  2. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Kitfox Highwing gear on an Avid???

What do you think caused the damage?  Did the springs bottom out?   Do you think it was a weaker set up than the stock bungee gear over all?  I've thought it would have helped to tie the cabane to the seat truss in the center.  What are your thoughts on that?  What modification of Leni's are you referring to? Thanks,  JImChuk

Kitfox Highwing gear on an Avid???
Hi all,  I'm picking up a Highwing bush gear from someone who never used it, and was going to put it on my Avid MK IV.  Got to thinking, and reading and realized the wheels will sit further back on the Avid then they did on the Kitfox.  Has anyone used the Kitfox gear on an Avid, and if so, what are your thoughts.  Also, what has been your thoughts on the Highwing gear on what ever plane it was on.  Any bent fuselages?JImChuk

Bad enough to wreck an airplane, but imagine doing it front of every one like that.  OUCH!  JImChuk

They are golf cart tires if they are standard ones from the factory.  I would copy the name down and google it.  They are available.  JImChuk

Might want to keep the radiator Joey.  I think it will work fine on the 912 as well.... How many hours on the engine, what gear ratio in the gearbox?  Ect, ect.   After I typed this, I realized you said Kitfox FWF, not Avid.  Must not be switching the Avid to the 912 just yet.  JImChuk

The heavy hauler wing also has rib spacing of 12" on center.  That is what yours looks like.  2 short ribs between 2 long tailed ribs.  Also, both of my MK IV heavy haulers had an aluminum sheet covering the false ribs on the front top of the wing.  Maybe yours has it, and it's just not installed yet.  I don't know of any Avid MK IV that had long wings and wasn't a heavy hauler.  JImChuk

I have the engine mount as well.  The newer dyno smooth version no less.  Plus the nose radiators.  Sorry, if I'm hijacking your thread.  At any rate, if your missing some parts in the kit, they are available.  JImChuk

I saw that one listed for sale.  That's not a bad price, with the bush gear worth at least $1000 easy, that's only 4000 for the rest.  I have some Avid parts available if you get it and need something.  Also, I will be selling a couple of 582 Rotaxes as soon as they come back from the shop.  One has never ran, but has sat for quite a few years.  I would say grab it if I was you.  JImChuk

A bit more progress.  Not working 8 hr days or anything, but it seems to take me a long time these days.  At any rate, tapes are all on the fuselage.  Moved it back to the other hangar, and started the tailfeathers this evening.  Get them finished and then I will set up the spray booth.  JImChuk

That worked now.  Nice!  What is the radio you have in there?  What are your thoughts on it?  You are making a good speed for that rpm.  Tonight I was doing almost 85 at 2800rpm behind my Jabiru.  Glad your getting to fly after all the work you did.  JImChuk

That side on blocks, the wheel off, a 8' long pipe on the axle. (protect the threads, leave the nut on)  Toe in is easier to do, cause you can use a cable come a long and pull against the tailspring.  Be careful you don't go to far.  At least that's how I've done it with the standard gear.   JImChuk

The hinges for the Kitfox 4 and later rudder are heim joint bearings.  That spaces the rudder about 1 1/2" back of the verticle stabilizer.  I used high density foam to fill that gap.  You have to leave room for the bearings though, and the bolt that goes through them.  That's what the notch is for.  I think I will be keeping this one for a while.  Maybe I will sell the Avid MK IV with the Jabiru once I start flying this one.  JImChuk

Well another progress report.  It's pretty in pink!  Brushed on the poly brush, and started to put finish tapes on.  Also got a box with something to hang on the nose.  It is used, and has a bit of an ignition problem, but I think I can work through that.  Price was right.... Pics were taken today.  Maybe by the middle of the week, I'll be spraying it.  JImChuk

I guess I didn't really address the 503 question in your post.  I flew with a guy who had a 503 in his Kitfox 4 in Pensecola Fl a couple of times.  The plane was real light, 525 lbs or so, and we were pretty much at sea level, but I was surprised how well that plane performed.  I'm considering putting an HKS on my recently acquired Kitfox 3 if it comes out light enough when I have it ready to mount an engine.  There was a Tom Jones out in Wa. that had a 503 in his Kitfox 4 as well, and he flew it a lot and liked it.  JImChuk

I recently sold a 55 HP and 65 HP Hirth engines.  I will have a couple of 582s available soon.  Have them in the shop being gone through to make sure all is good.  One has never ran, and the other has been sitting for a couple of years.  New seals and complete internal inspections on both.   JImChuk

Either I'm getting slower, or I'm expecting to much from myself.  Hoped to get the rest of the fabric on yesterday, but ended up working all day today to finish the fuselage fabric.  Still have the tailfeathers to do, but progress is being made!   Babys got new clothes..... even though some of it needs to be ironed to take the wrinkles out.   Course then the real  tedious part starts, the finish tapes.  JImChuk

Thanks Paul.  That is the list I looked at a while back. Don't know why I couldn't find it now.  I did call the two guys near Duluth, neither of them does experimental aircraft.  I know some DARs work with Cirrus aircraft in Duluth.  I'll have to talk to the guy in Sauk Rapids, Mn.  JImChuk

Well this thread has been dormant for a long time, about time I updated it.  Finally started to put some clothes on this baby.  At this point, maybe we would just say underpants..... Hopefully I can do the sides and top tomorrow afternoon/evening.  The wings have been done for almost 2 years, so the plan is to get the rest of this ready to spray and paint it out.  Then as long as I have the spray booth set up, I'll spray out the Kitfox 3 I picked up a week ago.  It's a plan anyway, we'll see how much life gets in the way of that.  Weather starts to cool around here in late September, so that's a bit of a deadline for my painting.  JImChuk
