    DIHEDRAL????
Just spent the day rigging the wings on a J3 - Came home thinking about Dihedral on Kitfox/Avid - Been thru 4 builders manuals and cant find a thing on it, except Avid Magnum says, "Dihedral is set at the factory"..,..Duh....Anyone got any answers?

So you got the lights cheaper because my internet went down and I would have run you up to $50...LLOL !!!!! GOOD FOR YOU. Actually, I never got to bid on them. Now you can order the LED bulbs and start wiring.......What was cost of Kitfox mounts? Dont know about buying wiring. Need to know someday myself.
    Good building,

FYI: The Grimes Model E position lights I was watching went for $32 + 8.50 shipping. Unfortunately, the storm or something took away my internet and I didnt get in on the last of the bidding.

P.S. Guess we had a good talk about lights - For other wiring, I would use Aircraft grade for CRITICAL wiring, and auto-wire for lights and non-critical stuff. I have the remains of a KF1 because the builder used a too small wire for the fuel pump, and that put him into a tree..........If you know amperage and length of run, I can look up the AWG in AC43-13.

    Robert,
I am watching a set of Grimes E model pos lites on Ebay - they are $32.50 now, but sure they will go for $50 or more.
SUGGESTION: For your "twilight" flying, you can get a new set of ultralight LED pos lites P/N 11-01356 for $36.75 from Spruce. These should work for you. If you buy Grimes for $50 plus shipping, and pay $44 plus shipping for 2 LED bulbs, you will have about $125 invested. If I didnt have my Grimes with the strobe attachment, that is the way I would go.

THANK YOU CANADA - and ALASKA
Best present we ever got from Canada was the shot of cold air and rain today. It was 95F (105 Heat Index) today, and no rain since June - in an hour it had dropped to 75F with lots of rain, and probably down in 60's tonight. What a relief...
Extemem drought has corn prices going sky-high, and shortages....But good old "green" government is still going to take 5 Billion bushels of corn from food supply and make subsidized ethenol gas out of it to soften our tanks and hoses !!!!!!!!!!!

I haveent been to Autozone in about a year - last time I was there I picked up some cool-looking LED streamlined lights, and a package of LED strobe buttons with a 12 volt battery-powered controller - sure they can be wired into a 12 volt system. Saw some other options there, but got to check them out again. Not spendy - by comparing aircraft prices.

I have never seen any photos - but you might contact Kitfox - I know they have lights on the McBean plane there. Since you ARE Experimental - and want to be "sort-of" legal, how about going to the autoparts store and scrounge around for something that would work? I have a Grimes tail light on my bench, but no mount - I have seen the mount welded to plain rudders like on the Champ. You just stretch your fabric over it and form a little streamlined bump. You also need a short tube or some provision thru which your wire will pass thru on its way to the rudder. A soft tube, epoxied, works. I am still looking for alternatives for my tail light, so let me know if you find something. LEDs would be great....

You are talking to a lifetime night-shifter - I rarely get up early, but chase the sun as it goes down, and want lights to appear legal, and not get hit - I am now Light-Sport licensed because dont want to take another medical - so not legal anymore for night flight. Guess I may have a touch of Epillepsy, as flashing lights really bother me - Take-down lights on patrol car used to be a bitch......

    Robert,
believe you should weld-in mount,or make provisions for a tail light before you cover. (Night-legal)
Whenever you go from day flight to night flight, you are in the FARs the same as a certified plane.

You read faster than I can edit and type my original post - please read it again - Check out your Spruce catalog for "LEGAL" strobe setups - there is a chart by Whelen, and you may have a different approach - I would not want a strobe where you had it - and almost sure it will not be legal alone for night flight. Probably OK in daylight if it dont bother you.

P.S. I tried to buy a pair of Grimes model E, pos. lites on E-bay this week - but dropped out when the bid went to $60. Thought maybe you or someone would want themn at cost - not over $50 - someday.

If you add strobe lights, you will need sheilded wire, and ground the sheild at each end. Usually, the alternator output is also sheilded. AC43-13 has a wire chart according to load and length, but you will probably get more help from Avid builders and the manuals for your engine. If you put LED bulbs in position lights, you can run a very small wire to them, probably 20 or 22 AWG, unsheilded. I dont know how particular an Inspector will be about whether the wire is "aircraft" or Autozone? Each wire should be numbered and tagged at each end - any kind of marking which you think will last is good enough.
If you use powerful (like 100 or 250 watt) landing lights, make sure your switch is rated about 5 times the amperage draw, because of the huge inrush to the bulb when you turn them on. They use a lot of juice, so.........? One builder I know used one of the Million-candlepower portable lights as his landing light - now, I see that they have 3 million cp with 2 blubs - something to consider is if they have their own battery, rechargeable, and run off of 12 volt power and set up a remote switch in cockpit for them.

Lost it for now, but somewhere in these 3 pages about your building, Doug, (I think) or someone mentioned about checking the Kitfox 4 and later for wing bracing. Just wanted to let you know that I have the manuals for the 4 and 5 and Magnum. If you have any questions, I may be able to help.
BTW: The later Kitfoxes have a much better diagonal brace setup than earlier Avid/Foxes - instead of bending the ends of the braces, they use a bracket with a small section of tube welded to it, then the brace fits the bracket. Believe they also went to steel braces instead of aluminum ones. Dont know if you can still buy the brackets, but think so. I have pictures - these could be made at home.

I will have to check my design books, but believe the standard ratio for wingspan / landing gear is 4:1, so your landing gear with 35 foot wings would have to be about 9 feet wide.

I believe the EA81 with redrive will come in at about 190 - Other Soobs will weigh A LOT MORE -
I can look up Continental weights, but C-65 to C-90 should be about 160, and the 0-200 about 8 pounds heavier, without oil. We have swapped C-65s in two planes, a Luscombe and a J3, for an O-200 and a C-90, and the change in performance was unbelievable, with little change in weight.....Sure wish you could weigh the Corvair. Maybe I can find published weights for it, but they all lie a lot in mags.

Make sure you are sitting down when you call KF - wouldnt want you to faint if the price has doubled. I bought mine a long time ago.
good building. Yes, good thinking to check out tinted skylight material before you spend money.

    TINTED SKYLIGHTS
FOR anyone thinking about putting in a darkened skylight for a sunshade, my suggestion is to get a transparent plastic that will block at least 50% of sunlight - you can still see thru it. One sure way to know what you are getting is to ask for a small sample, and look thru it and at the sun, or if you have a vendor close, check out several shades.
I've had the darkest bronze on my Ercoupe sunroof, and it really makes a difference.

Going to try to attach a photo of Avid Tips with one nav light mount riveted and glued and the other just glued on, with the white Kitfox mounts which look like they would work on an Avid wingtip. Sorry, I havent learned to resize - matter of fact, I havent learned much about putting photos on puter or much of nutten else - Just glad I can turn puter on & off !

I must have a real high metabolism - hot all the time - just cant take the heat here, although I was born here - one reason I loved Alaska so much. But my wife freezes at 70F....22C?
All summer I have this recurring dream of getting into the bird and watching the frost form on inside of windsheild...
Love winter flying. No bugs in plane or in air either.

p.s. If you cant get the fiberglass mounts from Avid, I have a set I bought from Kitfox, think about $12? Want to keep them, but can go try them on the Avid tips I have for sale which already have the mounts on them.
