Here is a chart that shows icing danger in different temps and humidity.  It's not just cooler temps where is can be a problem,  Much has to do with the amount of moisture in the air.  Warm air can hold far more moisture than cold air.  JImChuk

I doubt that any of my 4 Avids flew at a CG of 15" or more.  Usually probably around 13".   None had a heavy engine in front, but they all flew fine.  Maybe you're trying fix a problem that doesn't really exist.  Have you flown the plane at a more forward CG and don't like it?  :-)   JImChuk

I was able to see my wing tank fuel levels quite easy, and I have the same amount of stuff as you.  I would maybe tie the pitot tube to the side of the steel tube, rather than the bottom though.   I went looking for some pictures, and found this utube video showing the tank about 10-12 seconds in.  You could see the level down to 4 gallons real easy.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3dxYaxQHDY  In the second video, you can see the other side of the plane at 40-45 second mark.  JImChuk

The negative thing I see about the 2 1/2 gallon fuel cell is this.  You will never use the fuel in it most likely, so you are carrying around 15 lbs of weight.   (would you ever take off with the low fuel light showing?)  Adding just a few lbs of weight on the tail will move the CG back, you would have to figure out how much you need though.  The idea of a low fuel warning light is a good idea though.  Wish I had one several times.  Some have rigged them up in the top of the Avid header tank. I'm sure it's been discussed here in the past.  Not sure where it is though.  Thanks for the post, maybe I will get around to doing the low fuel light because of it.  JImChuk

Anyone with an Avid or Kitfox near Gulf Shores, Al ?
Hi all,  I'm down south for a bit, and will be needing an aviation fix before long.   I also have a friend down here that would like to sit in an Avid and see if his  6'2"  frame would fit at all.   I'm also into Kitfoxs as well, so give a holler if you are at all close.  I'll be happy to buy the fuel if flying is involved.  Thanks,  JImChuk

Maybe you can sand off the paint in the area where you can see through my fuel tank, and be able to see the fuel level there.  I think that section of the tank was more transparent then the rest of the end of the tank..  Just don't sand to far.  ;-)    JImChuk

Here is a picture of the butt end of one of my Avid MK IV wings.  There is a partial rib behind the rear spar, but only the fiberglass fuel tank in front of it.  JImChuk

I've aways used the snowmobile type valves.  They seem to flow plenty of fuel, and they are fairly cheap.  JImChuk

The MK IV Avids I've had did not use a butt rib on the wing.  The fuel tank finishes off the end of the wing.  Got a picture of yours you could post?   JImChuk

I'm not saying we shouldn't be safe, but using that argument then we should also follow all the other rules for certified planes.   I thought one of the nice things about experimental category was we aren't under near as many rules and restrictions.  JImChuk

I would wonder about being mounted to the firewall myself.  Even with the rubber mount.  I've been wrong before though and there is more than one way to skin a cat.  On my Jabiru installation, the engine came with a pusher style muffler.  I ended up making exhaust extentions to get the muffler away from where the carb was.  On the Jabiru, I found that you can reverse the pipes and the muffler will still fit.  It's just where the carb has to be.  That was the reason for the extentions.  Anyway, I helped hold the muffler weight with some springs that hooked onto the motor mount.  I bet my muffler was heavier than your pipes especially with the heat muff in the winter for heat.  This was an early picture, and changed the heat muff after this pic was taken.  The muffler mounts worked well for over 400 hrs.  Never had an issue with the connection to the heads.  JImChuk

FAR 25 is for transport category aircraft.  I don't think that's our category. Hopefully the link works. Jim Chuk

I think your speaker doesn't know what he is  talking about when it comes to experimental aircraft.  Until he can prove it with an FAR, I will believe otherwise.   I've had 6 or 7 experimentals, and all of them had plastic tubing for fuel lines.  They were all Kitfoxes and Avids.  All of them received an airworthiness certificate with those lines.    I'm sure every Kitfox and Avid has that type of fuel line so the wings can fold as Ed mentioned.  JImChuk

I ran across a couple of videos I got a kick out of.  Watch the second one first, The one with the boxer dog.   The Hillery one is a parody of it, and then it will make more sense.  JImChuk

That's pretty much how I've synched carbs on the 2 strokes myself, although I've used a spring loaded hole gauge more recently.  Set it for the one side, and then adjust the other carb to match it.  JIm

Balanceing carbs with a digital manometer???
Hi all,  recently I had to change the gas valve on my furnace.  They need to be set to the right amount of pressure going to the burners.  I bought one of these digital manometers off of ebay.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Stgist-Digital-Manometer-Differential-Air-Pressure-Meter-9V-battery-11-Unit-/191815788522?hash=item2ca91ca7ea:g:W64AAOSwh2xYANQB    Those manometers have dual ports on top that are able to give a differencial reading from the one port to the other.  I got thinking I could use it for balanceing the carbs on a rotax engine, either a 582 if you hooked to the primer ports or on a 912 the way they are usually balanced with the ports on the carbs.  I happened to find this video on utube, seems this  "tomboy" came up with the same idea for her motorcycle.   First off, before you watch that video, IHAVE NO IDEA WHO SHE IS.. ;-)  Anyway, I would like your thoughts on this idea I had.  I'm trying to find uses for this instrument, hopefully it will be a long time before I ever need to change another gas valve.   I looked at this link after I posted it, and for some reason it comes in right near the end of the video, and then wants to start another video.  Just hit the view again button to start at the beginning.    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poOLTKcOV2s#t=376.521  I know you can check an ASI with a manometer as well to see how far off it is.  You would have to have a way to pump air in small amounts though if you use this gauge.  I know I've hooked a length of 1/4" hose to the pitot tube, plugged the other end and then started folding and kinking the hose.  That small amount of pressure will raise the ASI needle.  If the gauge was T ed into the line, you would be getting a reading on it.  Here is a link to testing an ASI with a manometer.  http://www.vansairforce.com/community/showthread.php?t=17328  Well a bunch of links, but the site isn't real busy.  What are your opinions?  JImChuk

  20. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic WIDTH OF AVID C and MKIV?

I think they are both the same size, C model to MK IV.  The A model was narrower, 36" wide at the shoulders, the B was widened out to 39.5"  That would mean all three are the same size.  JImChuk

Not sure what you mean about the acetylene, but maybe you are thinking about heating up the probes with a torch.  That will tell you if the gauge is working.  I would use a propane torch though,  Acetylene might be to hot.  JimChuk

Well if you burned your hand on the exhaust, it must be running on that  cylinder.  It's always a good idea to look at the plugs, they will tell the story for sure.  JImChuk

I agree with lostman on using a hand held lazer thermometer on the exhausts.  You really should get some reading even if it's low on those cylinders unless they aren't firing at all.  JImChuk

  25. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Electric trim??

I don't think I ever needed nose down trim either.  That's why a piece of bungee cord tied to the seat truss and going around the joystick works real good on an Avid if you don't have a trim tab.  Just slide the bungee up the joystick to put more back pressure on the stick. Cheap, simple, effective, and almost impossible to break.  You seldom get that combination on any part in an aircraft. ;-)  JImChuk
