Priming AND painting the inside of the trailing edges would be a good idea - water can collect there. I have been told that primer will not block moisture as well as the finish paint. I use the Rustoleum self-etching primer and enamel in a spray can is good enough. I've had bad results with their spray epoxy - turned out to be like powder.
Buy a pack of 100 seaplane grommets from Spruce, and put one everywhere moisture could collect. At the trailing edges, one near the outer rear of each rib would be a prime place to put them. After you are finished with your finish, take a real red-hot ice pick or small rod and go into each hole in the grommets and open up the fabric - dont drill it or you will leave frizzies which will trap moisture.

Cant locate color code sheet for Lexan - Cadillac # is 9600, I think. Clear, Solar gray, Light Bronze - .080 to .500 thick.
NOW, I have stumbled on something in Lexan called "MAKROLON" which is referred to as "complies with FAR.......?
Got to check on this when I get time.
    ED in MO

Correction: 9034 is the one listed as having the tints. There are several varieties of GE Polycarbonate - One is listed as "bendable"?
Another is more of this , another is more of that? Enough to make you wish you hadnt started looking !
Makrolon is the same types of Polycarb as produced by BAYER. The FAR has to do with flamability, wouldnt worry about any of these.
Need more info - try looking it up....I'm done.

Second the motion on Decal, or bumper snicker.
On third thought - Just a Decal - hard to find a place for a bumper snicker on the birds !

Think it might be easier and cheaper to just replace the lower half with Lexan. You could add an angle inside and a strip outside of the edges where they meet if necessary. Later on, if you replace, you could do half, or go one piece.

One of my books says to use 8-32 machine screws with rubber under steel washers or nylon washers. Make holes at least 1/16th oversize and back off screws one turn after tightening to just touch washer.
Books show an aluminum angle riveted to crosstubes and both pieces bolted to it, with a flat or slightly bent aluminum strip on top. The rear is about the same, except you do not bolt your turtledeck.
Whatever you can dream up will probably work.

    GETTING UNGLUED
Does anyone know a chemical or other way of getting something unglued with the Hysol 9460?
I have used a torch, but want to save the wood fairing strips on struts when I change struts to bigger tubes.

Best to rivet and glue the mounts before you finish. Grimes lights (get the streamlined ones), or newer lights will fit it.
Believe I just saw some grimes lights on airplane parts on Ebay for $50.
Joe Norris at the EAA sent me a copy of the newest operating limitations which they are recommending everyone to use, and AC20-27G - I dont have them available right now, but that is what it says. I believe it is on the sign-off sheet for Phase 1 or 2 also.
They are also recommending anyone to copy those limitations and change to them because it lets you do modifications or major repairs without a new FAA airworthiness inspection, if I understand it right.
BUT - I think to change your old limitations to the new ones, you will have to go to your FSDO and maybe get a new inspection.
If you are fresh building - get a copy of these and do it now before your inspection.

    Robert,
You can read, download, pdf print, AC-20-27G on the FAA site. Think this is the latest for op. lims. and home-built rules.

I couldnt tell from your photos if you have the mount for the lights on your wingtips - if not, you should add it now.
Believe the operating instructions you will have will say, "night flight when properly equipped", or something like that, so you can add the lights and any other needed instruments later on to make it legal with only a logbook entry, IMO.
Look on ebay for used wingtip lights - believe I just saw a set there. You can replace the old bulbs with the new LED bulbs which dont take much juice.
Dont forget to add a mount for a taillight on your rudder if you are not going to pay a high price for the tip lights with the taillights on them. And, figure out your strobes, which are manditory, as is artificial horizon, etc.

Answering this before looking at your photos - dont know what tubes you are referring to, but not a good idea to leave off something the designer felt was needed, imo,.
PRIMING the spars may not be good, depending on the glue and system you are going to use. The weight is neglible.
If you are using Stewarts, I would leave the spars bare - their glue will bond better. Others glues will eat up primer, and will only be safe on epoxy.
I used KILZ on ribs, and spray polyurethene 2 coats - masked any area where glue or fabric will attach to wood. If you finish your rib capstrips, be sure to sand them before gluing.
    Congrats on progress.

  15. EDMO added a post in a topic INSTALLING HOERNER WING TIPS (HOW?)

Thanks Doug - mostly wanted to know how you did the trailing edges and if you put any reinforcements inside of tips.
I considered moving them forward, but then would have to make fiberglass extension on back, and I've had my hands in too much of that stuff and try to avoid it. I would also have to cut the front end out to mount the LEDs on the inside, and still bend Lexan for covers. Leaving the tips back and adding lights and lexan on front seems to be the easiest in this case.
Your Magnum book must be different than mine - I know what you mean by the shortened trailing edge, I saw that.
My book shows a triangle-shaped trailing edge sticking out a long ways from the rear of the wing, which is aerodynamically supposed to reduce drag by releasing the vortex farther away from the wing. Other books say that an up angle on these extensions helps too, although I imagine that they would have to be a well-matched pair to prevent one wing from seeming heavy, since they have a lot of leverage out on the tip of the wing .
Cant imagine these long tips when wing-folding unless one goes higher than the other when folded - otherwise looks like they would hit each other.

