While on the topic of lexan, I would sure like some input on how to make windows that don't crack out. I have tried .093, .060, in both standard and chemical resistant varieties. I've melted the rivet holes with a soldering iron, drilled them with a special plastics drill, and my last attempt used oversize holes (melted with soldering iron) and screws with rubber washers under the heads. So far, it has been a frustrating annual replacement chore. Windshields last a little better, but still not great.

Dug into the problem a bit, and discovered the cable was a bit sticky, and wasn't always allowing the lever to return to zero. Retested, and now it is running about 85-90:1 Is this ok or do I need to try and increase the oil flow?

    582 oil pump adjustment
Wondering if someone has had any experience with an over-dosing oil injector? As best i can tell, I 'm running about 35-40:1. (Plugs look ok but I've noticed burning oil smell on decent and am concerned about carbon build up.) When I bought the plane, it was running about 50:1, but I see posts from others claiming to measure 50, 70 and 120:1 usage rate. As far as I can tell, rotax is silent on what constitutes an acceptable range. It seems everyone is against pre-mixing, but no-body seems to be concerned about monitoring their oil usage. Do you guys have any suggestions? Is there a significant down side to pre-mixing, and if I was to pre-mix, what ratio would be appropriate?

I had trouble with my charging system a while back and found I had burned up my VR. While researching the problem I found that these charging systems need a constant load or they have trouble. As far as your symptoms, don't you have to have a working VR to excite the alternator?

Might Want to check out the following site http://www.supercub.org/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=842 Was doing some late night web surfing recently and stumbled across this. Can't for the life of me find where I read a report of the performance characteristics, but if I remember correctly it was +10mph on cruise and 20mph stall. Was interesting in that the guy had to use GPS to figure the stall speed since the airspeed indicator had gone to zero. If you are interested and do a little digging or just call the guy up, could probably get the full scoop. The pictures below came off that site.

I added vg's to my KF 3 at the 10% location and like suberavid, found they really helped aileron control.. especially with full flaps. I also put them on the under side of the tail, and that seemed to give better flare authority. Unfortunately, I made a few other mods at the same time I put them on, so I can't be sure how they affected cruise, but it seems like they had little effect.

  10. 6320012s added a post in a topic Passenger Seat Mod for baggage hauling and better Passenger Comfort

I'm not really familiar with the avid seats. My original kitfox seat had a fiberglass 2 place seat with an upholstered two seat cushion. I know early avids had a sling style seat that tied to the frame tubes which served as the inspiration for this design. With my modification, I cut the cushion in two and added a pocket to hold extra foam for the pilot. I also cut the fiberglass seat in half and discarded the passenger piece. The passenger seat sits on a net made of 1" nylon webbing and uses some custom fabricated metal hooks to attach to the cross tubes. I believe the hooks are made of 1/2 by 3/32 bar stock. Underneath the passenger seat is an aluminum pan to contain misc loose stuff like plugs etc. connected to the sides of that pan are the fabric walls of the baggage sack. To my mind, this mod allows the best of both worlds by allowing large packages to be carried and secured as well as a reasonably comfortable passenger seat. This mod allows easy access to behind the seat. My next project is to build a baggage compartment behind the seat.

Passenger Seat Mod for baggage hauling and better Passenger Comfort
I frequently fly for business purposes where I need to carry odd materials, tools and supplies. After several flights with questionably secure baggage, we installed the pictured modification. This modification allowed for more secure baggage, and as well (due to extra foam on the bottom and back of the pilot's seat) allowed pilot and passenger shoulders to be staggered vertically and front to back. For me, this puts the top of my head just below the lexan offering a better over the nose view. When I get around to it , I'd like to build in a baggage compartment accessed through the passenger seat back.

From experience, I would suggest you consider modifying the cylinder attach point so cross control on taxi and landing is not an issue. See post titled "pedal flaw enhances groundloop potential". Good luck.

Rudder Pedal Flaw Enhances Groundloop Potential
When I was learning tailwheel, I had several groundloop experiences first traced to a faulty tailwheel lock, a blown tire, and finally a quartering tailwind. In each case, I tried to counter the initiation of the groundloop with increasingly hard rudder, and in each case, as I increased rudder pressure, the swing intensified instead of correcting. Being kind of slow, and the fact that the ground loops happened pretty fast, it took until the third time to understand that the brake pedal design was partly, if not largely to blame. The flaw of the design is that as one pedal is pushed, the opposite brake pedal is potentially pushed into the opposite foot, causing braking in the opposite direction from the control input. As aerodynamic control decreases, the potential for cross control from the inadvertent braking is increased. To eliminate this potential, the cylinder must be mounted to the floor instead of the cross tube, and the cross tubes have to be raised about 1/2 inch with spacers. The pictures show how the brake pedal moves out of the way of the opposing foot when hard rudder input is given. An additional benefit is that as slight brake input is automatic with full rudder input. To get the correct pedal position, some "experimental" wooden dowel was used. The next generation of the pedal will be built for proper pedal position. With this setup, I have been able to consistently land on pavement without any problem..... and I always check the tail wheel lock!!

