Requirements for plane in uncontrolled airspace
I am close to being done with my Plane, and was wondering what is required as far as lights on a daytime only VFR that will only fly in uncontrolled airspace. I don't plan on more than my handheld radio, and I would just as soon not spend the money on strobes and transponder, would it be legal for uncontrolled airspace or do I need to add the lights (already own a set) strobe don't have transponder expensive.  I am just trying to get this legal to fly while I finish building my Wittman Buttercup, so I want to use it to practice tailwheel landings and build more hours.

Waned Avid Mark IV or Kitfox Bump Cowl
I am rebuilding an Avid Model unknown I just know it is not an A, I have made enough changes to it already but I have an ugly hacked up cowl from a side mounted radiator and would like to replace it with either an Avid Mark IV Cowl or the Kitfox radial cowl, if anyone has one even in need of repair I would like to buy it.

C5 Engineer, I don't know if you are still here or not, but I remember you once posting a new set of rudder pedals for your avid, I am hoping You could send another picture of the way they are set up, I somehow have had my pedals disappear and need to make a new set, I can probably do this on my own, but I would like to have a shot to see how yours were done again. Hydraulic Brakes are going to have to wait, but I have 3 grass fields to land on so I don't need them for anything but taxiing. Hydraulics will come later. I almost sold my Avid, but am Happy I kept it, I just need to do the final 90% new firewall, Rudderpedals and check out the engine internals,
I just took a taildragger lesson in a Kitfox IV and flying from the right hand seat with no brakes I had no problems doing anything but taxiing and run up and taxiing wasn't that big a deal. These land so much easier than a cub even with the speedwing.

  4. Trackwelder added a post in a topic WING STRUTS

Old thread I know, but since I am looking for older information I will add my 2 cents. Look for Carlson Aircraft they sell streamlined aluminum extrusions for struts, I know one being put together with a set he is waiting for the DAR now, I Got side tracked building a Wittman Buttercup and now have hangar space so both airplanes are sitting side by side being bult. I am spending time on both aircraft at once, the Avid will be finished first, I need to make rudder pedals bend a new firewall and freshen up my motor, I took a taildragger lesson in a Kitfox and got bit by the bug again.
My problem is I need a second set of hands to build with, building alone is just a little difficult. I have a whole airport to myself most days and I need a hand once in a while.

If you want to try it yourself, use an 1157 base add solder between the tips and add leds until you get then epoxy the leds into the base you could pull power off either and solder to the copper base, if you put it in backwards it won't light.

Thanks for the offer but I already have an A or possibly B model supposedly serial number 202 that I was trying to strengthen and widen to a mark IV I got the strengthen part but It is still too narrow for two people my size, Picture small college Center and 20 years of swinging a hammer on the railroad still where a size 54 jacket with a 21 inch neck so unless I can find a mark IV or above I am afraid it would be a single seater. What I am hoping for is whatever information people might have on the Kitfox Biplane pictures if not numbers or an amphibian if I can find one.

    vid Biplane
I know that this has been done with a kitfox but am pretty sure that it has been returned to a single wing, What I am trying to figure out is how much work would it take to do the same to an Avid, Square foot of wing to Tail surface ratio and the like, I have come up with two sets of wings one fuselage and one set of flaps and am wondering if it would be worth it?Also angle of wing attack.

Not trying to disrespect your ingenious use of what was available. But look at the tanks that are here http://www.usplastic...d=searchresults . up to a 6 quart bottle at less than $22 oil line connector and mount built in. 2 quart is $16 cap is under $3. Sometimes I love the catalog junk mail that makes it to me.

I had contacted Just aircraft about the stiffeners that they use in their Highlander 2 1/2 inch 0.063 spar they would sell their extruded stiffener last year at $80.00 a set. This was about a year ago so prices may have changed.

When I was in college, my CJ5 ate its tranny so while I was waiting to get parts I bought a Suzuki Brut it didn't do to bad for 360cc but I don't think you would ever call it a race.

102 inch is legal in Missouri I have hauled plenty of semi-trailers throughout your state and never needed a permit until I was over that, and if it is only an occaissional deal the permits are cheap. 102 is legalin all states, I know california will only allow 40 foot trailers except on designated routes, but very rarely enforced.

