  1. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic wing tank replacement

Doug posted a bunch of pictures a while back of the different profiles of the wings, and the Kitfox 1 - 3 are not exactly the same as the Avid. Maybe I can compare the ribs also and tell what the difference is.   Sloshing may not work, but then again maybe it will.  That is a lot less work and $ than pulling out the tank.  YMMV  JImChuk

Isn't there a guy out in Idaho making the tanks?  I can't remember his name, but we talked about this about a year or so ago.  I can't remember his name right now,  but he may have even posted here.  Search the archives perhaps.  JImChuk

Can't tell what your fasteners are, but I've used large (truss)  head 1/8" aluminum pop rivits with an 1/8" washer on the inside.  JImChuk

  5. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic How many MPH does a belly radiator cost?

No first hand info on the radiators, but drag is drag, whether it's air being forced through the cowl and radiators there, or thorough the radiator down below the plane.  Funny thing, you would expect a lot more drag from the big round cowl on the Kitox verses the later style cowl many Kitfoxs are using now.  Not sure it made that much of a difference.   JImChuk

Nice video.   Thanks for sharing it with us.   On that last airstrip, it sure would get ugly to get to low on final and then have the engine quit.  Ouch!   JImChuk

What radiator is being used on the Avid with the radiator inside the cowl?  (First picture)  JImChuk

  8. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic MKIV 912 Swap

I saw that engine in one of your other pictures Joey, I'm sure you will like it once all is said and done.  I do have a MK IV cowl with that added opening for air to a radiator, I'm going to use it on the Kitfox 4 I'm rebuilding.  (Don't like looking over the high round Kitfox cowl)  I'm  planning to just go with the regular Kitfox style under belly radiator though.  It seems to work good on the Kitfoxes with the 912, and I have one besides.  The cowl will need some work to fit on the Kitfox as you can see in the picture.  JImChuk

Looking good Mark.  I was just building a couple more sets of skis today.   Last year was the earliest ever for me on skis, I flew on Nov. 20 with skis.  Looks like this year will be sooner.  Almost have to much snow for wheels now.  Supposed to be a low of 4 Thursday night.  Wont be long the lakes will be freezing over...... 11. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Kitfox IV Cowl to Firewall Seal

I think I made the cap strip 1 1/2" wide, but cut the cowl so it's split at the firewall.  If you go with a one piece top cowl, you could use a piece of angel and cut/notch one leg of it every 2 inches or so,  then you can curve it around the top of the firewall.  Here is a picture showing how I did that on a different plane.  The angel turns towards the back of the plane.  It would actually be less work and maybe seal better than the other method.  JImChuk
PS  found another picture where the angel was turned forward

  12. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Kitfox IV Cowl to Firewall Seal

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but this is what I did on my Avid MK IV firewall.  It's all stainless steel.  The seal  could glue onto the top cap strip.  I have to add a seal on mine as well.  Not sure I want to pay $13 per foot though.  Think  that was what I was seeing.  Then again, maybe 5' is all you need.  $65 or so...... I found that a 2 blade 70" warp drive taper tip out performed a 3 blade 68" IVO by 20%  at least.   Cruise and climb.  This was with a 582 with 2.58 B gear box.  IVO was smoother, but......YMMV.  JImChuk

  15. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic smaller tires???

Here is another option for smaller tires.  Maybe you can find a set of Avid Flyer wheels.  They will fit on the Kitfox axels.  If my memory is right, the Kitfox axels stick out about 3/8" longer than the Avid ones do.  If you use more washers under the axel nut, it will work.  If it's the other way around, then you would have to push the axels out that extra 3/8" redrill them and rebolt in the new position, and use more washers if you put the Kitfox wheels back on.   JImChuk

Wow, it seems like lately, everytime I see these tires they are cheaper than the time before.  I paid $100 for 2 of them with free shipping in July, and thought I got a good deal.  Guess I should have waited.  I haven't put them on anything yet.  Figured to put them on the Kitfox 4 when it's done.  I have a set on the Avid Flyer now.  JImChuk

Yamaha 4 stroke engines for sale
Hi all, an outfit that I get stuff from has a couple of Yamaha 4 stroke engines for sale from wrecked snowmobiles. One is a 3 cylinder  2006? Apex engine, with about 4000 miles on it.  The other one is a 4 cylinder RXI 2005 with just under 3000 miles.  Both engines are carbureted engines and they would come with carbs and wireing and computer.  $1500 each.  If you are interested, contact me with a PM, and I'll give you his contact info.  I was just there today getting some other stuff and I asked him about engines.  JImChuk

  21. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic KItfox 1 vs KitfoxIV tail section size

It does look nice, close to home and at a good price.  Only has a 503, and at first glance I would say that's underpowered for a Kitfox 4, but after a couple of flights in the one in Pensecola Fl. last winter, I was really supprised how well it performed.  The owner wasn't afraid of it in the least either.  We were either flying over city, or tall trees, ocean or swamp most of the time we were flying in it. Performance was for sure helped by being at sea level, but it really did the job.  JImChuk

Lots of sites have a gallery of photos, so if you get a number of pics, but only use one on the MK IV page, you  could stick the others there.  JImChuk

  24. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Wanted - 582 engine mount

Just a heads up on this mount.  As he says, it's from a B model.  A later mount that was an option with the MK IV model was called a dyna-smooth mount or something like that.  It used different rubber mounts and was supposed to reduce the 2 stroke vibrations getting to the airframe.  Supposed to be better, and I think it probably was.  Here are pics of one.  JImChuk
