I like it alot!!! Maybe someday I will make a mod like this but for right now I'll stick with something a little less extreme until I get some time in this bird. Man you should really jig those parts up for people to make their own.

I have a set of Stolspeed VG's and was wondering if you could share your placement information with me?

Was there a big difference between the two? I'm taking the wide gear I got from Joey to the powder coater and I have a set of bigger rims and brakes (the same as yours) on my spare plane. I was going to cover them with fabric but after seeing your gear I kinda like that look. It will also match the doors after I take the fabric off of them too.

Well you will be happy to know that your plane is on my desktop on my work computer. It's one of my favorite Avid pictures.
I believe my Avid was a transition between the C and IV.  Have you guys flown both sets and is there a noticeable difference between the two? You are correct on the height difference. I measured it for Joey and it was 2".

I believe this plane has the exact same gear as the earlier model A that I flew. It is no taller and does not have a step welded on it. I do have a set of the taller gear I got from Joey that could go on this IV easy enough. As far as alignment what are you looking for? Both straight ahead? toed in?
I have attached two pictures. I'm assuming the white and red Avid is on the standard taller gear?
    Thank you

Wider gear options for the IV
I am already looking for other gear options for my Mark IV after the first test run. I'm pretty handy with metal and would not mind at all building a set. I even have a spare Mark IV airframe to jig it off of. I'm going to search through the threads and see what you all have been doing and if anyone has documented their gear builds.

  9. NorthIdahoAvidflyer added a post in a topic High EGT's

Update: I took the Avid out for some testing this weekend. Initiate flight showed high EGT's again. Jet change didn't help. Plugs and EGT's show good colors. Ran it by Joey and he mentioned the possibility of improper sender placement. He sent me an article on the subject and a check showed that my EGT senders were just under two inches off from there intended location. The book calls for the probe to be 1 5/8 inches out from the face of the exhaust flange. My probes are currently placed 3.5 inches from the face of the exhaust flange.
I also found a leak in one of my radiators. Looks like I will have to pull them off and have them fixed and tested. Something was buzzing/vibration really loud. I need a seat cushion.
All in all the plane felt good in flight. Climbs like a home sick angel.  I still have a few things to check and adjust but all in all it was a good test flight.
    Pictures to be posted soon.

I tried that but there is not enough room on my Avid between the bar and the skylight. The back of the seat seems to be a better place for me.

    Headset hanger
I was wondering what you guys use for a hanger to hang your headsets up inside the plane. I have an idea to make one that goes over the triangle frame section in the cabin top. Would like to see what other use.
    Thank you

Nice looking plane Jared. Nice clean install on the engine. I like the looks of the radiator plentom mounted on the back of the one radiator. Alot of guys claim higher under cowl temps with the cheek radiators. With a couple of plentoms like these and by sealing around the radiators/cowl that should help keep the temps down under the cowl.
    Where are you located Jared?

You bring up some good points Chris. After resetting my needle position my engine temps are way down. I'm starting to think my biggest problem was in the mid range circuit. Now that it looks good I should be able to reinstall the 160's. I will run it again with the 160's and add a bit more pitch. I hope to fly this next weekend.

LSaupe, I have two brand new rpm gauges. One is a UMA and the other is a Tiny Tach. They are reading the same rpm. The Westach EGT could be an issue beings that both of the other Westach products I had were replaced for not being accurate. I've re-jetted four Rotax engines and never had this issue. The conversion charts normally put you right were you need to be. I'm running 165 jets in this engine to get the temperatures were they need to be. 165 are the jets they call for at sea level and I'm at 2200 feet. THe chart calls for 160's. I also wonder if this could be a plugged up exhaust. Between the mud dobbers and the 2 stroke oil that was caked to the bottom of the plane this could be a possibility. I'll try another EGT, see what it says and go from there.
    Thank you

I got new jets in and was still running 1200 degrees at WOT. I ended up changing back to the 165 jets to get the temperatures in the 1100 range. Why I’m running sea level jets at 2200 feet above sea level I’ll never know. My mid range was also running a bit high  so I lowered the e clip a notch and now everything looks good. It’s running about 1050 degrees in the mid range.  A few more things to take care of and I’ll be ready for a test flight. :)

  19. NorthIdahoAvidflyer added a post in a topic Storage area

My friend built a cub with a storage compartment a lot like the Avid but he modified it for long items. Mine has the standard side door with the standard compartment. I have a extended bottom I plan to install this winter. What my friend did was he came out off the back of the box with a tube fashioned out of thin aluminum. He made it big enough and long enough for a shotgun and his fishing poles. The problem I see with building this off of the standard Mark IV cargo box is accessibility to get long items in. One could remedy this by making an accessable opening in the turtle deck just above the storage compartment. There is a guy on the web named George Race. This guy has a lot of cool access panels and will make you anything you want. All CNC and beautiful workmanship. I used three of his products on my Zenith 701. They get a lot of attention from other builders. If you look through George’s web site you will see one I designed for accessing the rear spar area on the Zenith for fuel connections on dual tank setups.

The new UMA tach and Tiny Tach were ran today and I'm happy to report they are accurate with each other. I got the Tiny Tach with the additional resettable timer. It will be nice to have another timer on board along with a back up tach.

I will remove the washer and come up with a different way of adding a stop. I appreciate the feedback on this.

No need to be sorry Ron I had two other people think that it was acceptable including myself. The nice thing about Aviation Hardware as you can look up its specifications somewhere. Aircraft Spruce normally has a decent description of the item on their website.
Im not sure what the original builders was trying to accomplish. The tab is sturdy for sure but does not look pretty. I have a couple of other small projects over the Idaho winter planned and this will be another one. I will take this all apart and refab the end back to the original configuration.

  23. NorthIdahoAvidflyer added a post in a topic Huston! We have a problem!

Thanks Jim. So I did a little research during dinner (wife loves it when I do this) and it says that clevis pins are not to be used for this. It said " Used with clevis forks and in secondary controls which are not subjected to continuous operation." Well I would say the elevator is continously operated. I went back out and searched my hardware again and found a low profile head sheer bolt and a low profile castle nut. I put them in and they are as close as I'm going to get. The clearance is still minimal but at least I have some. I guess I will have to live with that. I feel a little better about the castle nut and pin arrangement in a major control like the elevator. I lost my best friend and building mentor over a failed elevator control. It makes me a little nervous. The bottom picture is some hardware I found on the Aircraft Spruce website.

I went to an estate auction of a local plane builder and bought a ton of AN hardware. It comes in real handy.

Here is how I added a stop. I took an AN 3 large washer and drilled the hole to 1/4". I added another stop nut and added the washer between the stop nuts. The washer now acts as a stop when you let the stick all the way forward.
