  1. Good info. When I burn through my 50:1 Penzoil mix I will switch to the 100:1 if its really safe. 2-stroke oil is getting expensive.

I wish more airports carried mogas but I understand why they don't. I was looking at 6a4's quote for 93 octane no ethanol mogas. The cheapest he could get it would be around $4.70 a gallon. Nobody would buy it. You could drive 5 minutes and get it for $3.70 at the local gas station and that stuff is ethanol free too

  2. I just installed my 72" ivo ifa. I'm hoping my cruise will come up. I also removed most of my panel which let me take that Venturi off the side, that must give me 3mph or so.

I wish I was the builder, adding a tank would be a lot easier and much cheaper. A$P's and IA's charge a lot!

I could also kick the person who took the Hacman control off my 582. It's in the logbook as being installed in 2008 but its not there now ! I even have all the manuals with it! God would that help me some.

  3. If only I could swap my all aluminum 383 stroked ls1 into my kitfox. Probably get better fuel burn with 400hp and 400tq. A guy can dream, haha

  4. I am purchasing non ethanol 90 octane for around $3.70 a gallon right now, me and a few others at the airport take it upon ourselves to test this "no ethanol" fuel and it turns out to be ethanol free most of the time. Very little to no water content. When we do find water we take it back and believe it or not the gas station will refund us our money or give us fresh no ethanol fuel. The company is called Rush Fuel of Tennessee.

I have such a hard time paying $6 a gallon for 100ll. It's a shame fuel is so high. Being 22 years old I don't make much money, barely scraping by. I worry I will not be able to afford my lil old kitfox in a few years if fuel keeps getting higher.

  5. From what I understand the rave valve opens just at or over 6,500 rpm.

The mixture control (HACMan) does NOT work with the 670, has something to do with the RAVE valve.

Greensky and Rotax Rick confirmed this for me

I am using the NavMan 2100 as a fuel totalizer/flow gauge. It gives me total fuel, fuel burned per trip, total fuel burned and a very accurate flow rate. It also allowed me to install 2 external warning led's. One comes on in the event of a fuel line blockage and the other tells me when to turn my fuel pump on when my wing tank is almost empty. It works quite well.

My idling fuel burn used to be 1.5 GPH at 3,000RPM. I recently installed an AirTech RK400 clutch and my fuel burn dropped to 0.2 GPH at 1,500RPM. That's a big difference if your stuck behind some traffic on departure.

If I do not switch to the rotax 670 then I am going to add another wing tank and eliminate the tanks behind the seat. My airplane simply does not have the endurance to take me anywhere right now. With 15 gallons of usable fuel and 6gph fuel burn your options are limited

Or I can throttle back and deal with a 70-75 MPH cruise

  6. We occasionally get 100ll around $5.90 but its an act of god. Fuel is high here in the southeast, more so then up north it seems like

  7. I wish I could figure out what kind of oil guys are running at 100:1. I would think it is Amsoil Saber. That is a 100:1 specific ratio formula.

I wish I didn't live in a part of the country where $6.50 100ll is normal. Cost me about 90 bucks to fill up plus the oil, so I'm well over $110 a tank right now

  8. I'm currently burning 6GPH at 6,000 RPM with barely an 80mph cruise on a Kitfox IV in a clean configuration

On takeoff I burn 6.5GPH at 6,500 RPM

If I back the power off below 6,000RPM my speed drops significantly.  (sub 75mph)

I am using a fuel totalizer and flow meter at all times.

I had a long conversation with Rotax Rick.  He explained to me that the 670 and the 582 work very much the same except for the RAVE valve.  At the same RPM's the two engines make the exact same power, even with his custom "tuned" exhaust.  The difference is the 670 can be cranked up to 6,900RPMs and the RAVE valve opens giving you more power for climbing.  That extra 400RPMS is what gives you the additional 25 HP).  At full throttle (6,900) the 670 will burn between 6.5 and 7 GPH in a Kitfox IV.  When you level off you throttle back between 5,800-6,000RPM.  You WILL NOT cruise any faster with this engine but you will climb alot more.  He explained that it takes alot of effort for the 582 to maintain 6,000RPMs hence the high fuel burn, with the 670 it just kind of chugs along at this RPM sipping about 4 or 4.5 GPH.  He recommended NOT running this engine above 6,000RPM other then for climbing, it will significantly reduce the life of the engine just like running the 582 at 6,500 all day long would not be good.

For someone like me that only has 15 Gallons of usable fuel it would make a world of difference reducing my fuel burn that much.  I would go from a 2 hour 15 minute endurance to almost 3 hours and 15 minutes.  That is a HUGE difference, I could actually take a fun trip instead of being stuck in the local area.

