Good thinking Len - Just wondering why you did not swap your originals around and check your readings first.?

I think that TCP was recommended for getting the lead out? called "Tom Cat Piss" by a young fellow I met in the 1950s.
Dont have a clue as what is best. I used to run a mix of 1 gallon 100LL, 3 gallon Mogas, and (4 OZ.?) Marvel Mystery Oil in my C-75.

Good info. Randy, if you can buy the newer stiffener, I would go with that.
    Thanks Doug.

Here are copies from the manuals. KF did not have any dimensions,. Sorry, daughter put them upside down. Maybe can be corrected?
Daughter says its a new process, called "print and flip"!!!!

You said "Acrylic" - Think that is your problem: Lexan is not acrylic, Plexiglass is. Lexan is Polycarbonate.
Put a scrap piece in a vise, and try to bend it 90 degrees without heating - if it breaks, it is acrylic and not Lexan.

A builder with more experience than me might give you a better answer.
Are you sure about the quality of your Lexan? The reason I asked is because we cold-bent Lexan in a vise to 90 degrees without cracking it when I was in AMT school. We were also told that if you heated Lexan it would have about the same cracking qualities as Plexiglass. I never tested that theory. Bubble door Lexan is made by heating - don't know of any cracking.
We put the round vents in a Cessna window outside in 30 degrees, or less, by using a dremel tool grinder, with no cracking.
Oversize holes and rubber or soft plastic (cant remember alphabet name) are standard, and back off 1/2 to 1 turn after tightening slightly.
Guess you have to get a very accurate fit, and allow for expansion / vibration. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

And, I will second that motion!
Back to Stewart - I know everyone must be tired of this by now:
As I said, I Love their glue process - No more wet glue all over me - the Ekofill UV protection is not bad either.
Someone told me that after the Ekofill brush and spray, He used Randolph finish coats. Guess time will tell if his idea works.
Would take someone smarter than me to figure out things like that.
I'm finished beating this horse to death - been interesting tho!

Never said that either of you are wrong about Stewarts. Think it is good to get all this info out to everyone, and they can decide which poison to use. I think a good process would be to use Stewarts glue, and then whatever finish you want. I love the dry glue!
This will be my last build - Hope I can fly this one all the way to wherever old pilots go!

Me too! 20 years ago, Doctors told me to sell my welder, and stay away from all those bad chemicals I had been using for years, after losing a kidney.
My welding bill on this plane is nearing $3000, but my hospital bills were near $150,000! I chose not to weld or even be in the same room as welding.
My "Hero" was a 95 year-old who flew the original 1929 Stearman he bought new. Had his 80 year-old girlfriend hold the brakes while he propped it.
He passed away last year at age 100.
29 more to go for my century mark! So please excuse me if I seem adament about chemicals.
Hoping to get someone else to spray my plane. I did spray part of a J3 and the Stewart didn't bother me. (Lucky?)

I have had 2 sets of spars - One coated inside and out, the other just on the outside. Both are about 20 years old and look good.
You can use a tennis ball or tape to seal one end, and then slosh the inside and pour out excess paint.
I would at least use epoxy primer on the outside, or better yet, use a self-etching primer, and then a coat of epoxy on all metal parts.
Dont think you will add that much weight, and more protection is better, IMO. I put either Kilz and spray urethane or 3 coats of urethane varnish on all wood parts.

P.S. You can buy self-etching primer in a spray can at Lowes, and other places. Real Handy. My body-shop friend says it sticks better than epoxy primer, and you dont have to use alumiprep or alodine for it to stick.

I believe that their ad just says that the THINNER is water. If you watch the videos, they show and tell you about using the proper protection.
IMO, there is no safe system. I just hate the old systems so much, and like this one so much better, so will use it again.
One other good thing: NO explosion or fire hazard with Stewarts.
One last parting shot: There will NEVER again, be any MEK or Acetone, or welding in my shop!

Thanks for the info Randy. Now that you are using the WD, maybe you could experiment some with it and let me know what the pitches were and the distances and cruise speeds, if you can.

Thanks - OK to rant, IMO, if you think that there is a need to. I still plan to use that system, along with all the protective gear - I'm no chemist, but I sure don't like the old systems.
I worked in fiberglas for nearly 30 years - we were all concerned about the effects of grinding the glass fibers, but the company always downplayed our concerns. WHAT THEY DID NOT DISCLOSE, was the risk of the vapors from the epoxy and hardner!!!
Several of us got cancer - but no proof of what caused it.