P,S. This tip looks like it could really poke your eye out if you dont duck....

  17. EDMO added a post in a topic INSTALLING HOERNER WING TIPS (HOW?)

Thanks anyway Doug. That wingtip looks like it is not Hoerner - It looks about 6 inches long in the photos - mine are about 10 inches at front and 15 inches at the trailing edge - will probably reinforce trailing edge with aluminum strip and glue.
I'm using Rivnuts instead of anchor nuts on the attach strip, which will be riveted to the wing after fabric covering. The tips have been cut and are only long enough for the original wing chord, so planning to mount the LED wig-wag lights on front of them and cover with Lexan to match extended leading edge.
I have manuals for KF 1, 4 & 5, none showing Hoerner tip mounting. Dont think my Avid Magnum or Aerobat shows them either.
    Maybe Raven?
will post photos in the far future.

    INSTALLING HOERNER WING TIPS (HOW?)
I know that Doug had some photos somewhere of installing these wingtips.
Did you add any reinforcements to the tips? How did you do the trailing edge?
I'm planning on removable with screws & not the hinges.

They are stripped down to T-shirts in Alaska by the time it hits 40F. 77 was about hottest I saw it in Anchorage, but Fairbanks gets real hot, like 90 or more - Morel mushrooms grow there and they dont grow under about 80F. Hottest in Barrow is about 45F.
Sitting here in 107F watching the grass and trees dying. Dreaming about getting into the bird and watching the frost form on the inside of the windsheild. Cabin fever and AC bills until then.

Thanks for the info Darcy, Anyone working for FSS should have more info than I do.
I was quoting from books on crossings I read some 10 to 15 years ago. The U.S. requires 12 inch numbers in some zones, and my book said that it was a regulation in Canadian crossings. I've heard of pilots painting them on with washable colors, and removing them on return to U.S. Of course, not all things are done by the book, but a foreigner might have more problems with the law than citizens. It spoke plainly about solid gas lines, and extra tanks, on border crossing inspections, and that was before 9/11.
    Leni,
Thanks for clarifying the lights - was told that if you have them, better to keep them on for safety around all those wild Alaskan pilots. But think that the FARs for Alaska said you HAVE to use them if you have them - that was 15 years ago in AMT school.
Don't matter much in a J3 unless you carry a big battery-powered portable spotlight - now why would anyone want to spotlight from a plane.....Maybe that explains some of the bullet holes going thru the back of props?.....HA!

P.S. Herman, Darcy gave you great info on routes too. The Alaska highway is always there for a landing strip if you need it. several small strips along it too. There is a $20 DVD, Flying the Alaska Highway, in Spruce, it also gives you Canadian crossing info, and you get a look at the AlCan (Alaska/Canadian) highway along the route to Whitehorse and beyond. No one ever told me I could call Whitehorse and go in without a transponder - guess I should have asked.

Darcy, Ive stayed at St. John many times - nice place & nice people there. Pulled trailers from Mel Stewarts there.
I think Herman said he would be coming up the Western route to the Alcan highway. I have only used some of the Eastern routes.

    Herman,
You or your son should get a copy of "THE MILEPOST" if you dont have one.
It gives you 20 times more information about every tenth of mile on the Alaska highway and connecting highways, as well as all the highways in Alaska. Food, gas, motels, canping, landing strips and everything else is listed in it. It is like a thick phonebook, and is the Bible for Alaska highway travel. It is sold everywhere in Alaska, and probably on the internet or in bookstores.

you must drive an "Outside" truck - Real Alaska trucks dont have AC, just like Florida trucks dont have heaters.

Alaska is like flying here - no transponder required outside of ATC zones.
Lots different flying in Canada - you need Canadian charts, have to check in at border airport, file and maintain flight plan and check in with radio, Have 12 inch numbers on plane, no pistols, file a firearms form for any firearm, cant be semi-auto with more than 5 in clip (I think), no military guns, Kiss Queen, etc. Lots of homework to do before crossing the border. Your son should have known all of this.
Better to ask than to receive the penalty for not asking. IMO
Oh yes, hear they frown on extra gas cans in plane and dont approve rubber fuel lines inside of cockpit, at least for us, I think.
Just happens that I have gone from Missouri to Alaska a dozen or more times and back on roads, and a dozen or more by plane, but never in my own plane - did check on it tho for future reference.
I think there are books on crossing Canada by light plane.
The Canadian bush flyers are like us and probably dont fly under the same restrictions that apply for crossing the borders and Air Defense Zones (ADZ)/(ADIZ).
Much easier to truck up to Alaska, IMO.
Also, there is a complete FAR rulebook for Alaska flying - you should get it too.
