Ed, mine are made of 4130 steel so I would guess that the Magnum is the same. they are real easy to make from scratch.

sure  wish I could make it up there this weekend with you guys but I have to work. I took the Stinson in to JC a couple days ago for the first time. it was Great! they did have the water sprinklers out so be aware but they are well marked with orange cones so we just landed off to the side with no issues. its only an hour flight for me so I will definitely be going in later this summer when the Avid is up. hope you all have a great time just keep the shiny side up

Randy thanks for the heads up I have made sure that the cables are going to the correct side. that sure could  make for a bad day in a hurry if they were backwards. I have a hybrid HH Speedwing. Its built to all the heavy hauler specs including 12' .083 spars 12" rib spacing but I used speed wing ribs from #5 out. #1 and #4 are both the transitional root ribs and 2-3 were omitted to make room for the heavy hauler fuel tanks then it just has false rib cap strips to make the bottom of the fuel tanks flat to match the rest of the wing. its sitting down at KMAN about 1.5 hr drive from me at the moment until the inspection and 40hr fly off before I can bring it home (can't fly over the mtns for the first 40) still hoping to be flying this month.

I also chose to go with the EarthX battery. haven't had a chance to test it yet but is supposed to be great for these engines and weighs less than a pound. price was very reasonable compared to others as well. also their customer service is awesome. just my .02 cents

I know its a long shot but if you can get a hold of Brett and not be in a hurry he has a source for the spar material. I got mine from him a couple years ago but it did take a while for me to get them. might be worse now but worth a shot.

Ed: I will be transporting it with the wings closed. I live less than 1 mile from the airport so don't have to go far.

Leni: I currently have the 3/4" struts so I'm not to worried about faring them just want to get in the air at this point. I planning to replace them soon with the bigger struts and will fair them then.

Vance, the plane looks great glad to hear you got the bugs worked out with no major problems. I see you have the Mk IV cowl do you have the larger IV tail as well? If so its pretty easy to add a trim tab that would help a bit. also where is your battery located? you might try moving some of the already had items aft if possible just to move the CG back. I chose not to go with electric start on our project just to keep the weight down and keep it rearward. Not sure what you're running for a tail wheel either but if its small and light you could go to a bigger heavier one. I went with a two leaf spring and matco 8" wide tail wheel its great for off asphalt opps and adds a little bit of weight as far back as you can get. just as well have your counter balance weight be useful weight I figure. I'm sure others will chime in with better ideas as well. good luck

We got the brakes and tires mounted up last night! really happy with the stance it has now. My wife did say "those tires look small with that gear" I heard " lets get bigger tires" but the budget says no. I'm going to start taking the porch apart tomorrow to get it off . will have the tail and wings on by Saturday and its headed for the airport Sunday afternoon to be completed there. I asked my wife for a picture to see the relative height and Scout thought he should be in there to.

[edit] the new gear sits 72 1/2" inside to inside and 8' outside. I don't think its quite as high as Bretts though but should be good for my wife to learn ground handling with. at least she can almost see over the cowl.

Thanks guys, I gotta say if it weren't for many of you I would have been flying a year ago but due to you're suggestions and other things I've read here I've decided to make so many changes that we're still building. but we are going to be much happier with the final product and I can say for sure we will have a one of a kind bird and possibly one of the nicest model b-c avids in the air. other than the cowl (and were already working on changing that) everything has been upgraded to Mk IV or better. many of the changes include custom heavy hauler speed wing with dual 14 gal wing tanks, Mk IV rudder and elevator with electric trim, dorsal fin and misc gussets added to fuse, fat avid style flapperon controls located under the left seat opening up the entire aft cargo area, modified ridge runner wide bungee gear sits 10" wider than Bretts gear with cross tube on cabane to add structural integrity to the fuse, Nanco 21x12x8 tires, Matco 8" wide single arm tailwheel mounted on two leaf spring, Matco hydraulic brakes with pkg brake valve, carbon fiber instrument panel, basic but full. probably something else that I'm not thinking of right now. over all we are very happy with the results and can't wait to be in the air.

If by custom you mean ugly old original side by side with the horribly uneven seam running down the center line then yes its custom. in all seriousness no its just the factory cowl without the side radiator cutout and the lower part cut away to make room for the exhaust and front spark plug I did about as little extra work as I could to make it look decent and just work for now. I'm planning to change it at some point to either the mk IV cowl or I found one very similar to the KF Vixon cowl that I really like. I just had this one and am to the point that I just want to be flying so these changes can wait till later. other than the cowl I've done all the MK IV changes that I know of... and then some.

  18. High Country added a post in a topic Mounting original aluminum header tank

Thanks Doug, that would be the tab I don't have. Is that your outlet pointing diagonally towards the side? I thought it should point straight to the front? maybe its not as critical as I thought. any other pics of attaching it without the factory mounting tabs welded in? I'm thinking of using hose clamps somehow

    Mounting original aluminum header tank
I'm ready to mount in my original spar tube aluminum header tank behind the seat but am not quite sure how others have done it. there are two tabs welded on the side that I assume are for mounting but my airframe doesn't have anything to attach them to. I originally only had the small nose tank. If i use adel clamps then it turns the out on the bottom to face the wrong direction. I was hoping for some pics of how others have mounted it. also what size should I drill/ tap the holes for the fittings to screw in to.

My book shows the straw going in through the bottom but there is no hole anywhere so I guess it could possibly go either way   is there a better tank I should be looking for to be more reliable, I sure don't want to be getting any air in the system. I will be adding some sound deadening material at some point in the future just trying to get the papers signed off at this point so I can fly it. was thinking of adding the material to the engine side and possibly some in the foot wells of the inside to keep the heat from the exhaust out. these ones will be removable for added heat in the winter.

  21. High Country added a post in a topic Looking for info on landing gear options

the "V" is higher. I used one of Bretts cabanes as a pattern just added the 1/2" cross tube. I'm just trying to get this thing flying at this point. but am planning to fab up a completely new gear and will make it a bit stronger, have it sweep forward and change some of the angles for better geometry. but for the time being I think this gear is going to work out well. I'm happy with it so far. If someone already has one of Bretts gears and wanted to convert it to the bungees it would be a piece of cake to fab up the bungee struts and just unbolt the original spring struts and replace them.

not to steal this thread but i'm in the process of mounting my inverted 532 on a C model. could you put up some FWF pics of your install, I'm still looking for ideas on how others have done it.

  24. High Country added a post in a topic best battery for NO electric start

got my new Earth X battery this past week and now I have it all mounted. this thing is tiny!! and less than a pound!! I made an aluminum box and mounted it on the cockpit side of the firewall keeping the weight in the center and as far back as I could by still keeping the wire runs as short as possible. Let me know what you guys think or if I should change anything...goes for the rest of my FWF project so far. I'm trying to keep it all as clean as possible but if there is anything I should do differently I want to know about it now.

Leni, Earth X has $5.99 flat rate shipping anywhere that would be pretty hard to beat
