  1. NorthIdahoAvidflyer added a post in a topic Backing plate and prop spinner

You know that's a good question. I have had to remove and change them on other projects but this should not be an issue. It was just something I got stuck in my brain I guess.
With that said I pulled out the tools and installed the nutplates. Here are a couple of pictures.

    Backing plate and prop spinner
The spinner and backing plate is drilled for mounting holes and appears to have been mounted but I guess they must have installed them with nuts by reaching in from the back side of the backing plate. I have an idea to bad nut plates as shown in the photos. Maybe a dab of epoxy? Silicone? What do you guys think? I'd like to be able to change the nut plates out if needed and don't really want to rivet them in although that is still an option.

I had the same issue with my Dads last Avid. I used a Tiny Tach to discover the difference also.  Great little tach. Sure throw it in and I'll send it back or buy it from you.

    GSC 582 pitch setting
After setting my GSC three blade prop  to the recommended pitch it will still turn over 6800 static. Does anyone know how many RPM'S will change per blade angle change?

Thank you. I'll have to look around the airport and see who might have a little of this. It's pretty expensive to buy for one rib end. Seems there should be another option that I can pick up locally.

    Repaired rib end finishing
I got the rib end repaired. It will get painted white like the rest. Is there a recommended sealer to put on the wood before painting? Spar varnish?

    Standard door latches
My door latches where frozen so I had to cut them out. I built new ones using a small shaft collet with set screw I purchased at the local hardware store. I welded it to the back of the inner latch. Now the latch is adustable and removable for lube application. It works great.

Thank you. I'm going to pull them out this winter and rebuild them both. They seem to be holding pressure but one has noticeably less pressure than the other.

I bled the brakes last night and noticed one of the little Allen headed bleed screw on top of the master cylinders won't tighten up. It seems to be stripped but will back out and thread back in. I checked another pair I have and they are the same. One won't bottom out and the other will. I taxied the Avid around the yard and one brake worked better than the other. These sat for years without fluid. I assume they need new orings.

Yeah the silver one says that on the body. Guess it's time to order new ones.

I ttuned them around and they won't hold to door up. Seem to work better this way. They may need replaced.

I guess that kills my rant....lol. The written directions still do not explain the torquing procedure for these seal intigrated type bearings. They really cover the difference between standard Timken bearings and the seal type. If there another page of explanation?
Thank you for posting this. Much appreciated

    Brake bleeding
I saw this video on Homebuilt help. Jon Coke puts out a series of short help videos that I find super helpful. Here is one of them on bleeding brakes. I made the tool for about $6.

    Mark IV brakes
I'll post pictures tommorow but im not real impressed with how the spacer/hub/bearing/seal set up is on these planes. The hub seals are attached to the bearings and a large washer rides on the inner seal all the time. With no stepped axel there is no way to properly load the bearings without putting excess pressure on the inner seal / spacer. It would have been easy to make the inner spacer large enough to be used as a sealing area for a standard seal. Things that make you go hmmmm. A fix may be in order if I can find seal that will fit inside the hub and still give me room. I would have never designed anything this way....or maybe mine is just installed wrong. Pictures to follow.

As you can see I have two different door gas struts on my plane. Both work well. Someone botched the lower mounts on these by trying to weld a bolt to the car style ball. I bought a new set of mounting balls at Autozone for $4.00. I plan to weld up a new set as a winter project.

Thank you for all the great input. I have never ran a static port but have seen them on several Kitfoxes. They all ran Dynons come to think of it.

    Cowling Camlocks and Static Ports
My plane came with a few missing camlocks for the cowling. They look to be stainless and have a very small number 3 on the head. They are Phillips head. I looked at Aircraft Spruce but cant find exactly what a think I need. The 2600 and 2700 series look close but are not offered in Phillips head and stainless in number 3's.
Also, I would like to add a static port. I've seen them added through the side of the cowling (pilots side through the side the fuse near your feet) or fuselage. Aircraft Spruce has one that looks like it would work and has a backing nut. Can someone give me a suggestion on the what, when and where's of installing a static port in an Avid Mark IV?
As always I appreciate your input.

  22. NorthIdahoAvidflyer added a post in a topic Break in high temps

Update: I clearned the sender and ran it again once the OAT cooled off. Much better results. I will still be checking the gauge to sender. The engine ran good and I was able to maintain temps with rpm changes. It's still running near 180. I'd like to see it a little lower. Who is running a thermostat in the GH? Who is not? What temps are you seeing? This thermostat could be a winter options for me.  Now to check gauge, cowl it, and see how it operate. I will run it one more time in the morning while it's cool outside just to see the difference between the there OAT's. More to report

I'm running a GSC three blade. I ran it again with the same results. I kept a closer eye on the temps. When I shut it down it was pushing water slowly into the reservoir. The gauge is a VDO gauge with markings at 120, 180, 210, 280, 300. The engine was warm.  Im waiting for cooler evening temps to run again.
