That could very well be a problem. I recently installed the clear hose and have yet to see any coolant in it?

What exactly is that vent designed to do?

I would like to give that alu rad a try. I should've snagged the ebay alu rad we discussed a few months back on ebay. Iirc, they were less than $200, and probably the same thing. The summer temps here in LA are hot. I would love to see a 10-20deg drop.

I'm glad you mentioned Murle, i need to replace my plastic header tank. And I see he has one with a low fuel sensor too. Nice.

    Ok, looks only.... Hmm.

I did like the looks of the scoop when I saw your bird at OSH....

Flew yesterday. Temps stayed in check, but I was distracted by the leaking carb to postflight the cooling system...

I've been thinking of installing the "radiator scoop kit" from kitfox. Thoughts? Better ideas? Does it help to lower temps a bit? Speed mod?

If nothing else, it looks good

Rotax Rick did the engine. I know he went throught the carbs, but not sure what parts were replaced.

Not sure where its leaking from. Its not leaking sitting. But evidence of leaking in flight. Bad thing is it leaks on the muffler.

I actually have the o-haul kits in stock. If I dont find anything obvious like junk stuck in the needle valve or float level too high etc..., I'll start replacing parts. I can't figure they need new parts this soon after o-haul if indeed they were replaced.

Engine and carbs? were overhauled less than a year ago. I'm only assuming the carbs were done too.

I do have wing sumps and a gascolator. I guess you are correct, that should be plenty of catch options. Plus i filter my gas through a mr funnel too....

Although my saratoga has a filter in the electric pump, and a filter in the carb. Along with the wing sumps and fuel selector sump.....

    Inline fuel filters
Another great evening of barnstorming. Bird runs great!

But on the post-flight, I noticed evidence of my mag carb leaking. So next project is to pull the carb and give her a good cleaning, check the float level, float needle valve etc....

But this got me to thinking about inline filters. I have finger filters at the tanks, but I cant see them to inspect.

Any recommendations for a good filter? I intend to install one on each feed line coming from the wing tanks to the header tank.

    How many "tops off"?

Rad cap off and bleed screw out and run her?

It is a nice piece, but it came with the airplane. I think it was standard issue with the KF kit back in the 90's. i know some have replaced them with a larger expansion tank.

    Cooling system
    Here is my cooling system.

    Anyone successfully running this configuration?

Today while running my idle checks, I noticed my water temps climbing, but ramping up the rpm would cool it off again. Feels like my coolant may be low. Shut her down and noticed my overflow bottle was full. Hmm. Ok.... I let her cool off a bit and then pulled the 5mm plug out of the top of the 90 elbow on the head. Dry. Blast. Topped off the coolant through that plug. Started her back up. Nice and cool. Shut down, pulled the plug again and I was able again to pour in a bit of water. I thought for sure she would have been pumped full of coolant after the last top off.

So what the best procedure to get the system purged?

Moderate success! I leaned out my 55's to the point where my airscrews were about to fall out. I installed the 45's and with two turns out, she now runs smooth around 2200-2300. She was so rich that the idle was 1800 and struggling. Now she idles at 2000 with some roughness, but i bump her up to 2300 and she is smooth. I'm happy with that. Much better than 3k! Happy, happy happy....

My midrange and wot seem to be fairly well adjusted. I do have a 50deg egt split at all throttle positions other than wot. My guess would be my sliders are slightly out of sync? Tomrs project

    Cooling.... New thread coming up

Can I expect a smooth motor at 2000rpm with a 3:1 C box with proper jetting and leaning without a clutch?

Tiny tach on the want list.

Ill try the 45's since I have them.

Ok. I'll get some more tuning done. Chart calls for one full turn. I'm at two turns and running smooth around 2700. Noticeably smoothed out. 3000 was about where she was previously happy. I'd certainly like to get her smooth at 2000. I was wondering how many turns out before you would consider the 45's? For some reason I have four 45's in my stock so experimenting is cheap.

Perhaps a clutch is in my future, however I know she can be better than she is now. That being said, I'm not running at idle for long anyway. After start, I will warmup at 3000

My midrange and top end seem very smooth. But I'll be going through it to confirm settings.

I did finally install a generic electric tach and reset the prop pitch accordingly. Wow. I have a new airplane!

55's currently installed. Have you guys had any luck trying to sufficiently lean with the 55 or do you just go with a 45 from the get-go?

And what rpm do you aim for? 2000? 2200?

For ethanol testing, use an olive jar, ketchup jar etc... Mark a line about 1" from the bottom, fill to that line with water, and then fill to the top with the gas you are testing. Shake and let it settle....

Ethanol mixes with water and you will notice your "water level" has risen. If it is e-free, the water level will stay the same.

Or just get some cake food coloring and drip a few drops in the test bottle. The color will mix with ethanol laced gas not with pure gas.

Why does Rick recommend 40:1? I would love to back off on my oil additive. Seems i go through more oil than gas sometimes.

I have the 618. So far so good. Im still trying to get some clean numbers for fuel burn and speed. Right now she seems thirsty and slow! Slow I dont mind, but thirsty I do.

What fuel flow systems are you guys using? Yes, I'm sure a watch and a gas can back at the hangar should work fine....

I've got my prop set to 15deg, and I'm running 5800-6000 at cruise, 1100egt. My static is 6200 and wide open cruise is 6500. According to Rick, at 6000, I shouldn't be opening the rave valves. They really don't come into play until its screaming wide open which isnt what we do with these birds. For that reason, he did float the idea of wanting to secure the valves closed.

Today I need to give my cooling system a good once over. Doesn't help that its 97 today. But last night, after shutdown, my coolant was spewing out of the overflow bottle. I'm going to increase my water ratio to my coolant, check the cap gaskets, and make sure the overflow bottle has minimum fluid when cold.
