Here are the wings I mentioned on team kitfox yesterday.  Not barnstormers, ebay.  I didn't real the whole tread, but my memory says the wings are longer than HH wings.  they use 2 jury struts for instance.   Also count how many ribs out the strut attachment bracket is. JImChuk

James T,  here is what I did with the Kitfox 4 I'm rebuilding.  Nice thing about this, is it doesn't make any changes to the original structure.  Well at least not in the sense of removing or cutting existing tubes.   Being that the Kitfox 1 is way narrower to start with, and has the smaller bottom on the door, probably a different way may be better there.  On the Kitfox 4, I went 4" wider overall.  On my Avid MK IV, 3"  JImChuk

I have the front of my sling seat tied to a piece of 3/4"  OD aluminum tube.  That tube is tied in 3 or 4  places to the seat truss where there is a space to put the rope.  This probably helps with giving more leg room, as the seat ends up further back.  JImChuk

The seat truss is a weak spot on the Avids and Kitfoxes.  At the very least, you should infill as much of it as you can with plywood.   Being as how it's in the shop, and near a welder, this may be a better approach.  I had 3" wide x .040" steel available.  That's why it looks like it does.  I wouldn't surprise me if over half of the Avids have had some reconstruction on the seat truss.  JImChuk

Just looking at this thread now, I was telling someone about it this evening, and went and found it.  I now have 26.5 hrs on the plane, and it's working out just great.  Would have flown more, but was down south this winter for 3.5 months.   And no, the cowling still isn't painted.  I do really like the 3" wider fuselage.  Went flying with a friend last week.  We both are about 5'9" and 215 or so.  It wasn't cramped at all.  JImChuk

If anyone is interested in anything on this plane, the owner for sure wants to part it out.   65 HP engine with 6.2 hrs on it. $5000 plus shipping.  New last August.  STOL wings and flaperons $2500.  Give a holler if anything interests you.  Have a 55 HP Hirth that is at the shop being gone through, new seals and a complete inspection inside and out that will be up for sale soon.  That engine had about 240 hrs on it.  Supposed to have a TBO of 1000 hrs on these Hirths.  218-two five four- 24zero four.  JImChuk

Ya nice bike.  I bought a new DT 250 in 1972.  A long long time ago.  Have a 1977  Yamaha enduro 400  that I haven't ridden since I tried to keep up with my son and his friends.  They were 20, and I was a long way past that.  Thought I had broken every bone in my body.  I didn't, but the front fender is still broken.  Sitting in the shed.....Sad to get old.  Anyway,  nice bike Doug.  JImChuk

I would make the connection at the starter relay.  Big wire comes from battery to starter relay, small wire goes away from there but attaches to the same connection.  JImChuk

Turbo.  If the washout is the same in both wings, next time you fly, pull in just a little bit of flaperon.  Not sure why, but it might make the plane fly straight.  Like I said, I'm not sure why, but I've seen it work on other Avids.  JImChuk

Thanks for the reply Ed.  I found a helicoil set on ebay for $25 so I bought it.  The guy has a bunch of new old stock stuff that he is selling.  Hopefully it's not some Chinese junk.  I didn't want to make the holes any bigger than they already are.  JImChuk

Need a 10 MM helicoil installation kit
Hi guys.  I'm in need of a 10 MM x1.25 helicoil kit.  I have the inserts already.  Need the tap, and installation tool.  This is for the medium 10 MM threads.  (fine is 10x1.0MM, medium is 10x1.25MM, and course is 10x1.5MM)  Who here has bought a kit and never used it after that first time? I did manage to use a 5/16 twice, about 15 years apart. :-)   I'll rent it if you want it back.  Just don't want to spend $60 and never use it again.  Here is what I need.  Thanks,  JImChuk

Looks like the door bottoms are different than stock in your finished pictures.  Must have cut out the bottom of the door opining as well??   I was flying my Avid yesterday with 2 guys in it, and we both are about 5-9 and 215 or so.  Widening works!  JImChuk

Looks really nice TJay!  When do we get the first flight reports?  I went back and looked for pictures of your build, trying to see how you widened the area around the doors.  Never really did find any.  Must have looked in the wrong place.  JImChuk

  21. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic HOw to bend the gear

I've mentioned this before, and can't remember that I got a real good reason why it wouldn't help.  Why not tie the center of the cabane to the seat truss?  If the cabane can't go down, it can't pull in on the sides.  At least that's how I'm seeing it.   Take it one step further, and if your seat truss is already infilled with steel to stiffen it up, why not connect right to it with a couple of tabs and eliminate the cabane all together?  That's what the bungees pull down on in the standard gear, and if the truss is infilled, it will take a lot of stress.  Shoot me down, but please give me a good reason when you do it?  This doesn't really address the bending of the gear on this particular Kitfox, but it's related to the entire design.  JImChuk

I just bought some prop blades today, where the guy said make an offer.  I don't think he really knew what to ask.  I talked to him and got him to mention a price.  I told him I would take them for that price if he shipped them to me.  He said ok.  I think we are both happy.  Nothing like picking up a phone and speaking to people.  JImChuk

  25. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Trim tab on a Kitfox 4???

Well I bit the bullet and started cutting.  Figured I had to take care of the big holes the other guy drilled in the elevator anyway, so some more welding wouldn't hurt.  I can tack everything together and then I take it to a guy who tig welds it up for me.  Fabrication takes the longest anyway.  Just about ready to take to him.  Last pic is the other side of the elevator, but it could just as well have been a "before"  picture.   JImChuk
