Well the data plate on mine says 626 lbs with the Subaru.  A later W&B sheet shows the 800 something weight.  I think was first one was a guess at best.  JImChuk

Well then I would ask, what if your gauge is actually reading to low??  If it's not real hard to check, it can't hurt knowing what it's actually saying.  JImChuk

Another thing, are you absolutely sure of your temp gauge?  Although, at 95 OAT, I'm not surprised you are having issues with overheating.  When I put my sender in a can of boiling water, I found it was reading 20 degrees high.  Something to cross of the list if you haven't already done so.   JImChuk

Wow, that was light for your 5 at 680 lbs.  My kitfox 4 was over 800.  It did seem like they did everything they could to make it heavy though.  I'll bet I cut 5 lbs of zip ties off of it. :-)  Had about 20 lbs of weight in the tail, a 1200 lb BR$, ect, ect.  That would be 50 lbs right there between those items.  JImChuk

Actually it's been a bit of a slow process with these planes.  I got the Kitfox 1 flying about 9 months after I got it.  The Avid MK IV took about 6 years after I wrecked it.   This Kitfox 4 came from Texas 4 or 5 years ago.  I don't work on them all the time either.   Lately now with this Kitfox 4 I'm kind of pushing on it cause I want to get the fuselage painted before it gets to cold outside.  My work stall is heated, but not well enough to pull a lot of fresh air through there when I'm painting.  I figure to paint the fuse, and then I can mess with it in the winter at a bit of a more relaxed pace.  Going south for a while then as well, so if it flys next summer I'll be happy.  JImChuk

Just thinking some more on this Chris.  Have you measured your wing spars?  Are they .083" or .065" wall thickness?  JImChuk

If you really have 5/8" axels, I'm surprised you have any wheel alinement now.  I know Leni has bent 3/4" axels, and I have as well.  I even bent some 5/8" axels on my single seat Himax.   Maybe that says something about my landing tecknique...... and your's.   JImChuk

    Kitfox 4 rebuild
Well I thought about naming this topic, As naked as she can be!, but that would really only be describing this first post.  Would have probably had lots of one time views though! ;-)  Just about all that's left on her is paint.  I'll strip that off after I widen the fuselage, and add bracing above the landing gear.  I do have a question though for other Kitfox 4 owners.  In my experience, Avids are almost always nose heavy, even with a 2 stroke.  On my recent Avid MK IV rebuild, I mounted the battery as far back as I could get it to help offset this.  I'm going to be using a 912 Rotax on this Kitfox 4, and am wondering if I should make any provision for mounting the battery near the back for weight and balance issues?  I know some of the Kitfoxes have the battery on the firewall, this plane had it behind the turtle deck, but he was trying to offset a heavy Subaru engine.  Anyway, as I progress on this plane, I'll be adding to this thread.  Studying Larry's Mangy fox rebuild thread some as well.  I see his weight came in a just over 700 lbs,  what do others have for their Kitfox 4 empty weight?  JImChuk

Hi Ed,  I measured my Avid MK IV and the Kitfox 4 lift struts today.  91" on the Avid, 108" on the Kitfox 4.  The Kitfox 1 struts measure 98".  JImChuk
PS, just reread your post, and I'm talking lift strut length.  You were talking distance out on the spar to strut location.  Sorry.....

Don't think Avid ever used 5/8" axels.  All of them (from A model to MK IV)  I've been around were 3/4"  JImChuk

Hi Chris, glad to have you back on the list. (and still with us after that first flight)  Another guy on this list has a standard Avid MK IV that has extended wings, don't think he has had that problem.  Also, the Avid Magnum has longer wings.  I wonder if they perhaps have longer lift struts than standard Avids as well.  Kitfox went to longer struts on their Kitfox 3 and later for some reason.  I thought it had to do with increased gross weight, but maybe not.  On second thought on that last sentence, higher gross weight would cause the wing spars to bend more, so maybe that's the answer/cause.  Anyway, glad to have you back.  And maybe if Mark reads this, he can measure his liftstruts.  I'll now have to go out to the hangar and measure my Avid's liftstruts.  I found a picture I had showing the Kitfox 1's liftstruts are 98" from bottom bolt to front outboard bolt, (c-c)   One last thing, how wide is your fuselage where the wings attach?  JImChuk
PS  Avid MK IV liftstruts measured 91" and Kitfox 4 measured 108"

