  1. NorthIdahoAvidflyer added a post in a topic Thermostat for Rotax 582

My 582 did not have a thermostat. I purchased a housing off of Ebay because mine did not have provisions for a thermostat. I bought one (housing) off of a 583 snowmobile engine. it came with a thermostat but it was to long in the body and hit an inner casting inside the head. I found one aftermarket but cant remember for the life of me where i ended up getting it from. I think I posted about it on here somewhere. Anyways....it was worth it. I have a small water pressure gauge and you can tell when it opens. Temps come up better also.

I worked it over and cleaned it up a little. I didn't need the dimensions and you could not read them once you printed it out anyways.

The inspection that requires a new registration, builders log, W&B, three views of the airplane, and application for airworthiness and a program letter.
I may have to do what you suggested EDMO and write in the measurements. Attached is a photo of what I have.

    Avid Drawing for Inspection??
I’ve been looking all over and can’t find a good clear drawing of the Avid Mark IV in the TD configuration. I found one but the measurements are blury. Can anyone hook a Brother up?
    Thanks

I’m sorry it took so long to get back to you. Winter in Idaho. I just don’t get out to the storage often.
So I do have a set but it appears someone cut them down. I took a picture. You might be able to extend them somehow and cover it with the pad. I threw one in my plane and I don’t like the shorter length. Looks to be a couple inches shorter compared to the other photos.
    Let me know.

Check jetting per the chart and use the jetting correction chart for your local temps. Also check your EGT probe placement on the exhaust manifold. If you don’t want to add another degree of pitch then its a main jet change. The jet change will add more fuel.  The needle meters the midrange.
Your story is exactly what I went through with mine. With the jetting set per the charts it was the prop I found to make the biggest difference and it didn’t involve using more fuel.
What Propeller are you running? What is the length of the prop? Two or three blade? I found that my prop blades need to be longer. I’m running a thee blade GSC, 64”.
I found my problem in the midrange. When I was climbing (running on the main jet, engine loaded, WOT)  the temps were good. This told me my main jetting was right. As soon as I leveled out and pulled the throttle back to 6500 the egts would start to climb. If I pulled back on the stick and started to climb a bit the temps came back down. As soon as I unloaded the engine the temps start to climb again. That’s when I learned how much these engines like to be loaded. I’m nowhere near the 6250-6350 optimal static rpm listed in the books. I ended up at 5650 static. Life is good, temps are under control and I still get 6700 Max rpm in flight.
I know you don’t want to add more pitch but I feel with another pitch change you will be where you need to be. One thing about pitch...it’s free and can be moved back.
Good luck and please share your findings.

Hirth EFI unit on a Rotax 582?
Man I would love to try one of these on my Rotax 582. Has anyone ever played with EFI on the 582?

I will say that it’s already hard. It might be harder to tell when it’s going to crack.

It was recommended my another Avid flyer. He has been using it on his plane for awhile.

No I didn’t open the bleed screw because I didn’t know there was one...lol. The thread I read didn’t mention one.
I didn’t fill through the bottom fitting hose either. Guess I should have don’t more homework. Ok so I guess this thread should be titled “ How to bleed air from your Rotory Valve when you don’t follow directions”.

Rotory Valve Bleeding on Inverted engines
Just a heads up for you guys. I changed my Rotory Valve hoses out last week. I used the reinforced kitcken sink water sprayer hose from the hardware store. This hose is stout and very hard to install on an engine that is already installed on the plane. It’s heavy walled and very hard to push on all the ends. If you do use this hose you will want to soften it with a hair dryer. I would probably use a thinner walled hose next time as there is not a lot of clearance between the top (inverted engine) connection and the engine mount with the heavier hose.
I did my best to change out the hoses with as little oil lose as possible. I figured I would eliminate the need to bleed the system...WRONG! At the advice of Joey I tipped the plane up on its nose and let it set for 30 minuets. A check at 5 and 10 min showed no oil loss in the reservoir. I decided to leave it longer while I did some other maintenance. 20 mins later I checked again and the reservoir was completely empty. I was shocked. Apparently there was a huge air bubble in the system. I filled it slowly and let it set another 20 min. The level of oil stayed the same after the second filling.
This would have cause major issue had I not took Joeys advice. It’s a simple task and one well worth the effort. Picture attached.

Forget the optimum static rpm range based on prop setting. I got hung up on this and it made me pull my hair out for a week. If you are out of needle adjustment positions add more pitch and cure your problem. Each propeller profile produces different results. I was shooting for the magic 6250-6350 static. At that static setting I was running over 6800 rpm in level flight and was running hot EGT temps. After getting good advise on here I added pitch and the problem was fixed. I ended up running 5650 static and my WOT level flight rpm is around 6700. Temp are good now. These engines like to be loaded. If your WOT climb temps are good but they get warm when you level out it’s because you are unloading the engine. Adding pitch will fix this. My propeller manufacturer said to set my prop at 14 degrees. I’m at 16. Each set up it different.
    Good luck

Those are good looking caps. I wonder how much it would be to ship a couple of those to the US? I'll shoot them an email this weekend and see  if it is cost effective or if they know of a US distributor.  Thanks for posting.

Thanks EDMO. I did look at eBay. A new one is $40.  The one used one they have is $30 plus shipping and it looks beat up. The others are new and no savings over Aircraft Spruce. Plus, I always need more stuff from Aircraft Spruce so I can combine the order.  I figured I would ask here just in case someone had one I hate buying stuff then seeing someone on here selling the same item for a good deal.

What to buy: I got my ELT back from the shop and need a remote. The part number is  E-01-05. Figured I see if anyone had an extra one laying around before Aircraft Spruce gets some more of my $$$.
    Thanks

    Mark IV extended baggage compartment
When you plan to fly into back country strips you can’t have enough storage areas. I got my hands on this extended bottom for an Avid. My Avid had a standard storage compartment. I Omade a template out of paper around the new bottom tray and used it to mark were to cut the bottom out of my compartment. Once the new tray fit I covered it with felt used in vehicle trunks and to cover speaker boxes. I have to say that I’m super happy with how it turned out. I have not carpeted anything but my instrument top and the was pretty easy. You definitely have to take your time and measure everything three times.

Av8r_Sed is correct. My plane was having high EGT issues. One thing I found was the probes had been installed on the manifold in the wrong location. There are other articles and explanations. Basically it’s 1 1/2 inches out and center on the short side and 1 5/8 inches out and center on the long side. The measurement was taken from the manifold face without the gaskets.
