    Trimming out the plane?
The last two flights as I'm staring to relax a little and starting to play with the trim. I have noticed that I'm constantly correcting for a left wing low tendency by pushing the stick to the right. Sometimes when I slow the plane down is much more noticeable.
Have any of you experienced this? Can I adjust the controls or wings to counter this issue? I was going to dig back into the builder manual this weekend and see if it says anything about trim adjustment.

Jimchuk, to be honest I have not looked at the plugs yet. I will do that tomorrow. I read over some set up guild lines today and ordered one size larger jets. The plan is to reset the needle to the richest setting and fly it like that until the new jets get here. Once they do I’m doing to take one degree out of the prop, rejet and go from there.

I was invited to fly down with a group but Im still working out the bugs with the new bird so I opted out. Sounds like a good time.

Thank you nlappos, Right now I am set to the required jetting for my Engine/Altitude. With the needle in the bottom slot I get good temps but still on the cool side. The book says there should be a 50 degree temp change per needle adjustment. I'm seeing more like 150 degrees. One needle position changes everything drastically. Maybe I'm going at this wrong. Maybe I need a bigger Main jet then lean the needle to the desired temps. I have not played with the Main jet because my WOT temps are good which normally means the correct amount of main jet. My problem is in that small range between 6800 and 6000 where I fly 85% of the time.
JimChuk, I have two tachometers. One good quality Rotax Tach and a Tiny Tach. Both are reading the same. I contacted GSC and they recommended the prop I currently have but they said I should be set at 12 to 13 degrees pitch and I'm running 16 to keep things cool. I not getting the RPM's i should either.
Maybe its time to start from the beginning and resetting the propeller to the desired RPM range and re-jet from there.
    Thoughts??

My static is 5850. This is where I have to be to keep the EGT's in check. WOT in straight and level flight the RPM's will start at 6100 build to 6450. WOT in climb I 6000.

This is the best readings I get in the richest needle position. One up and EGT’s go to 1200.

    Prop length
Ive been fighting with temps and feel the 64 inch three blade GSC is not loading the engine enough.  Joey said he is running 70 inch on both his planes. What prop and blade length are you running on your 582 powered airplanes?
I go from running to cool to to hot with one clip position change.  It’s starting to get aggravating.

Sorry, the radio is working a lot better than before. The new RG400 coax took out a lot of noise out.  There is room for improvement but I've been focused on flying and not so much on the radio. I was in the pattern yesterday talking to an inbound jet 19 miles out. Still getting a pretty good whine at higher RPM settings. I will install new plug wires and shielded caps as soon as I get a few other items take taken care of.
I have not done anything with the Amp gauge yet. It's another thing on the list along with installing my Facet Pump and hooking up my fuel pressure gauge.

I flew another 1.4 yesterday after work after making a few more adjustments to the carburetors. I re-timed the slides, leaned the idle circuit, and made a needle adjustment. Everything is looking better but the temps are running just a bit lower than I would like in the mid-range and cruise. I think one more adjustment to the needle and I should be good to go.
Another item that needs addressed is to add baffling around the cheek radiators. my water temps are quick to rise when the airplane is in a steep climb. In the Idaho Back Country this is something I will be doing often. The temps come right down after lowering the nose.
I'm also going to add Gap Seals to the elevator and VG's added.
    More updates to follow.....

John M, The Johnson Creek strip is definitely on my to do list. We have a lot of little Back Country strips here locally that I can get my feet wet on. I hope to have my 40 flown off and some Back Country strips under my belt before next spring. When do you normally go in there? Do you do the annual fly-in? We will definitely be talking more about this.

    Mountain Avid finally Flys
Yesterday was the big day. It was time to see if it actually flys after several modifications and going through the Inspection process. Despite a couple of recent set backs with my Flight Reciew and a broken aileron hanger everything was ready. Rain came and took the heavy smoke out of the area.
The first flight lasted about 30 mins. I came back and made a needle adjustment and did another look over the plane to make sure nothing was falling off. All looked good so I took it up again. I flew up to Hackney Airpark and met up with The Machinist. The wind really kicked up so we left there and flew over to Treeport Airfield. The wind was a little crazy there too but we got in without damaging anything. After some fuel and phone calls we decided to fly back to KCOE where my hanger is and get lunch and fuel. The wind was better there and we made it in easily. After lunch and fuel The Machinist decided he was going to fly into a local back country strip. I opted out until I get a few more hours in the valley.
I flew 3.9 hours total. I have a few adjustments to make  I’m going to fill in around the radiator as my temps in climb get near 180. When I level out they set about 165. I’m still seeing high EGT’s in cruise. The temps are perfect in all other phases of flight. I’m convinced I need more prop. I’m running a GSC three blade 64 inch. Max RPM in climb is 6200. It’s time to look at a longer prop and possibly different jetting. Its just in that rpm range between between 5800 to 6000 right where you cruise 85% of the time.
    Here are a few pictures

I would turn that shelve into a work bench/pegboard. Take all the shelves off, cut the two front uprights down the 32' to 36" (whatever height you prefer a work bench),frame in a work bench with two of the shelves, use the two uprights you cut off ripped into 1 x 1's to frame in the peg board, and use the last shelf to put a shelf under the work bench.
Attached in a picture of the one in my hangar that I made out of my old wing building table. I would have made the lower shelf full length and tied it into the main legs but my hangarmate wanted a place for the vacuum cleaner. I have a better example in my garage at home.

Chris, This shunt it mounted right over top of the battery behind the seat and I assume was suppose to connect to the main battery positive lead.  The other feed line would have to come from the line between the charging system and the main power buss. Wouldn't it be smarter to mount this behind the instrument panel? A short lead from the positive starter poll and another from the main feed wire from the charging system should make for a working Amp gauge.
    OR
Since the shut is mounted nicely behind the seat I could run a jumper to from the battery positive and a wire from the front to complete the circuit.

Lol, Yes that will kill any good battery. I'm happy with the 3 pounds I saved over the old standard battery. Maybe an earthx will be in my future. Still putting kids through school.

The extra $250 plus the need for a different charger was not in the budget at this time. Pretty impressive though....

I’d like to take credit for this bundle of electrical excellence but it was already installed this way then I got the airframe. It’s one of the things I just looked over while putting the rest of the plane together. It will get installed correctly.
Does anyone else run one of these. How is yours installed?  Location of the Shunt? Wire size to the Shunt?

Close. The shunt read voltage drop between the battery positive and the main alternator wire before the main power buss.  This thing is hooked up totally wrong and missing one leg to the main terminal.

    Battery trouble
After finishing the rib tail repair I pulled the plane outside to run it. The battery did not have enough juice to turn it over. The battery was on a good trickle charger all week because the last couple of times I went to use it it was almost dead.  I pulled the battery and it was toast. Ran down to the local Batteries Plus store and picked up a new Odyssey PC545. Saved 3 pounds over the old battery. I had to mod the battery box because the new battery was shorter. It’s all ready to install. Hope to test fly this thing this weekend FINALLY!!!
