  1. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Big wheels and upgraded gear wanted for Avid 4

Good point Jared about the grove gear mount.  My concern with your gear was the long leg carrying the wheel, and the rearward forces pushing against it when it hits a bump or something.  Being that it's long and not real wide where it attaches to the plane.  I wondered if it was attached to the rear lift strut carry through, it would have less leverage against it, but you can only make it so big also.  Testing will prove it out.  I do think I would make up a trailer frame to mount it to so if the gear fails when you are testing it, you don't hurt your fuselage.  But like you said, the grove is a lot narrower, so maybe yours will be just fine.  JImChuk

With the door bowed out in the middle, I don't think you would ever get one piece to fasten down without it wanting to wrinkle somewhere.  And TJay is right about having the door in place when you drill and mount the lexan.  If the door is wracked, and you fasten the lexan to it, that's the shape the door will want to stay in, and it won't want to fit the door opening and close right.  Maybe if it's close it will still fit with no problems, but like my Avid where I widened the fuselage 3", the door had to be wracked quite a bit to fit the new door opening.   JImChuk

  3. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Testing Fabric

The sail cloth on these planes is about 5 oz. per yd.  I've seen the tester used on new sailcloth pieces, and when the tester punched through, it was like a 22 going off.  Amazing how much pressure it took to push that 1/16" pin through.  Most Kitfoxes and Avids are hangared, and the fabric will probably last the life of the plane that way if you use the right amount of UV protection in the covering process.  Sail cloth doesn't get the same UV treatment.  JImChuk

Leni,  if you are following any of this thread, where did you locate the prop hub on  the Avid 912 motor mount you built a few months back?  Any flight reports for that mount?  JImChuk

I'm wondering if the thrust angel should be figured more off the incidence of the wing.  You raise the tail to a specific place to do a weight and balance.  Up/down angel of thrust maybe should be figured from that place.  Firewall could be at any angel, and different from one aircraft type to the next.   JImChuk

The MK IV VS is straight.  I remember John Miller talking about when he put a Jabiru  (right hand prop) on a B model Avid.   The B model VS was off set for a Rotax 2 stroke engine   (left turning prop)  He put a trim tab on his rudder to make the plane fly straight.  Doesn't seem like it was that big a deal if my memory is correct.   JImChuk

Does the Yamaha prop turn the same as the Rotax 912?  (right hand)  If it does, I would think copying where a 912 mount puts the prop would probably be a good place to start.   JImChuk

I believe you are talking about 2 different airplanes.  An Avid MK IV and a Kitfox 5 may be quite a bit different in the angel of the firewall, one to the other.  JImChuk

Doug,  I looked for fuselage stretch posts, and find where you talked about it, but nothing showed up for drawings and such.  If you can find that info, can you post it up?  JImChuk

My Avid has 8" Kitfox wheels.  Tires are just like the nanco 21/12/8"  tires.  They are a set of the Kingfox tires that were available about 8 years ago.  Here is a link to the nanco tires on ebay.  JImChuk

  12. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic looking for a speedwing rib

I wonder how the Kitfox 4 flaperon hinge location verses the Avid Flyer (or pre Kitfox 4 models) would line up.  Might have to change the location of the flaperon bearing on the side of the turtle deck??? Not sure, just wondering.  Also, a Kitfox 4 does not use long ribtails to hang the flaperons, but aluminum brackets riveted to the rib.  The Kitfox 4 is probably a better airfoil though.  Just might run into other problems you didn't think of to start with.    JImChuk

With a 3 blade 72" Warp, you may have to much prop on the plane.   What did Darrell from Warp drive have to say about it?  I had a 3 blade 70" warp on the front of an Avid, 582 with 3 - 1gearbox, and I had the impression it was almost to much prop.  If you have to flatten out the blades to much to get to your intended RPM, at some point, all the blades are doing is making mostly drag, and not much pull.   JImChuk

Isn't it crazy the prices they get for these parts....  New piston 220, one ring 60,  other one 90.  But I guess if they have it and you need it, they can charge what they want.... and they do!  JImChuk

Some interesting differences of opinion on the Yahoo Avid group in regard to flying a speedwing.  Don't know if this will get you there if you aren't a member.  JImChuk

One guy who changed his 582 to a Jabiru said everything included in the 582 installation weighed 135 lbs.  Jabiru with mount and oil came in at 136 I believe.  The Jabiru does sit a little further forward than the 582 though.  They are both lighter than the Yamaha though.  I would thing a stretched Avid would be much better than a standard length fuselage with that extra weight.  JImChuk

    582 hot start problem
A guy I know has been having problems with his 582.  Starts fine when cold, after landing and still hot, it acts like no spark and doesn't want to start. After it's cooled, takes off just fine.  When the symtoms were explained to the LEAF tech guy at Oshkosh last summer, he says you have a bad stator.  Interestingly, started having excessive noise in the radio when this problem started happening as well.  My question is this.  Being that his 582 has dual ignition, why would a bad stator cause both ignitions to loose spark in a case like this.  JImChuk

  21. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic What pitch to use on a 582 3 blade 68" Kiev 2.58 gearbox

First off, are you sure of the tach's accuracy?  Some are very inaccurate.  A tiny tach is usually right on.  If you were way over pitched to start with, you wouldn't be getting enough rpm/horsepower.  Seems that was the case by what other things you mentioned.  I'm trying to remember from about 5 years ago when I set up and started flying a different plane with a 3 blade warp taper tip, and as I remember it, climb out rpm was a good bit different from static rpm.  Memory says it was the other way from yours, but I could be wrong.  At any rate, make sure you tach is correct.  In regard to your question, if say you were only getting 300 fpm climb, it should obviously improve if your rpm goes up.  But if the tach is not right, it's just a guessing game.  JImChuk
PS  did you call Warp Drive and talk to Darrel about where he would recommend setting the prop to start with? He is real good to talk with, and will help any way he can.  Even if it was a used warp drive prop.....

  22. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Tow Bar Drawings for Kitfox

It wasn't my tow bar or truck in the picture I posted.  I noticed how low it was, and now looking at the picture again, I wonder if it's not up side down.  See how the mounting tabs go down?   The black one and the drawing show the tabs going up.  That would raise the airplane up 6" or 8" more.  You would think the ball hitch should  be a giveaway,  but maybe someone had a 'better idea' and turned it over.  JImChuk

I posted a reply on your other post dealing with this topic.  The shop that has done all my 2 stroke rebuilds always checks the crank for trueness. (not twisted)   They will also fine tune the crank if that is necessary.  If your engine is from the original kit and never been apart, he should have new seals put in the engine.  That would give the shop a chance to check the crank while they are at it.  I've never used the steel pin and have done 4 582s, 2 532s , 1 447 a couple of times.  A cuyuna 440...........JImChuk
