Avid very strongly advised against having a filter between the wing tanks and the header tank.  Not a lot of head pressure in the tanks, and it doesn't take much to clog the filter and shut down flow.  Also the header tank acts as a large gascolator. so a filter past the header tank is far less likely to get junk in it to clog.  I had one off field landing before I got rid of the filters just down stream of the fuel tanks.  JImChuk

Wouldn't be surprised if the mileage isn't any worse than the dully pickup would have been.  And it will pull a load.  And stop it also.  JImChuk

I was looking through a CD for an airplane, and found the stuff was a lot harder to look at than the paper copies.  It costs more besides I believe.  JImChuk

Just to muddy the water a bit, changing props is considered a major change on the aircraft.  One is supposed to notify the local FISDO of the change and put the aircraft into phase 1 flight testing.  That doesn't happen all the time though.  Once when I did just that, later the FAA had no record of it.  Sent in the right form as well also.  One other thought, is it makes sense to get all the paperwork on your aircraft from the FAA.  Real easy to do, and doesn't cost much.   Never know what be lurking there that you don't know about.   JImChuk

You should also be able to use the same blades with a standard hub if your wood prop is not good.  JImChuk

No doubt, there are good deals that come by.  Got to have the cash on hand, and jump quick before someone else does.  I hit the jackpot recently myself on something as well.  Not sure when I'll get to it though.  JImChuk

Painting is the funnest part of the covering process.  All the hard, tedious work of gluing and fitting finish tapes, rib stiching, ect,  that take so long to do.  I can't wait to start spraying chemicals.  Then if a half hour, you really see progress.  That's how I see it anyway.  YMMV  JImChuk

Just saw this on barnstormers.  Would think it's a C model by the serial # and no step on the landing gear legs.  MK IV cowl and rudder though.  JImChuk

  15. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic I've got it covered......

Well, a bit more progress to show.  Put the  regular landing gear on last night, today I put the wings on.   By my self!  I have some wing stands that I made years ago, they go up and down, and the top tilts as well.  I lowered the wing down from where it was tied to the ceiling, and then got it on the wing stands.  Jockied one wing stand at a time about 6" then the other and walked them to where they needed to be to meet up with the plane.  Takes a bit of time, but it works.   I really worry that I will tip one over, but I've done this quite a few times, and never did yet.  Anyway, here are a few pics with the wings on.  Had to try the yellow lift struts to see if the jury struts would line up before I paint them.   JImChuk

Before you take the blocks out between the landing gear and the seat truss, look at the wheels and see if the blocks are there so the wheels are straight up and down, and not canted in on the bottom.  Before you change out the bungees, have a look at these messages where I show how I changed mine out on my Kitfox 1    "BY MYSELF!!!"  I'm kind of proud of that.  Can't do it on the Avid though,  and I'm ready to put them on.  I have the wheels tied together for now.  JImChuk

Really is amazing what was built years ago.  I went to an aviation museum in Hartford Ct a year and a half ago, went to the naval air museum in Pensecola Fl. last winter.  They have a B 29 in Ct.  Amazing how huge that plane is.  They even had a Flightstar  single seat UL like a friend of mine used to fly off my field.  Neat stuff, thanks for sharing TJay.  JImChuk

  19. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic speed wings/stol wings.

I have some Kitfox 4 ribs lying around.  I could perhaps trace one out for you. PM me your address.  As far as the Kitfox front carry through goes compared to the Avid, as long as the horizontal stabilizer was in line with wing I'm not sure what difference it would make.  Wouldn't it just help to see over that high cowl on the Kitfox while in flight?  I don't think the wing cares where the fuselage is other than drag as long as the stabilizer is lined up correctly with the wing.  JImChuk

  20. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic speed wings/stol wings.

I ran across a study done on wingtip advantages on line a few years ago, and it showed that drooped tips gave a slight improvement over other types of wing tips, but it was a very small amount.  I have not been able to find that study again when I looked for it, but I know what I  read.  On the same topic, I once talked with Wayne Ison who designed the Team Mini-Max and High-Max as well as other planes, and he told me that the drooped tips didn't do much better than the squared off wings.  Mostly just looks.  Interestingly, now Kitfox has gone away from the drooped tips as well.  I do know they can put a good sized dent in your head, and act as a skid in a ground loop.  (I don't know that last part from experience however) :-)   JImChuk

  21. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic speed wings/stol wings.

The very first Avid I ever flew in had full length wings with speed wing ribs.  The owner said it flew a good deal faster than the STOL wing Avids he flew with, and was almost as good getting off the ground.  He flew it quite often with other Avids, so had a good way to compare with planes with same engine and such.  After flying my Kitfox 1, I wonder if I wouldn't extend the wings another foot on each end to have same length as the Kitfox, but with the speedwing ribs.  Wouldn't be surprised if it beat a STOL standard wing both ways.  Don't have any real proof, just my gut feeling.  JImChuk

  22. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Blocking off the Oil Injector 582

There is a drain bolt on the pump, and once you purge that much, run a few gallons of mixed gas through the engine.  That's what I would do.  You will be able to see if there is oil or air in the lines going to the intake manifold.  JImChuk

  23. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Moving the throttle position

When I was about to start flying my first Avid, I wondered how I would switch hands, cause it was the opposite of what I was used to.  Over the years I've heard many other people ask the same question as you.  Like me, most of them did a bunch of taxeing in their plane and got used to it where it was.  I would recommend the same for you.  If you do any training with someone used to Avids, they will be right along side you to help you through the transition.  I really like the venier throttle system, real easy to make small throttle changes.  JImChuk
