    Flying off paved runways
    Now that the Avid Mark IV is about ready for some serious flying I want to start working on my paved runway skills.Having those skills will open up a lot of more airports for me.  I have flow off grass all of my Avid life. I have literally made one paved runway landing in this thing. I have not tested the approachable speed limits of this thing because of the trim issues and I find myself making approaches faster than I need to. I have to say I am a little intimidated because the plane I trained in was such a handful it made me gun shy about short coupled tail wheel planes on pavement. I have the option at my field to use the grass but that not what its about......its about being able to land wherever I need to and be proficient at it. 
    I have several hours flying a Champ off pavement with no issues. 
    I would love to hear from you guys who fly these off pavement on a regular basis. If you could share the techniques you use (type of approach, flaps, speeds...ect.) and the things you have learned I would appreciate it and I'm sure other who are putting one of these together could benefit from it also.

    Thank you Avid Randy. I like the Belight gauge a lot. It gives you at glance information and has proven to be more accurate than my steam gauge Altimeter. I do not have it hooked to a static port but I do have all the static lines ran in series to a small air filter behind the dash. When I set the B/P on the Altimeter and the Belight the Belight is reads very close to field elevation where the Altimeter is not even close. Joey likes his too. I would recommend it for sure.

    Update: flew an hour this evening and I’m happy to report the plane flys like it’s supposed too. Roll rate is back and the plane feels solid. I set the Ailerons reflexed 2 degrees. I can’t believe how bad it was before. I leaned out the idler circuit, adjusted the needles and timed the slides. Temp were great. Still would like to see more RPM on take off. The new prop is supposed to be here tomorrow. Hope to get this thing dialed in this weekend.

    Looks like a piece of metal filled in with white silicone? Can you provide any details? How did you mount it?
    I have a friend that works magic small fiberglass molds. I'm thinking I could have him help me make molds of these. Attach with two sided tape??

    Flap travel
    After adjusting the flaperons I decided to check throw of the flap system. The stop bolt that was installed between the seats had them set at about 11 degrees of deflection. I installed a shorter bolt and was able to get 13.2. The book says to set them at 15 or less. I looked over the linkage and it does not look like there is adjustment for anymore length throw. Any Idea.
    Any Ideas?

    I have given some thought into this same subject because winter is coming on. I thought about using a uni-bit to drill a hole in the rear corner of the small rear side window. At Ace Hardware they sell rubber plugs. A person could drill a hole through the center of the rubber plug , cut one end off of the two prong wire you posted a picture of above, stick the wire through the hole in the rubber plug and install the plug back into the hole in the window. I would then put ring terminal connectors on the cut off ends and wire the hot and ground directly to the corresponding battery posts. 
    A guy could also install one of the window vents and do something similar.

    Update/Dumb Stunt: I went to the hangar this morning and pulled out the other control mixer I had. After removing the other threaded adjuster rod I noticed they were the same exact length as the other one I had. I looked at the other side and sure enough it was longer. I went back to plane and found the same thing. 
    I hate to admit this but when I took all apart the last time to clean and make sure everything was installed correctly I accidentally reinstalled the adjuster rods back in the wrong sides. After I swapped them back everything fits much better now and I had plenty of adjustment to level the ailerons. You wouldn’t believe how far they were out. Funny thing too is I could tell something didn’t feel right but it didn’t fly horrible. They were literally 2.7 degrees out from each other and the worst one was 4.3 from being level.  I’m kinda excited to fly it again to see how it feels. I bet it will be a huge difference. 
    I will report back after I fly it. 
    Lesson: if you do anything to your controls make sure you level the wings per the manual and recheck your control angles. If I would have rechecked this I would have found the problem immediately. I got lucky.

    JohnM, I will post pictures of my electrical setup. My ground are all to a common place in the front and I do have another ground point in the back by the battery. 
    I’m usimg a Icom A6 radio. 
    Yes, my wings is undercambered.

    I have another aileron mixer set out off my uncles wreckes bird. It was a newer airframe. I wonder if they have the updated parts?? I’ll have to check the hangar tomorrow morning.

    I pulled the builder manual out tonight and did some checking. The wings are darn near perfect. The flaperons are off. The book calls for minus 3 degrees. Here is a couple of pictures taken with the wing leveled, flaps neutral and the stick centered.

    Ultra-prop II
    I have a friend who has been raving about this propeller he just installed on his plane. It's not a new company but they have a newer product. I'm talking about the Ultra-prop which has been used on Ultralight for years. I had one on a Quicksilver MX years ago and it was a very smooth propeller. My friend just installed their new Ultra-prop II solid carbon reinforced propeller with Helix high efficient airfoil. He says its the smoothest propeller he had ran to date and it gives him excellent climb performance. They still use the pitching blocks which eliminates the need for a protractor. I ordered a new 66 inch three blade and will give you a full report when I get it installed.

    Thank you for the detailed email John M. 
    I will look into the capacitor. Where did you install it exactly? I will give the mag check thing a try. My kill wires are not grounded but that should not be to hard to make happen. I am already using the resistor plugs. 
    I do not have an enrichener circuit (choke) only a pimer bulb. Would I get the same effect by shooting it some fuel with the primer?  
    I have had the same discussion about the Vg's with other guys. Most feel they are not needed on the HH wing. My wing has double faults ribs (three faults ribs between the main ribs) which does not leave a lot of flat area to put them anyways. I bought them for my Zenith 701 anyways so they will not be wasted.

    Fred, I love the looks of those Simonini engines. I wish there were more of them in the States. I would love to look at one.

    Chris you bring up another interesting thing I have noticed. My Dad had an A model Avid. It was very light and nimble on the controls. This new plane feels very wing heavy. I was kinda bummed that it didn't have the same feel as the ole A. I contributed it to the heavier plane and the extra weight in the wings. maybe this is a different issue???
