Kenneth, if ya fly the back country its gonna happen.  It is normally performed when going into a tight strip and maximum braking is needed... then you hit a bump, one foot slips and holy shit, your putting on a good show for your other buddies who landed in front of you and are now videoing your arrival   Just ask Joey!

Looks like a nice day!  I hope to get in a bit more ski flying this weekend!

As far as the tail ski.. the adjustment mechanism he put on to set the stop angle sucks and Randy and I have both bent the ski right there.  Mine is cracked half way through the tube.  When I take it off soon I will redesign it so it will hold up a bit better.  I would guess it works fine for the guy that keep the plane in the hangar and only flys on nice days in good snow, but it does not hold up well to landing in the rough snow with hidden snogo tracks or hard wind blown surfaces.  It is however, must much better than not having one at all!  Just needs a little fine tuning and it will be a good unit I think.

Anyone know how to convert lumens into candlepower?  Doug, where are you?
    Lostman,
With your big alternator, you can run halogen or hid lights - the 55 watt driving lights wont do the job - I have a pair of 100 watt combo driving and fog lights that I am hoping will work - got to hook them up to a battery some night and test them.
I also have the LED wigwag lights from CrazedPilot - for recognition lights on wingtips - but not bright enough for landing lights.
    EDMO
One idea I had was to mount one of those million or 3 million candlepower portable spotlights in the cowl, and run the wires to a switch in the cockpit.

The vision X work good for us 2 strokers!  Since you have a real alternator you can probably get a better brighter light than I can run.  The vision X does all I need it to do, but I am not flying into completely blacked out strips in the middle of the night During the summer I am floats and it does not really get dark enough to need a landing light, only use it for recognition.  In the winter I am on skis and it works awesome as a landing light on the snow.  It greatly outperforms the head lights on my snowmachine when I use it as a helmet light.  I can light up trees 400' across the lake with it.

I will have to check out the new controller they are offering, that looks like the ticket!

  5. akflyer added a post in a topic Enclosed trailer for Mark IV Speedwing

It all depends.   I pulled a 28' chris craft from Wisconsin and was planning on permitting it the whole way back to AK.  Right behind the cabin the boat is 10.5' wide, but at the stern it pinches in to 8' 5"... guess where they measured it when I went to get a permit.  Right across the stern as it was easier for them to do that then climb up on the boat and measure it where it was obviously wider.  Long story short, they would not give me a wide load permit cause they said I didn't need one.  I got pulled over 3 times between Kenosha and AK because it "appeared" to the cop that I was over width... I would jump out of the truck with tape measure in hand and gladly hold the dumb end of the tape and have them measure across the stern   I told them its just an optical illusion... and every one of the goobers bought it.  Most of them were more interested in talking about the beautiful mahogany boat versus giving me a ticket.

I guess we are pretty sheltered up here.  If the bumper isn't dragging the ground then we "obviously" are not over loaded and have not exceeded the capacity of the tow rig

The only time I have ever been hassled was towing a 28' bayliner to whittier and you have to go through a train tunnel through the mountain.. of course, they have the one and only toll booth set up and the gestapo there wouldn't let me in without a wide load permit.  cost me 350 bucks just to get the boat to the launch for 4 days of shrimping out in the sound, but it was worth it!

Jim, its always nice to have a "wench" in the trailer to help you unwind after a nice flight!  It helps to relieve any residual stress that bad weather may have caused you

Just curious on a width, not weight, related scenario... if I have a open trailer width of 102" and haul a plane that is, say, a few inches wider overall but not so easy to see at a glance (since max width is not right at bed/fender height), what are the chances of catching a hard time (ie. fine) from the law cross country?

I have a Dodge 1 ton and was getting away with a 3 ton plate, non-commercial use only. The state of Iowa just made me go to a 5 ton registration the truck weighs 9500 lbs empty. I have never been pulled over to be checked for weight in it. I used to drive oversized loads for the Union Pacific Railroad and it was rare when I didn't have over width height and weight, permits were not expensive but they always checked those trucks. I would not worry about it too much the only tie I had a disagreement with an officer was in Illinois in a half ton with a 10,000 lbs trailer but he finally gave up when he saw my classA license. They almost never have scales with them anyhow.

