I just bought a Hobart 140 mig welder with sheilding gas last night. Can I get a smaller nozzle so I can work around clusters better if I have to? Trying to get my shop in shape so I can start working on my project. I need to bring my Bandit in after deer season this fall and pull the engine and send it in. Then I would like to weld tabs on the belly so I can attach the belly pan better. Need to cut out a new windshield to.

    Wire feed welding
Can I weld mounting tabs on my airframe with a wire feed welder or do any other welding with it? It looks like they used wire feed on some parts because you can see parts of the wire left on the weld.

After flying 7hrs with my 2 bladed prop, I seemed to have a bad vibration around 4700rpm and even noticed roughness at cruise speed. I put the 3rd blade back on tonight and it seemed much smoother through all throttle settings. I did lose some cruise speed, but I just run it a little harder now. Maybe thats why my engine mount bolt broke, not sure.

Nice looking airplanes! I can't wait to get started on it. I will have some questions on it once I get going. Later this fall I need to get my Avid in the shop to pull the engine and send it in. I also have to put a another new windshield in, replace a couple of senders on the EGT and CHT gauges, put a new belly pan on and patch the fabric between the gear where my old bungee's used to go through. How do I patch that with all of the exhaust oil on the fabric? I would also like to replace the tapes between the gear on the belly also, the paint is all cracked on them.

    Sky Raider 1
I have always had in the back of my mind to build a Ridge Runner or Sky Raider some day. I wasn't in any hurry to buy one unless I found a super good deal. Well sunday at a local flight breakfast my friend which is the mechanic at the airport said he had a deal for me. He had a Sky Raider 1 with heavier, bigger gear, heal brakes, bigger tail section, trim tab, 2 doors, 4130 stringers on the fuselage, drooped wing tips, fabric, tapes, wheel ski's, big and small tires, bungee gear, 2 gas tanks ect. The wings are pretty much built. The Fuselage is on the gear, floor boards, brakes, wheels are all installed, flap handle is on, tail section on. Wings fitted to airframe, but no engine. Once I get it home and everything organized I will know more about the airplane, looked good so far though. So now I have a 582 grayhead FWF for a Avid Flyer or for any other airplane for sale. I would like to put a 503 in the Sky Raider.

I agree with you Joey, never did like the oil injection pump arm. It is just to much of a wear point with all that vibration. I am using Amzoil HP injector oil at 50 to 1 mixture. I did buy a mixture cup that has all of the mixing ratio's on it. Now I feel much better when I don't have to worry about the pump any more. Only time will tell if it was a good decision. Another nice thing is I got rid of my oil tank and took some weight off my airplane which doesn't happen to often.

Made a couple of changes to my Bandit
I was running a IVO 3 bladed prop. Wanted to get a little better cruise, called IVO. They said remove one blade and try that. After adjusting the pitch, I am now getting around 6200 rpm on take off and at cruise speed at 5850 rpm I am now getting around 5 mph faster cruise which is about 73 mph. Nice improvement. After the prop change I noticed a gap between the engine mount and crankcase. Turned out that the washer was missing. Cut my safety wire on the engine mount bolt and the bolt pulled right out. It had sheered off and then the washer fell out. This might be something you might want to check before every flight. After removing the broken bolt and replacing it with a new one I figured I better inspect my oil pump injection arm a little better. This has always been a high wear area and a pain in the ass. Sure enough my bolt was just about worn through the pump arm. Also the spring would not return the pump to full rich if it broke. So I made the decision to pull the pump and switch to pre mix. Now I have one less problem to worry about.

Never used a drop of ethanol in 900 hrs and my tanks still rotted out.

Test all electrical componets. Adjust pre-load on B-gear box. Rebuild carbs, and hone cylinders. They did not replace the crank. New cranks are $1000.

Anybody going to Airventure this year? My wife and I will go out Saturday and stay until the next Sunday. We will be camping on the private land across from the Ultralight runway. The flaperon party is at the seaplane base, Thrusday at 12 o'clock.

At 300hrs I had LEAF overhaul it. Of course they replaced the crank, pistons, rings, bearing ect. 600hrs I sent it to the Ultralight Place in Il. and Jim Leon did the work. He did not replace the crank so I have 600hrs on this crank. They did replace the pistons rings, bearings ect. He did have to bore the sleeves. I did have him go through the carbs and the gear reduction unit also. I may have been a little cautious with my engine, but I think it has paid off in the long run, because I have had no trouble with it. Years ago I sent my carbs to Mike to have him convert them to the manual mixture control. I think it was the Artic Sparrow Mixture control system. That sure has been a great modification. Not sure if anybody does this any more. Joey I did not get your e-mail.

    900hrs. TT
I just hit 900hrs. TT on my Bandit this last weekend. My 503 has been running great over those hrs. I am going to wait until later this fall to overhaul it, if I'm still going to use it. Still debating whether to use the 582 grayhead FWF package I bought last winter. I am not sure what advantage the 582 would be. 95% of my flying is solo and local, so the 503 has worked fine.I'll talk to people out at Oshkosh and make a decision this fall. If I keep my 503 I am going to sell the 582 FWF. When I pull the engine I would like to figure out how to install a 3 piece windsheild. This will be th 3rd one I have installed. As usual it is cracking on the bend as it wraps around the side. Tryed heating it and then bending it around, I thought this would releive the stress but that didn't work either.

You can tell when the tube is slipping when the valve stem is no longer straight out from the rim. If it is at an angle it will cut it.

I had trouble with my stems cutting on the King Fox tires. I switched to Aero Classic tires.

I hope to get over to the airport this week sometime, I'll take pictures. I don't think you will be able to see much though. I glassed bothed sides and edges with the thinest cloth I could buy. Only glassed the rib tail that is exposed to the elements.

I have pull start on my 503. Never had a problem with it, a matter of fact it starts better in the cold than in the summer. I start it from outside the cockpit, 2 to 3 pulls. I would never put electric start in mine unless for some reason I could not pull start it because of a physical reason. Remember you are adding much more weight with that system, not worth it for me.
