NorthIdahoAvidflyer added a post in a topic What pitch to use on a 582 3 blade 68" Kiev 2.58 gearbox
I would like to move to a 70 inch prop. I flew a Powefin on a similar set up and it was really smooth and made good thrust.
The Hacman system is a must from talking to people who run them and fly various altitudes. I probably won’t go with a IFA.

What hot water heater unit are you using? Homemade?, Neat Heater? I want to install one but will probably wait until next winter.
The neat heater on Aircraft Spruce is $434.00. Nice clean looking unit. The accessory kit is another $243 which seems a bit expensive for what comes in the kit.

NorthIdahoAvidflyer added a post in a topic What pitch to use on a 582 3 blade 68" Kiev 2.58 gearbox
TSoftware, I was cruising through old posts and found this thread. Back two months ago I went through exactly what you went through with the prop pitch / rpm / EGT. First I found that my water temp and EGT gauges were off. Both were older Westach gauges. I then found out my RPM gauge was not reading right. I replaced it with a new tach and added a Tiny Tach also. The newer Tiny Tach has a timer on it so it came in useful as an extra timer in the cockpit. After all the gauges were working I was still getting high EGT’s. To makes life harder someone had placed the EGT probes in the wrong location on the Exhaust Manifold. They are suppose to be 1 1/2 and 1 5/8 inches away from the manifold flange. (depending on what side of the Exhaust the probes were mounted to). My probes were placed at 3 1/2 inches out. After I got all this figured out then came the pitch setting. The factory said I should be at 14 degrees. Everything I read said to set it at 6200 to 6300 static. This would not work for my set up. After four prop adjustments I finally got it to cool to the 1150 range in cruise. I’m running a 64 inch three blade GSC. I’m set at 16 degrees of pitch. 2.58 to 1. My static ended up at 5850 and my WOT straight and level rpm at 6700.
Seems from reading through this site that there are many variables. Just figured I would share mine too.

Recoating the 582 ExhaustIts time to repaint/ recoat the exhaust. My exhaust has less than 60 hrs on it but it sat for years in the California coastal air. It looks to be ceramic coated. Rust is bleeding through the coating. It looks like hell. I took it all apart today. I’m looking for opinions on best practices for recoating. The auto parts stores sell a VHT (Very High Temp) ceramic coating in a spray can. Watched an online video where a guy put it on his Harley. It looks good.
Thought or suggestions?
Thanks

The first door is assembled. So far so good. One of the panels bled something through the paint. I cleaned the painted area but I think it was permanent marker. Not enough to worry about just a bummer.

Worked all weekend on the doors. Welded the lift cylinder tabs on permanently because the rivets let the tab move on the door. Cleaned and painted the door frames. Applied the two sided tape. Masked of all the lexan panels and painted one. I painted a test piece with the white fusion paint for plastics and it seems pretty durable. I will finish painting the panels and hopefully have these all back together this week.

I love the Mini Max. I plan to build one more plane for a cruiser and want a little low wing. I build part of the original Hummel Bird and really like the looks of the new H5. I’ve seen a few Mini Max airplanes that caught my eye.

I have to agree 100%. I tell my wife all the time that I’d rather screw an airplane into the ground than be stuck in a retirement home. My Grandfather got ran over by a car and my Father-in-Law died in a nursing home. I’ll like mine quick a hopefully painless.

Damn it! Thank you. I assumed it was based off of total weight not gross. I guess that makes perfect sense

NorthIdahoAvidflyer added a topic in Avid Model IV
BRS on an AvidI have a chance to buy a Soft Pack BRS 750. The rocket is good until 4/25. Does any of you have a BRS mounted in your Mark IV and if so where do you have the parachute mounted, where do the straps run and where do you have the ends of the straps anchored?

TJay that looks real good and sounds very time consuming.
I worked on my door some tonight. I got the lift cylinder brackets welded to the door frames. They where riveted to my frames and very sloppy. Both doors are marks and I have one left to drill the new rivet holes into. Getting closer to being done.

wypaul, Are you happy with the bubble doors? For what its going to cost to tool this up it may be more cost effective to just buy a set. I'm still going to talk to my guy about making a set just for the learning aspect.
Jared, Try taking a regular hair dryer and applying a little heat to one corner and see if that softens the film. If you can get it to lift keep applying heat to the area where it is lifting and work it off the surface. I've done this before and it works good.

I got the last two Poly door panels cut out and cleaned up last night. I've learned a few things about cutting and cleaning these panels. I will for sure do the next set much faster.
I will talk to my EAA guy and see when we can start making the molds for the bubble doors. Joey said the LP bubble doors are petty thick and heavy. My current doors are 1/16. I'm thinking that 3/32 or 1/8 my be needed for the bubble doors to give them rigidity after forming.

I have an EAA memeber who formed a full bubble canopy by himself. He said he would help me make the mold needed to form a bubble door or my plane. I’d be willing to make a few more.

I’ve heard you guys mention his before. I suppose a good quality plywood like the rib material would work good for something like this. What kind of epoxy is used for this upgrade?
Glad you like the lights. I have been looking at more light options and came upon these. They are a Flood and Spot combo light. They may be perfect for this application.
