Myself, If I was changing piston, wristpin, and, or bearing, I would stick with Rotax.  Base gasket wouldn't worry me if it was aftermarket.  What do you really need to do. If you don't score the piston or cylinder, those parts should go for a long time.  Decarboning the piston/rings only should require a new gasket.  JImChuk

There is a light aircraft group on Yahoo where a guy posts these adds.  He has figured out how to search craigslist nation wide and reposts the adds.  You can join that group.  Light_Aircraft_Sale   adhuntr.com will also connect you to craigslist search.   (I didn't miss spell it)  JImChuk

The more blades a prop has, the less efficient it is.  With the 3-1 ratio, a 70" 3 blade, or at least 72 " 2 blade is probably in order.  Avid actually supplied a 74 X 49" 2 blade wood prop with the 3-1 gear box setup, and it worked good.  As far as getting different prop blades for the 4 blade hub, the blades are made to be either right hand, or left hand.  Just thinking, and guessing:  Is it an ultra prop?  They only are made to 59" diameter, and therefor that's probably how many blades you would need to soak up the power from a 582.  The ultra prop is not a very good prop.  They are loud, and not real efficient.  They are pretty tough though.   I wouldn't get to excited about a prop at this stage, or maybe even the motor.  You have lots of work before you will need them, and if you keep your eyes open, deals come along when you aren't in a rush.  Actually, it maybe seems like a great deal shows up right after you bought something and it's to late to get the great deal  ;-)   JImChuk

You are right Ed.   A model had welded in motor mount.  Also has a different shape door than later models.  (Just like a Kitfox 1 door is different from later ones)  JImChuk

I don't know if the 3 blade IVO would be any smoother than the 3 blade warp, but the IVO would be was easier on a B gearbox.  I know the 3 blade IVO is a good bit smoother than the 2 blade warp.  Not as good of performance though.  JImChuk

That cowl sure looks like the one that was on my first Avid.  My guess on the prop is that it may have been a Perry prop.  There is one advertised on here now for 250.  These were the props that Avid supplied with kits sometimes.  I had good performance from the one I had.  A new prop and spinner would be a good price for $250.  If you go with a 3 blade warp, and a B box, that's a pretty heavy prop for that gearbox.  I am getting real good performance with a 2 blade Warp 70" taper tip prop on my Kitfox 1 582 with B box.  Not as smooth as a 3 blade though.  JImChuk

I would say the 504# would make it a C model. Pictures are always nice.  They tell more than words often times.   JImChuk

Welcome Jesse.  Avids are nice airplanes,  have fun building yours.  None of it is really rocket science, and don't be afraid of any of it.  If you have never covered an airplane before, don't worry about it.  Follow the manual, and it will be fine.  Poly fiber is real easy to work with in my opinion.  Feel free to ask any questions you have,  only dumb question is one you don't ask.   JImChuk

Found a picture of an eze smooth mount.  Notice the rectangle shaped tubing, and the aluminum pieces bolted to the engine mounting bolts.  JImChuk

Motor mount should work for both engines.  Not sure which mount you have,  there was a later one that was supposed to reduce engine vibrations.  Here is a picture of the original mount.  In this picture, there is an added piece that holds the radiators in place,  that was not original.   The later mounts had 2 pieces of aluminum that bolted to the engine, and used lord mounts to absorb the vibration.  JIChuk

It was covering a 582 before I changed it out.  When I get home, I'll take some pics and send them to you if you still want it.  We can hash out the details then maybe.  JImChuk

Here is a picture of the skis I've made for the Avids and such.  I've made 5 or 6 sets of them.   Some sets went with planes when I sold them, and sold a few sets as well.   They work good, but they aren't wheel penetration skis however.  I started making a sketch for them, but it's not totally complete with all dimentions.  Maybe I have it on this computer.  I'll look.   JImChuk

I used the boot cowl with the new cowl I made.  Just have the two front parts.  To each his own, and everyone likes different things,  but the reason I got rid of it and built a new one was to get better visibility over the nose.  It might be a bit lower than a Kitfox cowl, but not by much.  I like to see what's ahead of me, especially when landing or taking off.  JImChuk

Well at least you don't need to buy a new prop and tear down the engine to straighten the crank..... See, it could be worse :-).   Sorry you're done ski flying for a while.  JImChuk

A 2 blade 64" is really not very much prop on a 582.   You really have to put a lot of pitch into it to run it on a 582.  As you have found out.   You might want to check what your jetting is like in the carbs and see if that has any impact on your high EGTs.   Also checking out the tach to see that it's not over reading with your engine/prop combo.    Here is a good source of info on Rotax engines.  http://www.cps-parts.com/catalog/rtxpages/articles.php   Here is the section that deals with tuneing the carbs.  http://www.cps-parts.com/cps/pdf/Part10.pdf      Sorry if this is old news to you,  if not it's valuable info that will maybe keep you out of  the trees ;-).   JImChuk

I personally have never seen a 3-1 b gearbox.  I was told by Steve Beaty from airscrew performance about there having been 3-1 gears made for it.  He did say they were real rare, (maybe just in Europe ???) so that probably is not what you have.  You are right about high EGTs being caused by an under pitched prop.  Lean mixture will do it as well.  JImChuk

  24. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic FS: Peery Propeller 71"x37" in mint shape

The Perry prop was meant to go on a 2.58 ratio gearbox.  There were 2.0-1, 2.23-1 and 2.58-1 gear ratios for the A and B box.  Actually there were some 3-1 gear sets available but they are very rare.  I don't think he had a set of those, although that would explain it if the prop was way underpitched for his application.  I asked about the tack because so many of these westack tachs were very unreliable.  I agree with you ED on using the tiny tach.  JImChuk

I had one of those factory original perry props on my Avid B with a 532 engine.  It performed very well.  The 532 was supposed to make the same HP as a 582.  I'm surprised that this prop was under pitched for your 582.  Not arguing with what you said, but what tack did you have?  Here is the Avid B right before I flew it for the first time.  Sure was a fun little airplane.  It weighed 445 lbs and would climb like the proverbial homesick angel.  I would be tempted to try that prop on my Kitfox 1, but I now have the warp drive working pretty good.  JImChuk
