Is it possible to reverse the T shaped black tube in your picture?  Maybe there is more clearance on the other side and it's installed backwards????  Just guessing. :-)  JImChuk

7 gallon tanks would be about 17" wide.  14 gallon tanks are about 34" wide.  Should have no problem feeling/seeing where the tanks are or aren't. Here is a MK IV heavy hauler wing showing 14 gallon wing tank.   JImChuk

Keep at it TJay,  wont be long now!.   Wish I was working on my airplane projects.   I'm a bit further north, made it to Greenville SC where wife's daughter and grandkids live.  I'm doing projects for them now.   Women really do need a man around for those honey do projects.  I guess I got nominated here.   Keep on the fox, it will be ready for that first flight soon.  Keep up with the progress pictures also.  JImChuk

  6. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Cuyuna UL 430 RR engine

I believe that the gross weight on the A model was a bit less than 800 lbs.  Avid did test to much higher weights than that.  I have a picture somewhere showing them testing a B model wing to about 5.5 Gs for a half hour with no damage.  That was their wing though,  who knows what yours would take.   I believe your wing has .065" wall thickness spars.  That is not the weak point.  Kitfox goes up to 1550 gross weight with the same spars.  Different spar stiffeners, different lift struts, heavier carry throughs, ect, ect.  All those effect the gross weight possible.  JImChuk

If my memory is correct, scotchbrite and alcohol (to clean the spar, not to drink)  I think Kitfox said green scotchbrite  though.  Not sure if it's finer or courser then the purple.  JImChuk

My friend with the A model has a Hirth in his plane as well.  Another friend of his  helped him with the welding, and they kept the original mount, but altered it enough so the bolt pattern on the Hirth engine fit the mount.  Don't think it was much of a deal if one can do the welding.  The Hirth is inverted, just like the Cuyuna was before.  JImChuk

  10. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Parting out MK4 Avid

I think the original poster is Mike Butts.  From Massachusetts. I've seen his add on barnstormers.  Also talked to him on the phone last fall about the fuselage.  Older members here may remember a guy who flew a Jabiru equipted MK IV from California to New Jersy maybe 5-6 years ago.   The owner had a handle like 'Master of the universe' or something like that.  Somehow Mike got the plane and is parting it out.  Then again,  maybe I'm wrong on everything.  508 is a Ma. prefix though.   JImChuk

  11. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Cuyuna UL 430 RR engine

The Cuyuna engine was not a very reliable engine, but was available in these early planes.  Quicksilver used them as well to begin with.  When Rotax took an active role in making their engines available with a gearbox for airplanes, they took over the market.  And for a reason!  You would probably be well advised to consider a Rotax 503 or if you want water cooling, a 582.  Another option if you want a 4 stroke engine would be to go with an HKS engine.  That would work very nice on a light A model.  My first Avid was a rebuilt A model.  I have a friend who has an A model with a 55 HP Hirth engine as well that I have flown.  JImChuk
PS  I had a Cuyuna engine in my Quicksilver MX.  (my first airplane)

The way I read the add, the price of $730 was for one.  See the little quantity box with a 1 in it.  JImChuk

To know if your prop and engine are set up right, you should be able to turn between 6000- 6200 RPM static full throttle.  (tied off)  If you are under propped, (over revving) and fly it, you might burn up your engine.  JImChuk

I see them usually listed for more than that.  $1000+  There is a E box on barnstormers now for $1800.  No guarantee he will sell, but.... JImChuk

That is a very good (low) price.  The C box should probably sell for over half that price on ebay by it's self.   If it was mine, I would separate the parts and list them on ebay.  JImChuk

I think you called it Larry.  Some French car used a motor like this I think.  (without the gearbox) Can't remember the name right now.  Rather underpowered I think.   JImChuk

Don't think Cuyuna ever made an opposed twin.  Hirth did, but I don't think the heads looked like this.  JImChuk

The 582 Rotax uses 2 type 54 Bing carbs.    The Jabiru uses 1 type 94 bing carb.  Probably we are comparing apples to oranges on what they will tolerate for fuel pressure.  JImChuk

Jabiru supplied a 1.5 MM float jet for their bing carbs.  If you run gravity feed, Bing recommends using their 3 MM jet.  I flew with gravity feed in my Avid MK IV for many hours with the standard jet.  I did use an electric pump for takeoffs, although the one time I forgot to turn it on, I didn't notice it running out of fuel but turned it on after I was 20 or 30' in the air.  JImChuk
