I added 6 inches forward of VS and brought the tube forward like this one - added 6 inches to rudder and made it 54 inches tall, 6 inches forward on HS, and 6 inches back on elevators - Mounted HS to tubes sticking out of VS like Piper and Maule. Lots more there to comp for Soob. Praying my EW dont get too high...but long flat runways here - not like your pothole flying.

Hope someday to post a photo of mine - rudder overlaps VS like Piper J3, VS extended to one bay behind TD, and blended better - this one looks flat - and elevators have outside corners extended in triangle to front of HS. All to be balanced. No, not seen that plane.

Suggest you make a temporary jig to fit your fuselage bottom longerons - either metal or 2x4s and plywood - but make it so it stretches out but stays in alignment for the amount of stretch you are using.
I am not stretching mine for the EA-81 Soob, but extended leading edges 4 inches, and added a LOT of TAIL.
So, I guess I have stretched mine by about 10 inches. But its a nose dragger.

I realize that the draft has ended - but I am "Old School of Thought" - I believe that one of the qualifications for a person to be the leader of a country should be "fulfilling military obliglations" - or at least going thru basic training and a year of military service. That alone does not make a good leader, but it sure might help!
Dont blame me if that wimp gets re-elected! And what do you call a person who steals money from my Medicare and the U.S. (OUR) Treasury?

I didnt realize how nice it was in Alaska until I moved back to Missouri. I went to AMT school with one of the FAA engineers. Alaska was so easy to get field approvals - And, just ask Atlee Dodge about STC approvals there.
I am told that here you couldnt possibly get a field approval - Since "They Just Do NOT Give Them!"
I'm sure that I will have to get a DAR.

Your finished fabric will lay better and look better if you use the same size tubes.
However, my forward tubes are larger than the original, and I can live with the mismatch because I wanted more strength in the landing gear area - mine is not stretched, just was damaged.

    912 FWF WEIGHT?
It was posted that the FWF weight of a 582 complete is about 153 lbs. I asked at that post about the FWF weight of the 912, but never got an answer. Can anyone give a guestimate including all components?

    WING FOLD CLEARENCE?
    Doug,
IN SOME OF YOUR COMMENTS EARLIER - Regarding adding capstrips to clear the wing tank - You said that adding too much at the rear would cause "wing fold interference" - can you explain this?
I thought that when the wings were folded, the root rib capstrip just butted against the rear crossover tube. I have seen where a notch was cut in the capstrip to complete folding - but nothing on the height or thickness of the capstrip interferring. Have I missed something?

    Thanks again for the explanation,
I had totally overlooked what should have been the obvious.
I can see the improvement in your setup.

If you are out of 9460, I would at least go with some kind of epoxy - not familiar with G glue. T-88 is good.
But, for blending the ends, 9460 with some flox is best, IMO.

    Thanks Mike,
Since I am a long-time Kitfox builder, and know very little about Avids, can you tell me about the 2 piece brake pedals you are referring to - I may have seen them in the photos, but that tells me little.
My Kitfoxes have all had what I thought was 2 piece pedals - a welded double upright, and 2 pivoting foot pedals, and another set of the same. The KF5 had a totally different setup.
So, where am I missing the message here?

    Mike,
Please elaborate about the "maligned internal caliper w62". I had not heard any thing about them.
I have a set of 6" - w60 or w600? - 3 piece Matcos, internal calipers, I am planning to use with 600 tires - Look like w62s, and 1420 lbs static. What can I expect with MC-4Ds, and is there a problem with the calipers?
    Thanks,

This has been done on some factory-built planes - I think the aluminum could be lighter, maybe .030 or .025.
My favorite attachment would be aluminum riv-nuts, with a washer or aluminum strip under the capstrip.
Havent had much time to think about this - Just figured on cutting fabric and repairing if need be, but mine is not covered with plywood.
But since you have to cut yours anyway, this might be the time for a modification that could help you in the future.
I would like to hear others thoughts on this - for or against, and why.

Since the added material over the original capstrips is not "structural" and only to ensure that the fabric clears the tank, I think the plain wood strips that Spruce sells would be fine. I had some veneer plywood left over from my kitchen, so I cut some one inch strips from that and used it. Anything cheap and easy should work - as long as glue will stick the fabric to it. Blend it into the original at front and behind the rear spar so you do not change the trailing edge.

You can do whatever it takes to make you happy - Dont think it will affect the performance or looks.
BUT, I would make both wings the same.

I had the same problem with my tanks - I just used 9460 to glue on another cap strip from front spar to just behind the rear spar on top of the original on each side of the tanks, and then blended the ends with 9460 to match profile.

    QUESTIONS FOR JOEY:
    1. TO weight of your plane, and what is ground run at what Low altitude, standard 59F temp?
    2. Ground run at 5K, 8K, or what ever highest field you would go into?
    3. Same 2Q above at 70F, 80F, 90F?
    4. Rates of climb? Thought maybe you have all this figured out - dont mean to be a nuisnance.
Just thought it might be nice to show the difference to some of us flatlanders.
    Thanks,

    Thanks Darcy,
Was real curious about attaching magnet to spar - Dont like holes in top or bottom of spar - could use a clamp around spar and some sort of attachment.
I would only use them on the ground, or for some other purpose - got me to thinking about other possibilities for magnets.

  23. EDMO added a post in a topic D#@& Isocyanates !

Now, I am just an old country boy who stood with a flag while the crop dusters sprayed agent-orange on the cotton - worked in a machine shop and ground asbestos brake shoes without protection - washed glue off of hands and arms with MEK - and many other dumb things - and I missed all the chemistry courses in HS and college. Worked in weld shop and fiberglas for 30 years and got cancer 3 times!
I used an epoxy floor covering on my garage made by Quickcrete - real tough stuff.
Dont know if you could spray it - how about a slow job of brushing it on? Or some other 2-part epoxy? There are lots of epoxies available, but I have no knowledge of what chemicals they contain - probably none good!
I survived Stewarts, but if you are alergic to it - how about somebody else spraying it? BUT, it is not cheap either!
My 2c worth - probably not worth either of them.

You should have gotten the right size to fit the pitot - probably same price from ACE or Lowes or HD, but use whatever works - you can use hose clamps too, and slip-on tube fitting at airspeed indicator.

  25. EDMO added a post in a topic painting my Avid

    Bill,
I prefer a big air compressor, which you can use for many things. We had a Binks (high dollar) HVLP gun borrowed, and also a cheap - $12 - Harbor Freight HVLP gun. We tried both guns, and the cheap one did just as good as the Binks. Both had the cup on the top - gravity feed. Got a beautiful job on a J3.
Oh yes, we were using the Stewart system this time, but have tried this with dope - same results - Just got to get the pressure and mix adjusted correctly - use a small pressure regulator attached to the gun, and set it with the trigger pulled - Yes, HVLP is better than the old way - but you can do it fine with a compressor and HVLP gun.
waste some paint on a small part, like a rudder until you are satisfied with your settup. If you dont have a rudder to do - grab some boards and glue some fabric and shrink it and test drive that.
    Hope this helps.
