Just found another Avid on Barnstormers.  A B model.  Turns out I know a bit about this airplane.  I got my first ride in an Avid in this plane.  Ron Weber from Minneapolis area built it.  It has long wings but speed wing ribs.  It flew nice, and faster than a STOL wing.  Seemed like a nice plane.  I don't remember if it had the wing fences on it then or not. I had read in the Sport Aviation mag a couple of years ago that he had gone west.  Nice guy..... Bummer.  JImChuk

Low price.  I think Kitfoxes gets 1500 for one without the wheelpant.  JImChuk

I would say you already have one.  Called the exhaust manifold.  Snug up the cylinders to the crankcase, then snug up the manifold, loosen the cylinders just a tiny bit, tighten the manifold, retighten the cylinders, reloosen the manifold, then re tighten it, and you should be good to go,.  You have to have the cylinders  line up the with the exhaust manifold when it's all over, and  this will get you there.  JImChuk

I bought my stainless steel for my Avid rebuild from online metals.  Been a while, but it was probably the best price available.  Worth checking out at any rate.  JImChuk

  6. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Tightening fabric

I was just pondering your question, and here are some of my thoughts, (and they are worth every penny you paid for them).  ,:-) .If you heat the fabric up much more than 375 degrees, you run the risk of melting and ruining the fabric.  If you use an iron, you will melt the paint and make a mess of the paint.  If you could use a heat gun that kept the temp under 350, it might not make such a mess of the paint.  Another way that might work is to use MEK, remove the finishes in that area, tighten if you can with an iron, and then refinish that area.  It would be interesting to try a heat gun on a finished surface that you didn't care about to see what will happen.  I have some Kitfoxes tailfeathers that I'm going to recover when I get home, but that will still be a few weeks away.  I think the oratex people have heat guns you can calibrate.  One you would buy at a hardware store puts out something like 600 degrees on the low setting.  Course further away from the tip you go, the cooler you get.  Maybe you could aim at a meat thermometer to find the right temp.?  JImChuk

I would use the thermostat if at all possible.  They help to prevent cold seizure of the engine.   The only time you want the engine to go quiet is when you turn off the key...  JImChuk

I have the same battery in my Avid,  and I think it's only about 12 lbs.  My strap looks to be about the same size.  At 10 - 12 gs of force, you may have other things to worry about besides just the battery coming loose.  JImChuk

  10. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Avid Wing Tanks

My own opinion, for what it's worth.  There was a good reason why Avid and Kitfox went away from aluminum tanks, and both tried them.  The wings do flex in flight, and the flexing causes cracks in the tanks that of course then leak.  If the tanks that were only 18" long cracked, what chance does a 6' long tank have?  Also, do you increase the odds of the tank's outlet unporting with the long tank?  If you were flying uncoordinated, will the fuel all end up at the outboard end of the tank?  What kind of baffeling do you plan?  Not trying to bash you, but these are some of the negative thoughts I had when I pondered your tank idea.  Glad you are advancing the Avid aircraft progress, would be nice to see you make a complete success out of all of this.  JImChuk

There are some kits that you can build, you use a cell phone that you call that lights up when it's ringing, and that signals the unit to turn on the switch.  There are much more expensive ones that you can buy though.  Don't have any links right now though.  JImChuk

I had run across this a while back, and couldn't find it again.  Of course now that I've posted the titles, I found the video it came from.  There is a bit more to it than just the song titles.    Funny I think.  JImChuk

I got a kick out of these, maybe you will to.  JImChuk
How can I miss you when you won't go away.If the phone doesn't ring you'll know it's me.When you leave walk out backwards so I'll think you're walkin' in.If I had shot you when I wanted to, I'd be out by now.If you won't leave me alone, I'll find someone who will.I'm so miserable without you, it's almost like having you here.I'm sorry I made you cry but at least your face is cleaner.Take me out to the cornfield honey, and I'll kiss you between the ears. The oil is all in Texas, but the dipsticks are all in DC.

Usually a stretch is to offset a heavy engine.  And the last thing you need with a heavy engine is small wings.  JImChuk

If you drop one blade, (from 3 to 2) you probably don't have enough pitch adjustment without changing the gear ratio.  Ed,  an IVO uses the same hub, 2 or 3 blade.  Spacers are used to make up the difference between 2 and 3 blades width.  JImChuk

I have an extra set of 1500s with dolly wheels I picked up last summer.  :-)  Rigged for a Chief, but probably same as for a Champ. JImChuk

I know I've said it before, but will say it again.  If you fill at the top of the hose that goes to the lower oil fitting, the air will get pushed out as the oil level rises.  After the hoses are both full hook the hose back to the bottle, and fill the bottle.  You can still tip it up on it's nose, but probably wont get any oil out.  Especially important to get the air out on an inverted engine.  JImChuk

  23. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Kitfox 1 questions

That could almost double your yardage compared to a running yard.  With the 70" fabric I would have figured 35 yds.  I'm trying to remember if anyone who had done a complete Kitfox or Avid in Oratex posted what it cost them complete.  JImChuk

All of them I've done have used a bushing.  I would think it's better if the belt can swivel somewhat.  JImChuk

Another thing to think about is does Oratex meaxure  by the sq yard or the running yard.  The 32 and 35 yard figures were using fabric that was 70" wide, figured by the running yard.  (which would be almost 2 square yards for each running yard)  JImChuk