  9. Does anyone here have any information on burning premixed 100LL in the 582?

I've been trying to figure out how to X-Country my KitFox but no one here in NC or the surrounding area have MOGAS.  Looks like 100LL would be the only option if I wanted to venture away from my home airport.

I just hear all this talk of "oh it causes buildups which increases compression and causes detonation and you will DIE DIE DIE".

I'm just searching for the truth.

I have also switched to a mixture of 70:1 with 1-2 OZ of Marvel Mystery Oil per 5 gallons.  Seem's to work well, doesn't drop the octane rating of the fuel as much and it smokes ALOT less.

The local guys are burning 100:1 ratios with even less MMO as me.  They all say it works fine for them

  10. I have a distant family member who knows how to work the system, makes me sick.

He just got a 4 million dollar disability settlement from the now "bankrupt" state of Michigan. Yet he still works as a chef full time making decent money. He gets a regular paycheck and is paid in installments every month on the settlement. He's been doing this since he was 18, he's 30 now.

    Socialist!

  11. Happens a lot. A buddy if mine just had to repair an RV-7 wing for a fellow who took off with the fuel set to off in Virginia. Engine quit at 300 ft agl, he managed to get it turned around and on the runway but drug the wing pretty badly on the Tarmac. Most people would not have been so lucky at 300ft

  12. Hi and welcome!

Maybe you can find a MKIV engine mount and cheek radiator setup for a MKIV from one of the many who have converted to four strokes. You could get rid of all that external plumbing and radiator under the plane and have a much cleaner setup. It's a very clean install that is very easy to work on and maintain. That was my experience anyway. I flew for 1200 hours with that setup, and found it easy to install and remove the engine for maintenance and the overall setup proved very reliable over a very long time.

    Just a thought,

    Chris

I am looking to do this but I cannot find the radiators used and they are $1200+ new for the kit. Out of my price range.

Cannot wait to see this thing fly Paul. I think with all the mods it's going to be a great avid

I also remembered I have a brand new leaf spring for your Tailwheel if you need it. It's a single leaf but it's a strong one. Came out of my new 3 leaf pack. 3 leaf springs are way to much for my solid maule Tailwheel. I removed one

  13. Glad to hear all this.

Fortunately I am a skilled brewer / distiller and the humvee is stashed in the woods. It's s nice one too, 1997 amg built. I've got the landing spot too!!!

No surrendering here, been dug in well for years

Have you guys ever seen the show mountain men on the history channel with the yellow j3 cub. That guy Eustace lives a couple miles away from me. You should hear his opinions on this stuff.

  14. The alternative is a vertical radiator on the side or a belly radiator like my kitfox. I wish I had the cheek radiators though.

Looks like a nice avid though and good luck with it. Hope to see it flying soon

  15. I was unclear, in the cars we had a harness bar behind the seats, the belts would ride along the setback brace which actually put the harness at the proper angle across your shoulder, then they turned down and ran all the way to the trunk. This allowed us to utilize the full length of the harness while still keeping it on your body and seat properly.

  16. I'm not sure how old everyone is here but I'm 22, I still fondly remember teachers in school being very liberal and always talking about how we need free health care. I never bought into it. I'm a bit of a loner and very much a libertarian of sorts. I think we need total reform in a radical way but I can't say too much, haha. I live in a college town where people love Obama. I don't fit in, haha

    My future scares me

Thank god I have guns, a humvee and my fox. Soon none of them will be legal at the rate we are going

  17. I've flown with the dynon and sky view. I'm using an iPad if that tells you anything. If I wanted to spen $1,400 I would personally buy the Sagetech Clarity SV. Then you will have full synthetic vision, weather, ads-b, wifi, Ahrs and its dead accurate with a redundancy system. You can even add Efis with a wireless sensor kit

The subscription for the dynon sucks. $500 a year for using their sky view system. The Sagetech and xavion are one time purchases and they update their software frequently. I realize the D1 doesn't have this but it's still pricey

The manager at my home base just finished building his 5th RV and decided to use the sky view. It worked great for 3 months. Last week it stopped working and when you try to use it a screen pops up asking you to pay for a subscription for the sky view service. $500!

I read somewhere that the Sagetech is proven to be just as accurate as the dynon systems.

  18. Thank you again, always seem to have the answers.

I'm trying to decide what to do, buy the axle adapters and remount the ATV wheels, Matco Brakes and 21" Nanco's or.....

Keep the Grove 6"ers with the powerful Grove brakes and dish out the cash for the better tires.  Decisions, decisions.

The cheapest I have found the 21x800 - 6 tires from is eBay for $267 shipped and then I would need tubes.
