Or else count how many times a piston goes up and down in one revolution of the prop shaft.  Or vice versa.  Pull a spark plug, use a probe to find when it comes up to TDC.  JImChuk

On the earliest Avids, the factory built their own tailwheel, basically a fork for the wheel, and a cross piece on top of the fork that the tail wheel springs hooked to.  Used a 4" or 5" OD wheel.   On the Hirth engine, I have a receipt showing he paid $6960 for the engine last fall.  It has a 2.59 gear ratio in the gearbox.  He did 2.1 hrs ground break in and 4.1 flight hours after that.  (my  earlier math was wrong, 6.2 hrs total).  Hirth claims 1000 or 1200 hr TBO on this engine.  (can't remember which right off hand) Have about 2 1/2 gallons of blue max oil that goes with the engine.  $5000 + shipping for the engine.  I'll try to get the tail wheel pics in a bit.  JImChuk
PS, don't forget, she's a widow, and a friend of mine

What is the gear ratio on your C box?  It may work if you had the 2.62 gear ratio.  This prop is 66" long.  Might be on the short side??? JImChuk

Parting out A model Avid STOL wing
Hi all,  I hauled my friend's plane over to my place today.  His widow is worried about liability issues, and so she wants to part it out.   It was flying last fall, and would fly today as far as I know.  65 HP Hirth 3203 engine that was installed new, last fall as well.  Has only 5 hrs on the engine. Sad to see it pieced out, but that is the way it's going to go.  Wings are good, flaperons are good, really everything for that matter.  If anyone has any interest in parts of the plane, let me know.  We haven't cancelled the registration yet, but it's going to happen.  Plane had a total of about 190 hrs on it, has home made skis, is on a trailer that will be for sale as well.  Well let me know....  JImChuk

The simplest life form is probably millions of times more complex than the key board I'm typing on.  None of us would think that the keyboard just happened.  Why would I believe that all life forms "just happened".  But to each his own, I guess.  Sorry if this offends, but I like to give credit to where credit is due.  JImChuk

Bob,  I would say that is a MK IV fuselage judging by the gussets on the rear carry through and the 5/8" OD tube on the seat truss.  Wish it was closer... JImChuk

Bob, can you post some pictures of the rear spar carry through area?  Also, the diameter of the top tube of the seat truss.  Trying to figure if it is a MK IV fuselage.  Any idea what the N # was originally on that fuselage? Again, trying to figure out what model it actually was.   JImChuk

Nice pics Joey,   that's the time I love to fly, just before sunset.  I'm still on skis here, which got some use in the last couple of days.  JImChuk

I just broke a tail spring last week, so don't throw the spring away, I maybe would take it off your hands...  Over 500 hrs on it, and far far to many poor landings.  Actually, it held up pretty well.  JimChuk

I would either get the right width tailwheel, or else use a spacer that will make up the difference in width.

  12. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Selling aircraft/widow's liability

The odds of a successful suit for a flying plane is very slight.  For just parts?  Much more slim.  I suppose a lawyer could sue someone who just walked by the plane as well, but is it likely??  JImChuk

Yes Ed, she wants to sell off the parts and plans to deregister the plane.  I told her to think about it for a few more days and then tell me one way or the other.  JImChuk

Thanks, guys for all the replys.  Looks like the plane is most likely going to get parted out.  It's an A model Avid Flyer with the long (STOL) wing.  242 hrs total on the plane, has a 3203 Hirth 65 HP engine that was installed new last fall.  5 hrs total on the engine.  I am going to be doing the sale of the pieces unless she changes her mind on parting it out.  If anyone is interested in any parts of it, let me know.  Sure is kind of sad, he's gone, and now the plane will go away as well.   JImChuk

One thing to remember as well, is that the original design was plenty strong enough to handle flight loads.  Having  the ribs half rotted off or sudden and severe impact applied, goes beyond the original design.  Preflight well, and don't bang into to things goes a long way toward avoiding problems.  JImChuk

I just skimmed through the earlier posts, looking for the Kitfox SB.  Didn't see it, but this is my point.  The bottom of the Kitfox rib is not the same as the bottom of the Avid Flyer rib.  On the Kitfox, there is room for the aluminum doubler, but not on the Avid.,  Some how, my computer has been updated this morning by Microsoft (I think) and I can't figure how to access my photos so I can't right now post pictures to show you what I'm talking about.  On a side note, any advice on the computer would be helpful, I'm guessing I wasn't the only one.  JImChuk

    Selling aircraft/widow's liability
Hi guys, I know this topic has come up often before, but here is the situation. A friend of mine owned an Avid Flyer A model, and he passed away last December. I told him I would help his wife sell the plane if that's the way things went. He was the builder of the plane, and so now his wife is worried about liability if she sells the plane to someone else. She may want to part it out to avoid that worry. What would you say to her if you were me? I'll be doing all the work either way it goes. Thanks, JImChuk

Benjamin,  take a look at the add I just posted it the For Sale section.  $10,000 less $ and a lighter 4 stroke engine.  Best to look at as many options as possible before kissing your dollars goodby.  JImChuk

Avid C with Jabiru for sale on yahoo group
I'm copying this from the Avid  yahoo group.  I know what the add says about the plane, and no more.  Price doesn't seem high at all.   JImChuk

8:00 AM (4 hours ago) to Avid    I'm considering the possibility of selling my Avid C. It has tri-gear conversion by Randy Moore of Dyersburg TN.    I've been told these are heavy hauler wings. Matco hydraulic brakes with pilot and co-pilot toe pedals.    It also has the EIS engine monitoring system.   If you know of anyone interested at $15,750.00, I can give more details to anyone interested.

Leni,  I think you hit it with the aircraft spruce threaded rod end.  And it would eliminate any welding for our English friend.  Could maybe even drill one 3/16" hole through the tube with the rod end in place, and put a AN 3 bolt through there to hold it all together.  That would then be the same size as the bolt going through the heim joint end.  No way it would let go...... Just another thought.  JImChuk
PS  this thread also shows the importance of gust locks when trailering

Where is the stop for the elevator?  I use a piece of aluminum angel screwed to the floorboards to stop the forward motion of the joy stick.  Simple, and it works.  JImChuk
