my guess is air being sucked in by the fuel pump through a small leak in the filter .my plane quit on its first flight because of a small air leak on a filter .fuel pumps sucked the air and drained the header tank.test pilot shut all electrical off then it started it gravity feed and flew it back(he was at 9000ft). or its something else completely j,just what came to mind

thanks ,I bought the plane from an aircraft painter with new wings so paid him to do the fuse to match .its federal yellow from stewerts systems.amazing paint but hard to work with .super shiny though

mine has foam seal with silicone spread on to the three exposed sides of it .I did it that way on the doors also and it seemed to work well

it sure looks great though .my wife says I have tire envy.the 27" are coming out for a 8" wheel .I would like to do a brake upgrade to at the same time.any one know what the best 8"wheel and brake combo is and where to get them?

the crankshaft flange isn't in engine but with the engine ready for prsu install the open pan is underneath it,i covered it with a rag and the blew the chips out with compressed air to keep them from going in the pan ,that's why the picture made me think of that I suppose

first thing that came to my mind was chips from a tap.my rotary flight int. redrive requires tapping the end of the crankshaft from the obscure 9 mm to common hardened 5/16 thread , those look like the chips that came off my crankshaft . but I don't know where they would have been hiding for 200 hours.

put the gears in it today and it runs perfect, 6500 at 12 degrees pitch. ill be on the water this weekend.it should perform a lot better with extra 13hp.

exactly ed, it would have oversped the prop.i happen to have an abox on an old 277 that has a 2.58 gearset . I pulled those today and ill put em in tomorrow. maybe get it in the air by this weekend.

thanx for all the replies ,ive been haunted by this thing for two weeks.turned out it was 2.0-1 gears in a 2.58-1 box .I was almost going to tear it down out of frustration. glad to have figured it out anyway . thanx again for the assistance ,I hate to ask for help but that one had me stumped.

i never did manually check the box ratio.it says 258 on it but i guess there is no guarantee that's whats in there.ill check gear ratio this morning

582 low on powersince my avid is flying well I decided to repower my other little floatplane with a 582 to replace the 503.i bought a used grey head off barnstormers and installed it ,put the prop on it(off 503,warp drive )and it will only pull 3500 rpm . I dropped the pitch to 7.5 and will still only pull 5000.i checked timing today and was right on .compression is 105 -110 hot. egt 850.I am not a mechanic and need a little help deciding what to check next.it starts fine and idles .jets aren't plugged .engine is really low on power. thanx in advance for your time

make sure the bleed screw is the highest point in the cylinder or air will stay above it
