    Today's Dumbass Stunt
Okay-- I did a good one today that may be of value to you guys...

Went to the airport, today. Rolled the ladder up to the wing and put one of my 5-gallon cans of fuel in the wing tank. Drained the sumps, walked down to shoot the bull with a couple of the hang-arounders for a couple of minutes, then fired up and went flying.

Shortly after leaving the pattern I switched to the local "porkchop channel" that we use to BS. One of the chapter guys about 30 miles away talked with me while I flew the short 10 miles to a local grass strip. I did a touch and go there and started to fly away to do a big circle around back to the airport.

All of a sudden off my wingtip is a "Short-wing-Piper-deathtrap" belonging to one of the guys I was talking to before I left the airport. I switched frequencies back to the unicom and called him up. He said very tersely that I needed to return to the airport ASAP. Okay, I said to myself. I turned inbound for the long 10 mile trip back to the airport, not knowing what to expect.

Well-- I come to find out that one of the guys found a red fuel cap on the ground in front of my hangar. Yup, mine. The cap did not get put back on the right tank after I sumped the tanks and gascolator (I pour the gas back in the tank through the filler).

Lesson: I was very lucky. I lost very little gas out of my tank. One of my chapter mates wound up putting his Kitfox in a hay field because of this same mistake. The tanks on Avids and Kitfoxes will siphon themselves out very quickly if uncovered or if the vent is not pressurized. I don't know why mine didn't. Someone was looking out for me today.

I need a good kick in the ass for this stupid stunt.

  5. Av8r3400 added a post in a topic Differences between a 3.47 and 2.62 E-box

    Isn't Leni running a 72" IVO prop with a 3:1 box?

With a 3.47 and a 70", it may almost turn a little too slow for optimum, or maybe not. Try it, there doesn't seem to be a huge deal with changing ratios.

There's a Skyraider and a Ridgerunner in my EAA Chapter. Pretty neat little planes in their own right.

From what I've read toe-in is generally considered bad. Toe out is better.

If you land on one main with toe in, it will want to try to flip the plane over or at least exaggerate the situation. With toe out it will try to straighten the plane out.

The pipe and bend method seems to be the way, as crude as it sounds...

For me, every time I open the browser (Firefox), I need to re-log in. If I leave the browser open, I stay logged in.

The "view new content" button works fine for me.

    WIndy...
Well, not traumatic and all turned out okay in the end, but:

My sister was in from California for the Packer Game (a different traumatic story... ) this weekend. Monday after the game I was showing off the little plane and after seeing it, she wanted a short ride in the Kitfox.

Winds were 20 gusting to 35 out of 029. The runway is 25, so not so bad. We departed and were off the ground before we got past the numbers on the runway (maybe 150' ground roll!). The flight was bumpy but not too bad over all. Flew over the house and observed some of the scenery. Nice.

Landing was a bit of a challenge with the wind not staying from a constant direction or at a constant speed, so I hedged my bet and lined up on the parallel grass runway. I did a straight in, 1-1/2 mile final and chopped an bounced pretty well most of the way in. I went with no flaps and carried a little power over the threshold. The landing turned into a complete non event and I greased it smooth as silk. My sister said it was an awesome ride and had lots of fun. Little did she know I was pretty white knuckled on that landing and a little jittery afterwords...

Lesson: I think I did well, though it was more extreme than I should have tried. The conditions were on the ragged edge of my capabilities. The plane handled it fine, but I realized that I shouldn't try to match the plane's capabilities, yet. This was a good lesson and I did well, but it didn't need to happen.

Okay, this isn't a harrowing Alaska story of death, carnage and rabid grizzly bears, but maybe a little more mundane "lower 48" lesson that can serve a point to someone.

Leni's going to have to look into the picture posting issue. There must be a check-box or something somewhere that allows members to post pictures that isn't checked...

Okay, tried a second time to upload a couple of less than 50KB photos. I get the message "This upload failed".

    I'm just a failure.

    Experimental!
So these Kitfoxes are experimental, Right??!!

Well here is my latest experiment. Yellow, matching "Racing Tape" gap seals on the elevator. Watcha think? Used a lot more flap on landing and still could flair.

    (crappy phone photos, sorry)

Okay, what's the secret to upload photos??

Okay, I thought maybe it was a setting on my work computer, but the same at home, too.

Each time I use my link to the page from somewhere else on the net, I need to log in again. Firefox is set to remember the password and the setting on the log-on page is to "remember me". My logon and password are already populated in the logon page, but I still need to click the log in button.

    Hmmmm.

No clue what that *WAS* but I'm glad it's dead (or should be).  What Leni said about that beauty dropping in your lap on a short final with squirrelly winds.
