I believe the floats are supposed to weigh at or less then a certain amount as a way of checking them.  3.5 grams seems like the right number.  Maybe this will jog someone else's memory and they can answer for sure.  Just googled it and I'm right.  JImChuk

    It was a long winter
I went flying on Friday evening with a friend and we took some pictures.  Notice the foot wear..... Latest ever to still be on skis for me I'm guessing.  Saturday the strip melted to much, and I put the wheels back on, on Sunday.  Now if it will dry up.... JImChuk

You might be able to get the floats through a BMW motorcycle parts supplier.   JImChuk

I took some pictures of the Avid A model today, and while I was at it, I snapped a couple of pics of where the rear spar attaches to the wing carry through.  Notice that the tops of both of the verticle tubes that the rear wing spar attaches to.  When you were showing the picture of your flaperons being different heights, I wondered if one of your tubes is higher than the other.  That would lift the back of the wing and the flaperon if one side was higher than the other.   Anyway, something to look at.  JImChuk

Now you got me wondering about my numbers Paul.  I will have to go look at my 912 engine.  It is from 1999 I believe.  Have a new IVO for it.  Thought it was a 75 MM.  Been wrong lots of times before though.  Looking at the LEAF catalog, they show the prop shaft with a bunch of different holes in it.  I see Warp's crush plate comes in 75MM, 100MM, and 101.6 MM patterns.  JImChuk
PS, My IVO that I bought for the 912 has the 75 MM bolt pattern.  I didn't get to the engine yet, but I'm sure it's right for it.  (better be! :-)

They are speedwing ribs, so the mounting would look a bit different from STOL or HH wings.  They are mounted in the center of the rib tail, so I'm guessing that's not the issue.  JImChuk

Good catch TJay, I didn't see that.  Wonder if the angle of the horn on the flaperon is correct??  It is odd also, if the back of the left wing at the fuselage is high, you would expect the end of that flaperon to be higher than the other as well, wouldn't you? Interesting...... JImChuk

I'm editing my post completely.  When I first read it, I thought you were talking about the ends of the flaperons, now I realize you're talking about both ends of the flapeons.  Do like flywise said, set the plane up level in flying attitude, and get out your 4' level.  Swing the wings out.  Check the wings at the fuselage to see if there is a difference, if there is, are both wings the same distance vertically from the wing carry through, or is the top of the fuselage twisted?  Then check the difference in the wings with the level at the rib just inboard of the lift strut attachments.  The plane in the picture flew about 200 hrs, with no problem, and you can see the flaperons are not the same height when folded.  JImChuk

    IVO prop on barnstormers
Just saw this add on barnstormers for this IVO prop.  A 912 pusher configuration takes a left hand prop, and that's what a Rotax 2 stroke requires.  One thing to ask about is the bolt pattern.  Not sure if the later 912s used a larger bolt pattern than the 75 MM on the 2 stroke??  Price is way less than a new one, you can cut the IVOs down to shorter if need be or maybe run as a 2 blade at full length.  JImChuk

Not really the question you were asking about, but if you are running at static 6500 rpm, you will most likely over rev the engine on climb out.  EGTs will most likely run much hotter, and then you are asking to experience that big silence when the fan stops turning.  6250 static would be a much better place.   JImChuk
PS  more related to your question, I checked the compression on a Hirth yesterday and it was 135 lbs in both cylinders.

I forgot to post a picture of the tail wheel.  The owner of this Avid made a new tailwheel fork for the plane that would take a larger wheel than the shopping cart sized one they came with originally.  The small pneumatic tire in the picture came from Northern Hydraulics.  2" wheel size I think.  Bearing were replaced with some better ones.  Here is the wheel he used.  I did the same thing on one of my early Avids.  JImChuk

I finally got some pictures yesterday of the rudder pedals, so here they are.  A bit of explaining here first, Jim was kind of a big guy, and the Avid A is kind of small, so he rigged it up as a single seater.  He sat in the center, and had the toe brakes on the outside rudder pedals.  Put an s curve in the joy stick so it was in the center of the plane.  It worked.  I flew the plane once myself several years ago.  Any way, that explains what you will see in the pictures.  Not trying to avoid a sale, but I wonder if there is a set of pedals around somewhere that are set up for hydraulic brakes already??  It would be less work for sure.   Anyway, here are the pics with a tape measure showing lengths.   JimChuk

Yes Ed, I want the snow.  I flew tonight on skis, might get to tomorrow, but the snow is going fast, so maybe I'll have to wait till I can go onto wheels.  A friend and I were shooting landings on the local lakes in our planes.  Great fun.  JImChuk

You could maybe put a thin washer under the one needle snapring keeper to make that side run just a bit richer.  But I agree with Chris, 50 degrees isn't that much.  Maybe even reverse the probes the see if the reading stays the same.  No guarantee the probes read exactly the same either.   JImChuk

What covering system did you use?  If poly fiber, use the syringe and polybrush.  Just got to come up with a way to hold the fabric tight against the tank while the poly brush dries.  If the wing was off I would turn it upside down and lay a sandbag on the area I shot with the poly brush, and after it set up, move to another spot and do it again.  JImChuk

Bucky, or anyone else for that matter, I talked to a guy a couple of days ago that had a Perry prop and 2   68" IVO blades on barnstormers for sale.  He seems to want to make a deal on these props pretty bad.  Maybe no body but me responded.  He wanted $300 for the Perry, but will take less, even asked me for an offer.  Wanted $340 for the IVO blades, they are in real good shape, and he was open to offers on them as well.  Here is a link to his add.,  I had a perry on a 532, and it worked real good.  They came with the Avid kits if you chose a wood prop for the 532.  532 is supposed to make the same amount of power as a 582, so maybe it would work...???   JImChuk

Or else count how many times a piston goes up and down in one revolution of the prop shaft.  Or vice versa.  Pull a spark plug, use a probe to find when it comes up to TDC.  JImChuk

On the earliest Avids, the factory built their own tailwheel, basically a fork for the wheel, and a cross piece on top of the fork that the tail wheel springs hooked to.  Used a 4" or 5" OD wheel.   On the Hirth engine, I have a receipt showing he paid $6960 for the engine last fall.  It has a 2.59 gear ratio in the gearbox.  He did 2.1 hrs ground break in and 4.1 flight hours after that.  (my  earlier math was wrong, 6.2 hrs total).  Hirth claims 1000 or 1200 hr TBO on this engine.  (can't remember which right off hand) Have about 2 1/2 gallons of blue max oil that goes with the engine.  $5000 + shipping for the engine.  I'll try to get the tail wheel pics in a bit.  JImChuk

What is the gear ratio on your C box?  It may work if you had the 2.62 gear ratio.  This prop is 66" long.  Might be on the short side??? JImChuk

Parting out A model Avid STOL wing
Hi all,  I hauled my friend's plane over to my place today.  His widow is worried about liability issues, and so she wants to part it out.   It was flying last fall, and would fly today as far as I know.  65 HP Hirth 3203 engine that was installed new, last fall as well.  Has only 5 hrs on the engine. Sad to see it pieced out, but that is the way it's going to go.  Wings are good, flaperons are good, really everything for that matter.  If anyone has any interest in parts of the plane, let me know.  We haven't cancelled the registration yet, but it's going to happen.  Plane had a total of about 190 hrs on it, has home made skis, is on a trailer that will be for sale as well.  Well let me know....  JImChuk
