The "aviation guys" are probably used to working on spam cans. Glass beading is used on aluminum. Light blasting will not hurt your 4130 steel tubes, or hide defects.
Enjoy the offer of approx $300 for blasting your fuselage - By the time you finished doing it yourself, you would give $1000 NOT to have to do it again!!(been there and done that)
Get some paint on it asap and dont handle it with bare hands before painting.
Dont use gray primer because you cant see where you have missed spots.

    Travis,
FYI: My Magnum manual has an additional insert that describes all of the maneuvers for the Aerobat. I havent read it - Guess it is available from Avid, or was?
I just try to fly from A to B, and try to keep it between the telephone poles!

    Doug,
I agree with you 100% - No one should go "into the unknown" without some kind of logic, and the kit manufacturers have surely protected themselves and reputations by being cautious and having a large safety factor, and lots of stress tests.
To add to what you said about Avid, we also have the Avid clones and mods info to look at, aka Kitfox, Magnum and Airdale, so it is easy to make comparisons on GW, structures, wings, etc.
Then, there are the Aerobatics, which most of us dont even consider because we do not do them.
A bigger factor in most cases would be hard landings or turbulance with a max load - then, we get into that old bugaboo that some like to agrue about where light wing loading is more dangerous than heavy....I dont even want to get into that discussion again.
Best thing I can say for myself is: Build it strong - Fly it well - enjoy the view.

    Brian,
I would be very cautious about chancing overheating a Soob - If the one you have is half-size, then why not look for a larger one or use 2 of what you have, Or, go to rad shop and see what they can put together for you that is the same or nearly same as your other cheek rad? Can you get the one repaired? I am wondering if there is a way to mount the VW Rabbit rad up in front, since I know it works. Lots of unknowns and aw-shits when it comes to cooling.

Part of the cooling equation is thickness and fin density - dont think most heater cores compare with rads. Watch your temp gage.
My books say you dont need the one inch or larger auto hoses - AN fittings or about 3/4 inch are enough.

    O-100 engine on Ebay
Just spotted a McCulloch (sp?) 0-100 4 cyl, TWO cycle, air-cooled, drone engine on ebay for $600.
I know these were put in some ultralights.
Seller says 70 pounds, 72 hp - no info on what rpm it runs, or if parts are available.
Anyone know anything about this engine? Looks like it could be a good match for a light Avid or Kitfox?

edit: Sure got this wrong - its a 2-stroke, and no redrive. corrected above where I thought it was 4 cycle.

  9. EDMO added a post in a topic One of my boys and my C build.

If I was 50 or more years younger, I would really be looking for developments in the Electric motors and batteries for the plane - Well, if I was that young, I would probably be looking at some plastic bird too.......not something built like a 1930's Taylor/Piper.
What's wrong with an antique "airplane engine" to go with the antique tube & fabric? They are lighter than a Corvair or Soob, VW with redrives.
And now you can get modern electronic ignition that is more dependable than the old mags.

As soon as the welding is finished on mine, it will go for "light sandblasting", and within 24 hours be sprayed with self-etching primer followed by 2-part epoxy finish coat. I could do this myself, but it is a bitch to do at home.
The aluminum elevator tube should not be sandblasted. And, never use aluminum-oxide to blast aluminum, but it is OK on steel, but more expensive than using the Play Sand from Lowes with the rocks screened out of it. You can save money by putting a cheap tarp on the ground and recylcling the sand. a little hand-sanding is OK too - I would not use the wire wheel.

P.S. You are homebuilding - Dont think there are FAA standards for anything you do - But good to go by AC43-13 standards, and AN hardware. The FAA didnt certify "kitchen pots" for firewall parts, but the stainless ones work, and are "airworthy", and that is all you are concerned about. (airworthy and SAFE)!!!!
ONE LAST COMMENT: SODA-BLASTING is usually done with water - That is good for aluminum - BUT WATER MAKES STEEL RUST !!!!!!!

I still have it - and I have a DVD now that is supposed to give the plans, but dont know if the dvd plans are Avid or Kitfox clone - I havent looked at it.
Really hope you are close enough to help me scrounge for all the parts - I think I have enough for 2 1/2 planes, but am building one.
Will work with you on this, and we can correspond thru personal message system on here. I am not good at puters, and dont think I have email currently. I also have the builders manual for the Kitfox One, and can copy it for you, or include it with kit.

P.S. Wife would be happy if I get rid of some stuff too!

    Randy,
Dave Johnson who made the "Reductions" conversions told me that the belt would go 500 hours, and one guy had over 500 on his with almost no wear. Main thing to look for is cracks in the outer cover. He didnt use Gates. I have the name of the maker.
I dont even look at Eggenfeldner - but that is my bias. Ram or RFI and some other are better sources IMO. (and cheaper than Stratus). Dave died, and there is no Reductions company now.
There is a company that makes VW with Redrives - it was in SA or Kitplanes a while back.

Let me know how you come out - I have OReilly and a Rad shop real close to me. I think I have some figures on rad cooling area that might help sometime. Right now I have a belly-mount VW Rabbit rad that did well on a Pelican with a cooling tunnel built into the cowling - but always have the thought of Cheek rads on my mind.

That would be great if the one set had a clevis, or threads - just has a hole in the shaft - came off of a Pitts - no problem to make lower tabs a bit taller for the other set. It would sure be nice if Matco would put model numbers on their MCs and Calipers.

    Randy,
Wheh you raised your roof, did you also raise the head-banger tubes? Mine went up about 6 inches, and bowed them another 3 inches up - wish I had bowed them more, and I am only 5-8, but my seats set higher than yours. Thinking of getting those foam pipe-insulation tubes to cover my tubes with, or those pretty colored foam tubes the kids play in the pool with, and cover them with vinyl or fabric and close with velcro -
"Amateur-Building" is so much fun - we can do any foolish thing we can dream up and call it "inventing or engineering"!!!
Gonna make new turtledeck out of flat sheets of colored Lexan and corners of aluminum, all bolted together, or get out the heat gun and start bending plastic.
    ED in MO
P.S. The guy who landed my original KF1 in a tree got 165 stitches in his head where he bent and broke the head-banger tubes -
So much for those car-type shoulder belts - I am using the double-shoulder belts now.

  21. EDMO added a post in a topic GOOD SETUP FOR MC-4 TABS?

I see what you mean by "opposite" - your left looks like my right. You would still have the same problem as mine if you point the lower tabs forward - it would hit the forward tube - I Like your pedals - thinking of taking lazy way out and just rivet sheet to my tube pedals. My two pair of MC-4s are different - one set is 3/8 inch longer than other, so got to put different height tabs on to make pedals same angle - no problem with that - someone, someday, will wonder why........

I'm sure you will catch hell over the VW with all the snowmachine drivers. I see nothing wrong with it if you get a well-made engine. Some rebuilds on the market are crap and others seem to be good. Just do your homework before buying.
LOTS cheaper than those 1930's designed "aircraft engines" with the failing mags and needing 2 spark plugs to light the fire, IMO.
    ED in MO
ONE LAST THOUGHT ADDED: You can use a bigger prop and have more power with a VW WITH REDRIVE.
But dont expect, in either case, to have the performance that the Rotax Drivers get.

Yes, dont say airplane - Tell them it is a heater core for your Massey Harris or Massey Ferguson tractor - if he is under 60 years old, he wont know what you are talking about!
