That does make it a bit clearer. The way I read your first post was that the empty plane CG needed to be within the 11.185 and 16.5" CG envelope. That of course is not the case. That was the point I was trying to make. Also, I do realize that it's important to know the empty CG, as all other CG calculations can be figured from there by knowing weight and length from datum. This kind of points out the limit or negative aspects of typing messages verses conversations. In a conversation, questions can come immediately, and false impressions get straightened out right then (hopefully) Jim

I'm not sure that it matters what your empty CG is. It wont fly without you in it (hopefully) so I would think that what really matters is forward CG with the lightest pilot and lowest amount of fuel being inside the CG envelope. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean by empty CG?.... Wing tank fuel is figured at 15" and people are at 16", so both of those move the CG back. Jim

  5. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Got your ski plane stuck? here is a great way to pull it out

Talked to a friend of mine this evening, and he said there was 4 1/2" of ice on a local lake this morning. That should hold the Avid on skis.... even without the vodka! Jim

Hey Leni, That was a good video! Never know when it might come in handy. Low tech, but very effective. We've had below zero F the last two nights here in northern Mn, so the ice is probably getting that thick around here. That is not enough to drive on! Vodka can make one brave perhaps though. Any way, thanks, Jim Chuk

Not to argue with you Joey, but here is what I've done.  I crank the engine a few revolutions without prime first of all, then prime and start it.  Here is why.  If the engine has sat for a while since it last ran, oily fuel will often fill the sparkplugs. (Pull the plugs some time and see) Those first few revolutions will hopefully blast that oily fuel out, so when I prime and go to start it, it is less likely to foul the plugs.  Jim Chuk

Here is another thought that I have used with success. I put a small washer of the right thickness under each circlip that would move the needle half the distance from one groove/notch to the next. Just wondering what your static rpm is @ full throttle? Others mentioned adding pitch and that makes sense also. Jim Chuk

I need a needle that allows me to use a middle clip option and be a bit richer than what I have now with the 15k2 on the 2nd clip.
    Or am I missing something?

I think lots of people had the factory muffler mounts break.  I know two of mine did.  If  my memory is correct, I believe John Miller's mount also broke and that is why he mounted his muffler on the firewall.  Jim

This motor mount is the dynasmooth  motor mount.   It absorbs more of the vibration from the two stroke engine then the earlier motor mounts did.  A later, better idea from Avid   Jim Chuk

How much for the fat fuselage? Is it a widened/lengthened MK IV fuselage? What would it use for mixer controls, ect?? Thanks, Jim Chuk

  13. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Hey what happened to my RPMs !

If you are sure the tac is right, pitch it so you have the rpm you want while climbing out.  I noticed the  same thing  happened with my 3 blade Warp taper tip prop.   Jim Chuk

  14. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Fuel Line time

Ed,  I wonder why you need 5/16" line.  I've used 1/4" on all the Avids I've had, never ran short of fuel.  Even the Jabiru with gravity feed was fine.  I have had the 1/4" aluminum tubes pointing forward on the gas caps on the last two Avids, and I'm sure that helps some.  JIm

Hey I like the way you did it better than the way I did.  Had an oil line blow 2 years ago, and landed in a to short field.  Made the news that night..... Hopefully I can finish the rebuild this winter.  Jim

Put a valve in the vent line.  after you vent the air out of the header, the vent is not needed.  I think most Avids had a tube sticking up through the butt rib on the right side.  (both my MK IVs did)  I had some problem with fuel siphoning out till I put a valve in the line.  Jim

  17. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic New member looking at a Avid Model B

I think lots of guys have flown their B models at heavier than 911 lb.  John Miller who is on the "other" Avid site has 4000 hrs on his B avid and flys it at 1050.  The wing and fuselage was tested to 5.7 Gs with no problem or deformation by the factory.  To change the weight legally, you need to put the plane back into phase 1 and fly it and test it at the higher gross weight.  Should get FAA aproval for it first.  Call you local FSDO and talk to them. Jim Chuk Just punched some numbers into the calculator, and 4.9 Gs at 1050 lbs would be just a little less load than the factory put on their wing shown in the picture.  911 X 5.7 = 5192    1050 X 4.9 = 5145

  18. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Avid A wings on a KF 3???

Just a heads up, the gross weight of an Avid A was around 760 lbs. The B was listed at 911 lb.   Not sure if the wings were the limiting factor on that though.  The strut attachments are different from the Kitfox to the Avid as well.  Jim

I have a MK IV cowl that was to be used with a 912.  Here are pics of it.  I bought it to go on my Kitfox 4 project.  Maybe some day I can get back to working on it.  Don't know how the radiator mounted though.  Jim

When you say the incidence is different, would one have to mount the Avid horizontal stab. at a different angle to ovecome this?? Thanks, Jim

  21. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Kitfox wings on an Avid

What got me thinking about this is I need to rebuild some Avid wings. There are a couple of Kitfox 3 wings for sale for what I think is a resonable price. I know someone recently posted a message explaining what was different about the wings. I knew about the difference in the lift struts, but there was something else mentioned and thats what I'm trying to find out. I think it was the incidence of the wings, but I'm not sure. Jim

Ed,  I was talking about the early wings  Model 1 to 3.  I had thought they were the same also, but someone had posted and told about the differences.  I'm trying to find that post.  Thanks,  Jim

I've made my own with the spruce cord several times.  92" I believe loop to loop.  Cost about $25 for a set.  I've just wrapped safty wire on the loop ends.  2 wraps, twist the wire a few time, then a few more wraps of the wire pulling it tight.  Twist the ends a few more times, bend them ends over and then wrap it in electricians tape to keep the wire ends from cutting things.  Jim

Not sure I'm on the right track but maybe leaking seals?  Did you try to pull the choke or pump the primer to see if the revs go up?  This is the first thing that popped into my head, so take it with a grain of salt.  By the way,  what do the plugs look like after this taxeing?  Black= rich   white or gray= lean.  Just when I'm about to hit the send button, I think of something else to say.....  Are you sure your tack is accurate?  Jim

    Kitfox wings on an Avid
A while back, there was a discussion about using Kitfox wings on an Avid. Someone mentioned why it would cause problems. I think it had to do with the incidence of the wings. I tried to find the post that talked about it, but couldn't. Maybe it was even on another site. Any remember it? Thanks, Jim