  14. 6320012s added a post in a topic A heater core that WORKS!

In a previous life I was a plastic injection mold maker, so still have a pretty decent shop, including a cnc mill. If I thought there was a market for the heater adapter, I might consider making a run. Don't have a lot of time for outside projects, but I'm alsways up for helping somebody do their own, and since I've got my bird in the shop right now, would like your opinion on a few issues.

    A heater core that WORKS!
Have seen some discussion on the forum about heaters and thought I'd share my experience. The heater core in the pictures was installed when I bought the plane, but I quickly found it was mostly useless. So to fix the problem, I machined up a spacer to put the thermostat out far enough to take the heater hose off the engine side. Now the only drawback to it is that the computer fan doesn't move enough air. I need a good squirrel cage fan. I haven't flown in really cold weather with it yet, but when it was about zero F on the ground, I was able to fly without gloves. ( about 40-50 F depending on where in the cabin you measure)
    Hope somebody finds this useful.

  16. 6320012s added a post in a topic That hits the Spot

I've had one long enough for it to be an "old" model, and it has worked pretty good for me. My wife likes to see where I'm at, and I like to have a little insurance. The only down side of it is that it only reports position every 5-10 minutes, and sometimes it will miss the connection for several transmissions. I have never tried to call for help with it, but by looking at my track, I'm pretty sure it would do the trick. Worst case, it might take 15-20 minutes to transmit the call. I've used it on some backpacking trips in the mountains, and even in those conditions it has performed surprisingly well. That said, it's my understanding that if it cant see a satellite, it will have to wait till it finds one.

    Bob,
Been thinking a lot about what could possibly make your bird so much faster than mine and anybody else I have heard of for that matter. I know you think it is the prop, but I am wondering if the cuff has something to do with it, and if your CG isn't typically farther forward than most since you have the clutch and your header tank on the firewall. Have you noticed much reduction in speed when you load your rear bagage compartment? It just seems the rest of us may be adding drag when we trim for neutral cruise. Also, I can't remember, do you have droop tips?

If you mean the 16th, that would be great. I plan to be in town that weekend. I'd love to pick your brain on the arctic sparrow mixture control. Once I got it set up right, Ive never had any trouble controlling EGT in both seasons. If you are around during lunch time, I'll buy.

I've got a little heater core and fan in my kitfox that was installed by the previous owner. It didn't work for beans at first because it was just in series with the external radiator. To improve the situation, I machined an adapter that moved the thermostat out from the block about an inch and allowed room for a hose connection on the engine side of the thermostat. That mod in combination with some good weather stripping on the doors, and I'm nice and toasty.....well at least well above freezing. If I wanted to make it better, I cold get a bigger heater core, the the current setup has been adequate.

Once you follow akflyer's advice, you might want to consider in flight adjustable mixture control. My kitfox was set up with them when I bought it, and once I got it dialed in, it has been very nice. No need to change jets with the seasons.

I spun the tire on the rim once but for me it cost me a prop as well as the humiliation. I have heard of old bush pilots putting short screws through the rim into the bead to keep them from spinning. I've put my pressure up to 12 psi to keep it from happening again, but much prefer the softer landings. I plan to experiment with the screws next time I have the tires off.

I put mine on with a bead of liquid nails and made my own wing attatchment farings and used the aluminimum that came with for the fuselage attatch fairing. Haven't gotten around to painting yet, and I am not sure what they did for air speed. I put on VG's at the same time, so I'm not sure what the individual impact of the faring was.

Thanks for the good info. Unfortunately, John sold the skis to one of you guys and I haven't gotten any since. 166N has been my learning Airplane, so as you can see, it has new landing gear and a some abrasions on the wing tips. A couple props later, my nerves of steel instructor and I got it figured out and have been doing ok. So yes, its about time to graduate to skis, but am a bit short on time to build a set. with 6" matco wheels, how do you mount the brake rotor? I'm a little shy of the 2K price tag for bush wheels though so are there any cheap alternatives for the 6" wheels letting me graduate up a little later? I think I'd rather put 2k into an IFA prop. Would love to join you all at a flyin if time and opportunity arises.

    Tundra tires
I am getting to the point that I need a new set of tires, and would like to replace with the biggest I can get. What I have are 22x9x8 atv tires with the nubs ground off. I've seen the $100 21x12x8 pair on ebay but would like to get closer to 30" if I could. Does anybody have any experience with tires of such size on a KF? I don't have time to do a big mod job, so would like to stick with the 8" rims. Any pointers?
