    Only 7 degrees of flaps?
I noticed that the Avid Flyer Mark IV Speedwing I recently purchased only has 7 degrees of flap movement.

Everything I've read so far indicates that the plane should have 15 degrees of flap movement.

    Anyone know anything about this?

  2. akflyer added a post in a topic Kitfox wings for Avid MK IV

I am late to the party on this one.. but as I have said many times in the past.  Flying my HH and my buddies MK IV extended speed wing, I could get the speed wing in and out just as short as my HH and RPM for RPM his was about 5-7 MPH faster.  Additionally, his roll rate was better than mine.  I have thought many times about building new wings to kitfox length using the Avid speed wing rib and only 1/2" total washout.

I have not flown the KF IV airfoil yet but will someday so right now I can only compare the AVID extended speed wing to that of an Avid STOL profile.

I do NOT think it fair to have 3 different guys flying 3 different planes and call any type of contest STOL, spot landing etc a fair comparison to base any type of conclusion off of.  How many times has Paul Clause kicked the ever loving shit out of other cub drivers at valdez.  I know you can take the exact same cub and 10 different cub drivers and get 10 different take off distances and landing distances.  I am not saying that one pilot is inferior to the other, but to have a real comparison that you can hang your hat on, you need the same guy flying the same plane with enough time in each one to be comfortable with it.

I can get in Bobs kitfox and get it in and out considerably shorter than he does.  Bob is a good stick, I just fly a little closer to the edge than he does at times

There is NO WAY IN HELL I will take the 180 into the same lakes or strips that the previous owner would take it in his sleep.  Or that My buddy Mark would take it into.  I just cant or better yet wont compete with some guy that has 20,000 hrs in type and flew it for a living.  Give me a couple hundred more hours in it to learn just exactly how it wants to be flown in various weather conditions and weights and I will be singing a different tune, but today, I would not begin to think I could compete with them.

One thing that really stands out is just how fast the trees on the other end of the lake come at you when your looking for 90 MPH before you get out of ground effect and pull back on the yoke.  In my avid I will break water around 42 MPH and climb out at 50 all day long.  In the 180 the first float rolls out around 55-60 and both out around 65, hold in ground effect and dump a notch of flaps, look for 90 then pull back.. Two totally different worlds

Looks good - after it has cured for about a week, try scratching with thumbnail the paint that you put on a metal part - its tough!
should really stand out in the sunlight.

    Thanx Leni,
Well, Kenneth and I were both wrong - since the C meant "Standard" until 1948.   Well, anyway, we verified that there was an NC number long ago.   Maybe you will someday see a plane with this marking on it, and know what it means.    Very interesting reading.
BTW:   In case you didn't know - Radio call signs W and K are assigned to stations East and West of the Mississippi River - now you can tell which half of the U.S. the radio station is located in when you tune in with your antique ADF to listen to a ballgame - same goes now for TV stations, which were a spinoff from radio licenses.   Ham radio licenses are issued the same way.
I never even thought of this when in Alaska - would it be West of the Big Muddy?  Guess so - and a little bit North too!

well that will load it down for sure and explain the low EGTs!  I like gremlins that you can actually find and KNOW what it was that fixed the problem.

Don't forget to reinforce the seat truss, the thrusts between the forward landing gear legs

Glad to hear you got it tuned upand flying good now Willis.  Looks like your having a ball.  Great pictures and neat place to fly.

Your plane is just nice looking too.  You and Mike designed a couple great paint schemes!

Very creative and nice work!  As noted, be sure your gear leg tubes and bungees have clearance to move freely for the full length of travel to the safety cable limits.  Make sure it can't get knocked open in flight; especially on takeoff if you hit a bump.
If I was you I would also adopt Joeys BAG age and build the rear bagage area with door.  You need all that you can get in the Avid.

I know that with my 1.84:1 ratio I cant turn the engine rpms that some of the 2.2:1 Stratus Soobs turn without overspeeding the 70 or 72 inch Warp Drive prop - I will still turn more than the 2500 rpms that Whirlwind limits its blades to - so got to stay with WD or IVO.  Glad you found the problem and can fix it.

KRRL - Merrill Wisconsin.  I could put you together with my Kitfox IV, possibly another and maybe a Mk IV Avid, all in my neighborhood.

X = Experimental - But not the Amateur-built kind we have now - these were factory built prototypes, but guess some of them were sold with that marking?
And, I could be wrong on what the NC was for - that was what I was told - I was too young to fly then - Well, too young for a license!   But, why would a bunch of Cessnas, made in Kansas, have a North Carolina License number?

    Mike,
Please explain what this means - You were taking the engine rpms - not prop rpms - shouldn't you still turn 6500 or something like that, even if the prop had to have less pitch?   Did you have too much pitch to let the engine wind up?
Sounds like you could get a prop overspeed at the  2.0 ratio too if you come up to full engine rpms?

I was reading not too long ago about the old N numbers. It seems they all were NC to start with, it stood for North Carolina. It might have evolved into something else later but that's what article said.

Any idea what the NX and X stood for?

I didn't realize you were up in that area. Such a pretty place to fly. I ferried a plane into Kalispell a few years back. Always wanted to go when I had some time to kill up that way. Obviously doing some flying up there would be awesome as well. I might get out there this summer to go to Glacier National Park though. If I do I'll let you know.

I think this optional storage may be a good idea for some planes - but, IMO, it should be put in "Technical" or "Files and Forms" and not in the General Hanger with all the other chit-chat.
Just a quick look had me wondering if a strong vertical divider is needed on each side (front and back) of the bungee tubes?

Another option is a big canvas bag behind the seat. With my CG I can easily put 100lbs back there and stay well within the rear CG.

As they say, "History repeats itself"!
They had the non-commercial certification back in the 1940's, with the NC numbers.
This was under the CAA (Civil Aviation Administration), and maybe was phased out in the 1950's when CAA became the FAA.
The NX and X numbers were also phased out for general aviation.

    Maybe Tomorrow will be better.

Trying to find a flying Avid to fly, between Billings MT and Cincinnati
In my search to find another flying Avid or Kitfox and see how it compares to Pursang, I'm looking for anyone that lives on the route I'll be flying this week between Billings Montana, St. Louis, and Cincinnati.

I really want to be able to confirm how another flying bird performs and feels and have a baseline to compare the Mk V to.

I will be moving a 150/150 taildragger, starting Thursday morning in Billings, then making my way to St. Louis. I have no specific time I have to be anywhere other than the plane needs to be in Cincinnati this weekend. I'm more than willing to go slightly out of the way if anyone has a plane on this flight route that is able and willing to take me up with them.

The plan is Thursday morning to leave Montana, fly most if not all day to get as far as I can towards St. Louis. The winds look favorable and I might even make it that night. Then on Saturday I'll be leaving St. Louis heading to Batavia I69, where Sporty's is to deliver the plane for a new interior.

If anyone lives or knows of anyone that is somewhat close to this route, please message me or post up. The last chance I'll be able to check my message on here will be Wednesday night. If you read this after that point you can text me at six 2 three two 6 two 33 two eight (written for anti-spam).

    Thanks all!