    Ice Fishing
I like ice fishing but I like flying better.  But it is fun to watch others for a little while and then go out and explore a bit; see what others are doing, look for animals, etc.. Thats my favorite style of ice fishing.

I got out this weekend to play on another beautiful winter flying day.  Stopped by to see how my son-in-law was doing on Big Lake, some fresh snow there.  Then flew out to Figure 8 Lake to watch some guys fishing pike.  They were doing good and had about 15 or so.  Nothing but glare ice out there.  Decided to go look for wolves and flew out to the Theodore River, up it and then followed the Talachalitna River down to the Skwentna River, about a foot of new snow out there.  Good for airial tracking but other than tracks, only saw moose.  Always a blast though.

Coming back to the Matsu Valley, Pioneer Peak and the Knik glacier are always impressive.

I don't have a transponder in my Kitfox, been keeping one lazy eye out for something used on the cheaper side. New is good, what are you offering... include tray, harness, altitude encoder... price?

That company is now offering an updated controller that will handle 5W each channel.  This will allow the use of real LED lights that could act as a landing/taxi light.

Good laugh and oh so true! I hope to never be good at any of these low level aerobatic maneuvers.

  15. Felix added a post in a topic New Avid Magnum For Sale - N712GW

Hey Ron, Sorry for the delayed reply.  I have attached a pic.

I have her at my home and will be completing assembly in 2 weeks.

    I'm getting a Pito-static and transponder test on 4/4.

Then I can schedule the conditional inspection and prepare for the 25 hr fly-off.

I am currently looking for a soft copy POH (so I don't have to start from scratch) and assembly instructions as my Avid Magnum aircraft manual does not appear to be complete.

Any experience, advice, and/or assistance would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks Again, Mike

    Leni,

I realize it's an old thread but have you had a chance to use these lights in the dark yet? I'm searching for landing lights in the hope I can get things straightened out soon and be able to start the upgrade for night operations soon. Looks like the Vision X might be a good way to go.

    Thanks Doug,
I thought it would be more than Avid 43 1/2.  Got to get mine together some day and measure it.
Any front wheel weight yet on yours?

Just an update on this thread. I no longer need the transponder. I took it out of my KR2. It's basically just a parts plane now anyway. I bought it to part out even though with a little work it probably could be flown. I got a good enough deal on it that I felt it was worth the gamble. I have a good engine and redrive (Soob EA-81) matco wheels, brakes, tires, master cylinders, a full avionics and instrument panel, wing tip lights, and much more. The radio, transponder and brakes new (nothing has been used, it's all new stuff) were worth almost what I gave for the plane.

No prob Paul, hope it gave you some ideas. I think it's a pretty neat, well thought out FWF setup.

@Ed - I took some care but didn't square perfectly and come up with 60" axle to axle.

As an addition to the rad builders info I posted above:
The best article I have read on cooling is in "Alternative Engines" Vol. 2, by Mick Myal - It really goes into detail on trials of cooling an NSI EA-81 Soob in a Europa.    About 5 pages long, with lots of comparisons of different kinds of rads, Griffins, and Setrab exchangers, and has very detailed info on fins, matrix, thickness, and sizes, and results of his Shop Vac tests.
One bit of info he gave, "A thick radiator and dense fins will cool just fine at high speeds, but will not cool at idle or on the ground, because the air cannot be forced thru it." (paraphrased)  Another was: "If you use the wrong kind of antifreeze for aluminum engines and radiators, it can gel in the rad and not cool."
I could try to post it, but as enept as I am, I would rather copy it and mail it to someone who would post it, if it is wanted.
He gives sizes and cooling data, but does not include anything on cheek rads, but I guess you could divide a rad size in half and use that as cheek rad sizes.

Here is a page of radiator shop addresses, from the book "Converting auto engines for Experimentanl aircraft" by Richard Finch, 4 th edition.     I also read in here about using a Honda Civic rad for a 2.7 Soob and another using Motorcycle radiator.  I have other books on this too.

    Doug,
I believe summit racing and some other shop also do custom work - probably not cheap!   Maybe Harrison too?
Is that a nose wheel I see in the Aero photo?  Can you give me distance to mains?
    Thanks,
    EDMO
I read the page on triple-pass mods - Cant agree on leaving out the thermostat tho - You might get away with it on a Chevy V8, but most modern engines are made to run at a certain temperature, and they need it.