Thanks for the photos - Looks like a nice clean solid setup - I guess I could figure out how to do it on mine, but I have spent so much time modifying and building that I will stay with the Avid setup and folding wings.
Is your wing trailing edge wood or metal? Guess you are going with light-fabric? Have you checked out the Stewart system?
BTW: Make sure you keep a cose eye on those cables - I got a little worried when a Cessna flap cable broke with me on final, just over the threshold - went into a 90 degree bank a wingtip over the runway (or seemed like it)!
I don't worry so much about push-pull tubes.
Cubs didnt have that problem: NO Flaps!

I have the Magnum manual and Kitfox 1, 4, 5 manuals. All setting behind a freshly epoxied garage floor - will get to them by Monday.
Seems like the Kitfox insert was longer than the Avid - I will check all manuals and send what I find. I wonder if I would get into trouble by copying a page from the manual and sending or posting it. Dont want to be sued for copyright infringement........?

Nice plane - Would like to see those rib hinges. How do you control ailerons & flaps? Wanted to make mine flush with wings, but at present am still with the KF / Avid design. Any builder's books available? Balanced tailfeathers look good - did that to mine.
    Do wings fold?
    What is gross weight?

Have heard of the Ridgerunner - is it copy of Kitfox / Avid? How are the ailerons / flaps attached?
Any place where I can get pictures, info? Where is it made?
    Just nosey!
I may have it confused with the Ranger (I think?) I pulled one up and it was all aluminum and 1000 bolts holding it together - too many nuts to come loose to suit my caution.

Noticed that you have had no feedack on this - I'm always interested in any building ideas.
Don't know what plane you are building, but wonder if making aluminum skin over whole aileron / flap might be easier / better?

The Magnum builders' manual certainly won't help you build from scratch. They don't even describe parts for assembly - just give you part numbers. Not anywhere as detailed as the early manuals, where they show you photos, drawings, and instructions on how to make the part yourself.

I think you will extend your build time about ten-fold if going scratch. If you want to fly, then buy the Magnum kit and modify it as you build.

Believe the limit is mostly about that - 100 clicks I think in Canada - 60 is good in Alaska - however, be prepared for waiting for a lead vehicle to get you thru construction - and a slow, bumpy ride at times.

We had to start to endure it about then - forced to it for trade purposes. Ended up having to pack a set of American tools and a set of metric tools in my truck because it had both kinds of bolts in it. I think my French cousins, (and others) really stuck it to us on that!
Now my plane has two sets, with a Jap engine and AN bolts in the rest!!!
I was a machinist - used to working in thousanths, and ten-thousanths of an inch. Metrics were a pain to convert!
It is a foreign system to us old-timers.
I experienced being a foreigner in your country many times starting some years ago:
I couldn't set the thermostat in my first motel room because is was Celcious - couldn't find anyone to translate it to Farenheiht for me either.
This is life, and we just have to make the best of it. Lesson: Carry conversion tables when traveling!!!

I could not find a number in my books to use for density of air at sealevel, 59 degrees F, if that is still standard day. Isn't that part of the formula - got to look at it again. If not, then disregard.

If that 3.7 formula you first gave is V= meters per second, then maybe I can convert that instead of the 11 mph that I thought was wrong. 11 m/s = Back to calculator.... OK - came up with 24.6 mph, and that is reasonable.
    Thanks, ED in MO

Never been that way. Always figured 6 days minimum from Great Falls to Anchorage. Last trip, gas was $1.50 to $2 a LITER, and truck, trailer averaged about 6 mpg. Motels not cheap, when you could get one - and food was lousey most of the way! Got rancid roast beef in restruant across from Whitehorse Airport, and worst KFC in Whitehorse I have ever eaten!
4000 miles - one way - from St. Louis.
    ED in MO
P.S. If you can get to TOK, Alaska before too late in evening, you can get the best food, and possibly a motel room, at FAST EDDIES.
Great Beer-battered halibut at restraunt at boat dock in Seward, and more of anything that you want at KLONDIKE INN at Soldotna.
One stop you have to make is the REGAL HOTEL restraunt at LAKE HOOD, in Anchorage (the name may have been changed) You can eat good food and watch float planes taking off right outside the windows.

John, can you translate that into American? What is the "^"? (Nevermind that question: I know it must mean you couldnt print a little 2 or 3 for squared or cubed.) Old flyers dont use sillymeters - only drug dealers and foreigners use Kg.
I would be glad to put this to use if you can put it into our terms.
I know engineers and scientists also use those terms, but most of us are just flyers.
    Thanks.
But I garantee, that if I started telling how many Kilos I could put in my plane, the Federales would be all over me!!!