    Kitfox 4 rudder
Hi all,   I was stripping down the Kitfox 4 today, and when I went to pull the rudder, I had a couple of the bolts that were rusted into the heim joints.  They were locked into the inner bearing part with rust I'm guessing.  Still haven't got the top one out.  The bolts will spin, but the bearing will spin with it.  I'm just mentioning this so if anyone has a Kitfox 4 or later that uses these bearings on the rudder, it might be a good idea to oil them every once in a while in cast you ever want to remove the rudder.  JImChuk

Well I pulled most of the stuff out of the Kitfox today.  There is an ameriking AT 350 altitiude encoder in there as well.  They wont be going back into the rebuilt plane.  Sure came apart way faster than it will go back togeather.   And one other thing, if anyone knows of someone who wants to rebuild a Chief, I'm probably going to sell this one if I can get a fair price for it.  Got the headliner, fabric envelopes, and all the polyfiber chemicals with it.  65 HP Cont. with about 800 hrs since MOVH.    JImChuk

I like it, and I also like seeing the box of nails behind the springs.  Now a days with nail guns and all lots of people don't know that nails came in a 50 lb box.  Wish I had a buck for every 16 sinker I pounded in.  JImChuk

    Bendix King KY 97A radio
Hi guys, I got one other fuselage out of the garage today after painting it (a Chief)  and hauled the (Texas) Kitfox 4 fuselage up to start the rebuild on it.  Did the wings last summer, and now that the Avid MK IV is flying, I'll get back to the Kitfox.   It's got the Bendix King 97a radio in it, and it even worked when I checked it a few years ago.  I see they want an arm and a leg for a new one, (about $3000 at ACS)  I've always used handhelds, but am thinking about reinstalling this one.  Anyone have any experience with them?  Are they good?  How hard to hook up an intercom?  It's got a Narco AT 50A transponder as well, but I never fly where I need one so that will go on ebay unless it's out of date and no longer legal.  Anyway that's the story for tonight.  JImChuk

  22. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic motor mount?

Leni is right, Kitfox has 5 mount points. (from top of firewall down)   2 on top, 2 in the middle, and 1 at the bottom.  Avid has 6, 2 at the top, and 4 across the middle of the firewall.   Also, if I remember right, the bottom mount on the Kitfox is 1/4" further out or in then the others.  Also, unless you have the streached Avid fuselage, you will have serious issues with the heavy weight of the Subaru out front where a much lighter engine was originally figured to be.  Then you will have to put a bunch of weight in the tail to get the W&B to work out.  It will end up being a two place aircraft if one is a small kid... :-)  And it you did use a Subaru on the Avid, I believe you are supposed to put an additional mounting point down at the bottom of the fire wall for the motor mount.  Don't you have a nice light 582 for that plane?  If you really want the Subaru engine, I have one I will sell you with an NSI gearbox on it.  Even has a Kitfox 4 mount bolted to it.... JImChuk
PS  sorry if I got carried away with my answer.  The internet was down all day, and I'm just getting back on line............

Wow, that is some interesting dirt you have around there.  Straight sidewalls on the dig.  Looks like you dug it with the skidsteer??  Nice the way you have the bottom so nice and flat as well.  So much easier to work the forms and such.  All poured out also.   I love the smell of concrete in the morning.  (wish I had $100 for every load I emptied)  You are going to have a fun fall.  Stay busy and beat the winter??  Looks good.  JImChuk

  24. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic fwf value?

To start with, the engine should be torn down and inspected and have new seals installed, being that it has sat as long as it has.  Second item is what gearbox is on it.  Both items will effect the price.  If it's been gone through, and has a C box, $3500 should not be out of line at all, in reality, actually maybe a bit low.  A new blue head is about double that, but then it's a new blue head, not a 25 year old gray head.  Also, it all depends on what the market is like.  More people wanting to go to 4 strokes and  away from 2 strokes.  JImChuk
Was just talking price on engine, noticed afterwards, you said fwf.  I suppose you mean mount and radiators, ect??

A B box looks like the second picture, although an A box looks almost the same except where you see bolt heads holding it together and on to the engine, you will see studs and nuts.  C box and E box look similar, but the E box has a built in electric start.  JImChuk
