WD 40 used to work for that sort of thing, it was even a great starter fluid for diesels . But some years back they switched the propellant from propane to something inert. When trouble shooting anything I always start with the last thing changedbefore the problem started. I have yet to become familiar with the Bing carburetor but on the standard mikunisused on snowmobiles it is not unheard of to have a clip come off the needle makes short work of your cylinder. Good Luck

Check out this new Yamaha airplane conversion
    http://www.rotaryforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16100
I know that there is a better way to link sites but this will get you to a very interesting one using the yamaha genesis snowmobile engine converted to a rotax box good for 120 hp and up fairly light weight. Looks like he will build the adapter or sell the plans but the engine has seen some good flight testing

A 3.47 to 1 redrive at least on a vw is supposed to be good for 84 inches of propellor Your going to be turning a70 a little slow , but one take of and you will see.But if the deal is good ebay is getting $2500 or more for E boxes. you will only have about 75 percent of prop speed

Bandit, I see that we are almost neighbors as far as the internet goes, how far along are you on your plane or are you just making improvements?

I have emailed Rocky Mt.Wings about their tanks, at that price I am Interested. Are they fiberglass or plastic? Resistant to alcohol? What is the width? I have seen that Just Aircraft uses the same spar sizes that Avid used and that they use an extrusion to strengthen their spar a few more parts and I will be making my own Avid inspired plane. After I get my A model in the air.

Someone on here was doing the same to another snowmobile engine , they were going to use a rotax box I believe I don't know if it would hold the horsepower but with thoseponies you could almost play VTOL

    Rotax 1200 snowmobile motor
Any of you guys who deal with snowmobiles heard much about the gxs 1200, at 130 horsepower and an all up weight of sled under 600 lbs this might be an even better motor than the 912

The main parts I needed where wing ribs, I still have plenty of patterns I quess I could just break out the scroll saw and make duplicates. The F7A mod also doesn't look to hard to duplicate if I decide I need them. The one time I talked to him he said that there was someone who was teaching sport pilots in an Avid, now that is information I need.

I don't know how it would work on fiberglass, but on motorcycle tanks they have switched to POR 15 instead of kream

One more question, at what point would you consider it a "new" plane and redo the paperwork ? Around here I am looking at $400 plus dollars for an A&P to just look at the Avid and that is if nothing is wrong. Several have said that I know more about the plane than they ever will You would think that with out any hidden control systems an owner assist annual shouldn't take long at all but they all seem to hold to a minimum of 8 hours on a homebuilt and that is when they have time to look at it.

I had already decided to make a mount for four point harnesses But if this was a conversion from an A model It was done by an expert, I wonder if this may have been an A and a half. sounds like the stretch is going to be a go I don't know much about subarus but the Great Plains VW with redrive appears to be in the budget. My other choice would be a Jabiru but if the 582 is barely in the envelope they all need the stretch. I will look at the widening information after spending years swing a sledge hammer for a living I don't walk through too many doors with room to spare.

Brakes are manual, removeable motor mount looks factory.

Where would I find the information on the fuselage widening kit, the stretch is easy and I would eventually like to go with the VW with redrive and if I am front heavy with the 582 I guess its time to look at it to. Some time ago Steve Winder I believe said that they remove 60 feet of 4130 tubing and ad 80 feet to do the stretch. I would eventually like to widen the landing gear but other than one piece of tubing there are no other changes that need to be done with the material off.

No the spars are actually marked 2.50 T6 6061 .090 that really throws me but the doors are the A or B style. One of these days my wife says she will post picture for me I don't seem to figure it out and she is a Special Ed teacher and gave up teaching me.

According to the registration on my Avid it is supposed to be an A model but as I look at the fuselage the A model is out, removable engine mount. B model may be possible but I am not sure that the doors are the correct shape. I Believe that the C Model had a wider chassis so I am pretty sure that we stop there as far as thefuselage is concerned. The wings on the other hand are 6061 t6 0.090 on the spars so I don't think that they fit any of the information that I have been able to find. One other thing on the fuselage, there are three wooden stringers glued to the metal work. I guess the big question is should I continue to use the paperwork that I have or is it still possible to register under ELSA and fly off the hours again. I am pretty well tearing this plane down to nothing and rebuilding it from scratch with a few minor changes. Should I change the rudder to recenter it for a future engine replacement VW or Subaru redrive either way or what other changes would you make to your birds if you had them torn down and had the time to do what you wanted. I thought about widening the cockpit but am not having any luck finding out what size the spar carry throught tubes would have to be for the wider chassis. I realize that on the subaru the 16 inch stretch seems to be popular but is it necesary with the VW or just better handling. I love this plane I have dreamed about owning one since I first saw it in Kitplanes. My biggest necessity now is to keep the useable load weight as high as possible figuring the standard 3.8 G that cessenas sem to be rated at. Thanks in advance I am a certified welder so this is the time for me to make the changes that people think are worth while.

If you figure out how to make that arctic cat 800 work I want to know. finding wrecked low mileage snowmobiles is fairly easy. of course I was looking at the 1125 buell I wonder if its transmission would work for a PSRU. I haven't heard a whole lot of good about the twin cam that somebody was trying a while back too bad I have a couple of extra of those in the garage.

Justtalked to Brett on the phone. He is going to have to make the parts I need but he sounds like a person I can trust. He even has a line on someone that is using an AVID as an ELSA for flight training Sounds perfect for me I don't want a pilot license I want an airborn ATV

That could be my problem, I think I have been dialing 217-764-3775 it comes back with a messag that he is only open from 4 pm till 10 pm but I have not gotten a return call. The parts I need I could duplicate on my own but I figured I could send some of my business to those who have been supporting the plane rather than hunt down the mystery man in Iowa from what I have found out he has an ultralight field somewhere north of the Creston Iowa airport good hunting area.

    Whats up with Airdale ?
I have been trying to reach Airdale looking for parts for an Avid I am Rebuilding. No Email, No phone. How do you get them to return messages or have they just shut the doors for good.
