Here is what I found. The down throw was over 20 degrees. I reset the ends and added a stop. Now I have 17 down and 30 up. The problem with the bolt nut hitting the structure is still an issue. I called a local builder I trust and he said to use a pin with washer under the head and pin and make sure no side to side slop was present. I found a new pin in my hardware and added a thin washer inside the end to take out the slack. A thin washer under the head and pin made a good fit. Here is a picture.
I'd like to hear what you guys think. I'm kinda out of my realm on the pin verses bolt thing.

I would agree. Something has been modified by the looks of it. I was hoping someone might have a picture of what this should look like. It seem stout enough but it looks like hell. Do these planes utilize stops on either end of the throw?

I am looking through the manual to see what is recommended. Haven't found an exploded view yet.

I'll start by saying that this bolt and nut are hitting the front tubes and have actually worn a groove in the nut. Yes they used a nyloc nut here.  More pictures....

So I spoke with Joey and he said to put a low profile head bolt and castle nut on. I did and as you can see its still hitting on both sides on both tubes. If I used a Phillips head bolt it would fix one side but the side with the nut would still hit the tube. Last pictures.

    Huston! We have a problem!
I was mounting the data plate and decided to pull the trim panels off underneath the horizontal stab since I had not looked at the elevator rear connection yet. Here is a series of pictures of what I found. Something does not look right and since I have no reference or built the plane I would like your input.

  9. NorthIdahoAvidflyer added a post in a topic Tach issues

The engine is a GH 582. I have used and love the Tiny Tach. I wanted to replace the defunct gauge with another gauge to keep the panel clean. Chop sent me his Tiny tach knock off and I used it to set the prop. Joey indicated that these engines have a history of inconsistent reading from the tach lead. Guess I'll end up installing a Tiny Tach anyways. I like that they have a timer function on them now.

    Mountain Avid
My plane was a bit of a blank canvas so I started looking around. I ran onto a company that makes vinyl for jeeps. I saw this vinyl and knew it was what had to go on my plane. They made them in different sizes and made them in right and left patterns. Here is your first look at the Mountain Avid. Hope you like it.

    Tach issues
I found that my Westach Tach was 800 rpm off. This is the second Westach tachometer that I have had that was very inaccurate. I ordered and received a new UMA Tach. My plane has the Hot Box system in it. the old Westach was connected to two polls on the hot box that were marked Tach. The new gauge has three wires. Red, Black and Yellow. The red and black are power and ground. The yellow wire is the source feed wire which is to be connected the brown wire from the engine. I have no paperwork on the hot box but I'm guessing that I would just connect the yellow wire from the gauge to one of the polls on the hot box???
I'd like to hear from anyone who has ran into this issue.

    Thanks
    Vance

    High EGT's
I was having high EGT issues on my initial run from 5000 rpm to 6800 rpm. It was not critical temps (1150) but higher than I wanted to make the initial flight test with. I decided to recheck the jets and order the next size. When I checked the correction chart it said I should have 160 jets for my altitude. I did not remember ordering that size originally so I check my receipt and sure enough I had ordered and installed 155's. It took me awhile to figure out that I had calculated the altitude in meters instead of feet. This is the 4th set of main jets I have bought for a Rotax and have never done that before. Needless to say a new set is on the was from Aircraft Spruce.  Flight test soon.

Thank you for clarification. I will take two XL in white. If in the future you would consider changing the logo color to white I would buy another set of shirts in Blue and Black.
    Thank you

Will the lettering and airplane be white or show the color of the shirt? Thanks for putting this together.

  20. NorthIdahoAvidflyer added a post in a topic Break in high temps

Update: I tested the sensor and gauge and found it to be very inconsistent. I set up a camping stove and grounded the sensor with a double ended alligator clipped jumper wire to the engine. Its sweet spot was 175 to 185 but in three tests could not get solid readings compared to candy thermometer. I referenced the builders manual and actually found where they said these gauges could be up to 30 degrees off. Off with the VDO and ordered a new Westach.

LOL!  I'm referring to recouping some of the invested cost at resale. We made $2500 on my last Avid and got to fly it for a year. Lifes hard...harder if you are stupid

I just went through this. The guy was asking far more than I've as willing to pay. Now that I've been through it I would have offered him less. It all depends on a lot of different things. One thing can make or break the project and go from an investment to a money pit. Pays to have someone else who knows more go over it before laying down the money. Personal building skill plays alot into it too.

This is great news. I have visited with Deal Wilson on a few occasions and even had him do work on our last Avid. I'm sure he would be pleased to know his design is still (finally) being supported in a positive way again. Thanks Mark and good luck on your new adventure.

I wanted to post a picture of the gas shocks I recieved. Thanks Chop for the suggestion. These were $12.00 a peice and shipped locally for me. Had them in two days. They have a variety of different strengths. These are 50 pounders. They work very well.
