines to the tank.  Without thinking about it I have been venting myheader tank before I fly.  Once it is vented, you would have to run out of fuel and run the header tank down until the engine quit or close.  If you did that, better keep both tank valves open when you turn the other tank on to allow the header to vent.

Still not quite sure I understand if they are just tying the header vent into one of the tank fuel lines up closer to the tank; since there is only one port in our tanks?  Not sure that is much different than just opening both tank line valves.

Pretty sure its pushing it straight threw the air filter,I have a hose clamp holding it on to the  valve cover outlet, I think originally it was routed back into the engine to get rid of by pass oils but I could be wrong.

On the Pursang both valve covers have a hose that runs up and into the air filter tube. Evidently this works well since there isn't really anywhere for the oil to go but get burned up through the intake. I actually doubt that is the case because the engine runs so smooth and doesn't smoke at all, not to mention the uphill by probably 10" to where they breath. I did have the filters off the other day when I changed over to K&N filters too, and didn't see any oil in the intake tubes. You do have me thinking about it now though. I suppose that since this airplane has 690 hours now it's proven well enough so I won't go messing with that aspect.

I'm interested to see what you figure out.

I have to go get some stitches out tomorrow afternoon, but will go unwrap my Soob and take a good look - don't think any photos will help because it is painted all black - which I intend to change someday - try to give you a report by weekend or tomorrow night.  I have a spare stock Soob in my other shed, and will look at that too.

Got to go check my soob - I don't think there is any thing on the one cover - it is sealed - the other has an extended filler neck on it.

Is the grommet the type that is baffled or is it a straight shot to the filter,it may be just shooting oil on it as opposed to pressure build up pushing it out.Im not a Soob guy but Ive seen breather caps on our race car stuff that needed  to be baffled or you had a mess on your engine when you got back in the pits.Randy

    Soob air oil seperator
Ive  got  a few hours on my soob now but am having a problem with the oil blowing out of the small air filter I have on the valve cover. The other valve cover has the pvc valve in it. From researching it sounds like I need a air oil seperator ,just wondering what you other soob jockeys have for a breather set up, think were going to try and build a seperator but maybe there's another solution.

I just picked up a set of Avid amphibious floats with all the hardware, was wondering if anyone has any info on these so I can start some research- or point me in the right direction.
    Thanks-

    Ed,
sorry it took me so long to reply i must of missed this. anyways what I did was to just get two more of the transitional root ribs (they have the high arch of the HH wing on top and the flat bottom of the speed wing) I used these for the #1 AND #4 ribs the #2 & #3 ribs are omitted to make room for the tank then I just ran false rib cap strips along the bottom of the tank for #2& #3 to make it flat like the rest of the wing. this gave me the room to fit the HH tanks into my speed wing. it just tapers down to rib #5 into the speed wing profile. I used aluminum for the stinger to set the nose ribs on so it was bent up to make the transition smooth. it came out real nice hope to see how it actually flys in a couple months. I will look for some pics and put them up for you.

you know women lie.. LOL.. and for the record, it was not all me, it was the hired gun that cleaned up the malicious code when the service provider and the software company told me the best bet was to scrap the site and start all over.. I couldn't do that since the last back up of the site I had was on my laptop that died.. I now will keep the database updated every couple of days, and the service provider backs up the content every night so worst case, if it happens again, we would only loose one days postings if we can clean it up and have to rebuild the site from scratch.

Exactly how then to vent the header. A tee at one of the fuel tank inputs at the top of the header and a T at the outlet of on of fuel tanks?

Joey - Your 1st post wasn't clear to me. Are you operating with just a left tank valve or left and right?

I got mine w/o tank valves or header vent. The PO had operated it that way for 320 hrs. I will be installiing at least one tank valve.

On mine the only way to determine fuel qty/level is visually through the translucence of the visible side of the L/H fuel tank. Interestingly he painted the right tank completely so there's no way to tell what it has in it visually. unless both valves are left open I suppose and read from the R/tank.  Likely I'll strip some paint away from that right one so I can see it's level.

Welcome aboard here!  Looks like you have a great start on the project and should get it in the air pretty quick.  Post up a build thread if your so inclined when you get started on it.  We love airplane porn here so you can post enough pics to satisfy us

    New Avid builder in Oregon
Hi everone,   My name is Luke. I bought a partially completed MKIV kit in January, and I've been lurking on here to learn more about these planes. I got a private license in 92, but have been out of flying for the past 15 years. I just got back into it recently, and rent a local 172 when I can.   I hope to use the Avid for some cheap(er?) flying. I started a homebuilt back when I got my license, but ended up selling the project. I've been waiting to get back into homebuilding until I felt like I could commit the time and money to follow through to completion.   Thanks for the great forum. I've already picked up a lot using the search. I'll probably post a thread with more details about my project when I have time to take some more pictures and get them posted. For now, here are a few. Sorry about the quality, the place it's stored right now is kind of messy. I need to clean out my garage at home to get some room to work on it.   Luke D.   Fuselage complete with a layer of dust.   Wings
