I will. I don’t understand why they didn’t build the tail stronger. It’s a taildragger for shit sakes.

I would love to get my hands on a set of plans to make skis. I think wheel skis would work better for my plane and location as we can have little snow at my place and have over a foot jut 10 miles North of us. Our winter weather seem to always slide to the North. There are a lot of very nice airfields in Northern Idaho that I could access during the winter if I had skis.

it would be super cool if you could make it Chris. I booked my flight this morning.
Flying there in my own plane is on the bucket list too.

Do you guys prefer the shaved tires over the regular treaded tires? I see they add about $20 dollars to the price to cut the tread down. Seems kinda silly to pay more for less tread.

Saskavid, Thank you for the link. For some reason the pictures will not load. I will try them again on my home computer. My work computer sometimes block certain video and photos.

I happen to have two sets of the calipers also. Is it possible to add the second set on too? I know I have seen double set ups before?

Thank you dholly, I appreciate you taking the Newbie in. So, will I need to purchase a camping pass? When you say bat barn loft does that mean you will have a place for me to sleep or will I need to bring my tent? Sorry, I might ask a lot of question until I figure out the group terminology.
I have absolutely no problem helping and keeping up in camp. We are a camping family and I have to have a clean organized camp. A lot of it has to do with me not being at home and needing to stay busy and the fact that I'm anal about everything......it drives my wife nuts!!!
Sounds like you guys are set up. I will download the app and get my AN list ready!
    Thanks

Please do. I’m bringing my Ultralight tent and sleeping bag / pillow. These bones don’t like sleeping ground anymore but for Oshkosh I’ll make an exception.
If there is anything else you can think I need to bring shoot me a message. I’ll message you and Larry my cell number so we can keep in contact.
How about places to charge a cell phone?
    Thanks Bandit. Much appreciated.

I want to thank all who spoke up and gave me advice on this. The results are amazing.
The wife’s heat gun was a small pencil type. I took a candy thermometer and held it at different distances to see what kind of heat it would put out. Four inches gave me 150. Three inches gave me 250. Two inches gave me 350. One inch gave me 450. I figure this was a great progression. I decided to do four passes at each inch distance working perpendicular to the ripple in the skin. I ended up making more passes the closer I got as I had a good light and I figured I would be able to see the skin start to tighten. Sure enough it worked out just like that. I could see when the skin started to move. It was amazing. Once I saw the wrinkle start to leave I worked it side to side and down. It was gone literally in  seconds once it started.  Here is a before and after.
    Thanks again guys. You Rock!

Alright guys....!ive never been so I’m kinda behind the curve here. Joey asked me to go and I’m going whether he can make it or not.  I plan on tenting it. What do I need to do? Can I camp with you guys? Do I need to reserve a spot?

I had the tail up on a stand trying the level the prop blade for setting the pitch. It slipped off the blocks, the stand hit the lower longeron between the back and the first bend. (Picture). It was already a little loose but this made it looser. I checked all the inner tubes with a light and mirror. No damage.

    Which wheels/brakes to use?
I have a set of Mark IV gear that I want to put on my plane. My plane has the older C gear. I have a set of 6 and 8 inch wheels and tires. I do want to add bigger tires after I get some time on a regular set up. What would you guys recommend? Pictures attached.

    Tightening fabric
There is some slack in the fabric back by the Main Fuselage Rudder upright. I’d like to tighten it up. Has anyone done this after the plane is flying? If so what process did you use?

    Powder coating
The paint on my used control sticks was chipped and ugly. The Local EAA chapter has a powder coating set up (harbor freight) and a big homemade oven. I saw some parts the President did on his plane and decided to do my sticks with it instead of painting.  I cleaned them off with a wire brush and cleaned them with a non-lint rag and acetone.
I watched a few videos on YouTube just to get an idea on how the process went. The President ended up being at the hangar and gave me some good tips.
The gun was dirty and kept spitting big plums of powder out. I managed to get a pretty even coat on both parts. I baked then at 400 for 20 min. They turned out great. I like the finish and it is durable as hell. I had to remove a little of the coating where the sticks go into the aileron/rudder control and it was hard to get off with a wire wheel.
    Next...Landing gear.

Bandit, Kalhe76, let’s plan a meet up. I’ve never been so I’m not sure I’d there is a good place to meet up for a visit ,dinner, beer?
Yamma-fox,  flying that trip is on the bucket list and it would be cool to stop by your place on the way. If you can try and make it out this year.

    Oshkosh 2018...Who’s going!
Well after all the years I’ve dreamed of going to Oshkosh it’s finally happening. I’m stoked.
I hear there are a few people going. I can’t give details yet because I’m waiting to hear back from a friend and make some solid flight plans.
Looks like I will be flying Commercial into Green Bay on the 24th.
Whos going? It would be neat to meet some of you there.

The  philosophy you speak of has already been applied to these engine/ gearbox / propeller set ups but over a much longer time frame. It goes even farther than this but to produce the needed rpm at a given usable propeller length while still keeping the engine properly governed and temps in check does give you some room for experimentation but not a bunch. Also, the price tag associated with this kind of experimentation is more than most people can afford and a lot of this stuff is not returnable.  So we basically have learned from industry standards and each other. The problem a lot of times comes from having to get that magic number in the book. I’m guilty. There are so many variables. Someone else could probably do a better job explaining gear box ratios to propeller effectiveness on these airplanes.
There is no dumb newbie questions here.  It’s worth asking anything to gain some insight or share some knowledge.