The best thing about the new Rotax,is that there are enough people out there who can afford it so the price of used carburated 912s will go down, anymore you might as well figure the kit price is equal to the engine price.

I have seen pictues of this fuselage somewhere, it is similar to an A model with some extra gussets, unless you where building a single seater, I think you could find a fuselage that was either rebuildable or darn near design your own, those plans are so cheap they probably don't have much detail.

When I was in college , many years ago in Colorado, we had both black and brown bears in the area. They said the only way to tell the difference waas to climb atree, if it follwed you up it was a brown bear, if it knocked it down it was a Black.
The only time I had any trouble we had taken our jeeps up through the Devils Punchbowl on schoffield pass between Crested Butte and Marble Colorado( this is where they got the tomb of the unknown soldier beautiful white marble with veins of gold throughout), It was pretty normal to find vehicles that had gone over the side and their was really no way to recover them so they left them at the bottom of the cliff. Me and a friend decided that there were a couple that were worth salvaging some choice items from and let out our winch cables anchored our lines to our jeps and rapelled down. Got a real nice transmission and transfer case as well as a good Warn Bellview winch. As we climbed out the radio in my jeep quit working, I thought it had run the battery down and didn't think much of it until we reached the top, the bear had ignored the cooler and gone straight for eating my brand new all weather speakers. I guess he wasn't a fan of Hank jr.

I quit drinking so I have to find something else to keep me out of trouble. I have alot more time on my hands and you can only fly so much when it comes down to it, I had to give up motorcycles and I like building things. I hope 16k is right I will be getting a good sized check in but the railroad likes to hold onto cash as long as they can get away with it, If anyone hears a better price or talks to Brett pass the word please.

Are the Fat Bastards Still Built
I am almost finished with my Avid build, and was wondering if Brett is building the Fat Avid anymore, I tried emailing him but haven't received an answer yet, Since I don't have an exact date as to when I wwill have the money, I hate to bother him with a phone call. My options are either Luceairs Buttercup, a zenith 701 or 750, or the Fat Avid, there is something to be said for building from a kit versus plans. the zenith 750 is bigger than I need, the highlander is completely a dream and Kitfox quit building the Model IV Does anyone know what he charges for a complete kit wings and all?

  21. Trackwelder added a post in a topic Got the runs...

Adjusting the gun is another thing that new painters have problems with, reduce the amount of spray until a 2 count pull of the trigger doesn't run, just stand up some scrap cardboardboard and spray, between that and proper thining you should get it in no time. as long as you have the proper number of coats on I would wait until you have polyspray on before attempting to sand out the runs.

A 10 X20 mini storage will cost you $75 a month around here explains why hangars are so popular, the airports aren't advertising for junk storage, but I am real tempted to report them something I don't normally do. They are looking to get money from the faa for more hangars, and though theirs are old they would have plenty if they left it for just aircraft, I would be a little nervous storing my plane there, yesterday there was someone welding on a tractor right below the fuel tank within 10 feet of his painting supplies. Just what I want John Deere Green overspray on my new white and red paint job just as he lights the place on fire.

Try finding a battery acid tester, or if they don,t float a radiator tester should have the balls or at least some that will work.

If it wasn't for the low hangar prices there wouldn't be anyone flying around here, I sold my twinCam Fatboy to buy the plane and parts, but I am unfortunately waiting for Railroad Disability to give me a court date its only been 4 years, but I had enough to buy a house next door to where my wife works in a small town with a spare city block I don't have much left to sell, I am keeping my shovelhead chopper and my 1 ton truck, everything else is paid for except medications and doctors.

If the guy is paying him he has an address to contact him, if he isn't paying then the airport owns it and can have a yard sale. I don't mind if there is something resembling an airplane, but these hangars have just wire dividing them and I took a look less than 10 airplanes on the field, not counting privately built hangars of which at least half haven't had a plane in 10 years. They reported to the FAA last year that there were 22 aircraft on the field and were given about $500,000.00 for improvements, hangars were on the list. On a better hand its 9 miles farther to another field and they will give me a dirt floor sliding door hanger for $45 a month and when the sheriff moves his confiscated vehicles out I get the concrete floor bi-fold door hangar I can live with that.
