  1. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Need a 10 MM helicoil installation kit

Hi Ed,  welcome back!  The site has been quiet with out you.   I got a couple of boxes of stuff with that Kitfox 4 from Texas, and although most of the stuff isn't of much use, this helicoil set was in there and looked like it's never been used.  Why didn't I find it before??  :-)  No doubt I saw it other times, but I didn't have any need for it then.  Oh well.... The rest of the story (as Paul Harvey would say)  Nobody came through with one I could borrow or buy, so I got one off of ebay for less than half what I expected to pay at Mc Master Carr.  Actual Helicoil brand and everything.  Did what I had to do with it, and that worked out fine.  Today I'm up in the hangar, and looking for some stuff for the Kitfox 4 I'm rebuilding.  What do I find in the box I'm looking in but a 10 MM 1.25 pitch thread helicoil set.  And not a cheap set, it has taps for bottoming holes as well as through holes.  Real good installation tool as well.  Ain't that the way it goes.  I probably will never need the one I bought again, and now I have 2 sets.  Why didn't I remember that was there before?  I'm sure I saw it at one time when I went through those boxes......Not sure if I'm happy that I found it or not  JImChuk

I know of one in Wisconsin on a Kitfox 4 that never flew before the builder passed.  (maybe you do to)  Can't say if it would have worked out or not.  To say the least, they weren't wildly popular.  That often says a lot in itself.  JImChuk

    Kitfox 1 for sale
Hi all,  Finally getting around to listing my Kitfox 1 for sale.  582 gray head, B gear box, 2 blade Warp drive taper tip prop.  Total time on aircraft is 375.  Engine was gone through at a local shop I've used on 8 or 9 engines before this one about 15 hrs ago.  I got this as a project, you can read about my posts about it here.  If you do a search of my name on youtube, you can see other videos of it as well.  $10,500.  Can probably add a trailer into the mix for a bit more. It is in annual till August 1 if my memory is correct.   I'm in northern Mn.  Listing it here first, then other places later on if need be.  218-two five four-24 zero four.   JImChuk
PS  conditional inspection is good till Sept. 1

Not sure how much of an expert I am, but thanks for the compliment.  Was just going to add some more info to the add that I forgot to mention.  Gross weight on this Kitfox 1 is 950 lb.  Empty weight is 494.  Bit over 450 useable load.  Also,  one 6 gallon wing tank, and 9 gallon header tank.  Oil injection, oil tank holds about 4 quarts.  Hydraulic brakes.  JImChuk

Kitfox 4 for sale on Barnstormers
Just saw this on barnstormers.  If Kitfox made them now, this would be probably 3 times as much in cost from them.  JImChuk

  11. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Size of bolts for flaperon hanger

You could also use an AN3 bolt, actually, I would think that would be better, smooth sides of a bolt, rather than the machine screw threads against the wood.  Your rib tail is 1/4" wide, the flaperon hangar adds maybe 3/32", 1/16" for a washer, That would make it a AN3-6A or maybe an AN3-7A and use a second washer if need be.  Current price in my Aircraft spruce catalog is 12 cents each.  I would measure just to make sure though.  I'm sitting here at my PC going from memory.  Do your measuring, and then check bolt's grip length.  Look at the link I posted.  JImChuk

Exhaust side of the pistons would show scuff marks from excessive EGTs, I believe.  Might be worth it to pull the exhaust manifold to have a peak.  Peace of mind afterwards then if everything looks good.  JImChuk

Forgot to mention in my other previous post.  I believe a Kitfox 4 is 9" longer between the wings and the tail then the earlier Kitfoxes.  That would change the way it flies to some extant I'm sure.   Maybe more to it then just the controls.  JImChuk

Looks like you were setting up a gliding approach.  Glad it didn't come to that.  What were your EGTs doing if you saw them?  JImChuk

Maybe if you built a new mount.  I thought it was a pain to see over the cowl, (like a Kitfox)  ((sorry Kitfox lovers)) so I built a cowl that didn't sit so high up and leave 4" or 5" of empty space above the engine and under the cowl.  JImChuk

It looked a lot like the Kitfox round cowl.  It was on my first Avid.  JImChuk

Who here has flown a Kitfox 3 and Kitfox 4 close enough together to say how much better the 4 flys then the 3?   I know the 4 has better controls in that it controls adverse yaw, but is it enough to change out all the controls?  My Avid Mk IV is much like a Kitfox 3, and it flys fine.  Now the Kitfox 4 wing maybe a different story.  Good STOL performance, plus faster then the earlier wing as well. Then all you would maybe need is the Kitfox 4 ribs, plus heavier drag tubes if those are different, leading edge plastic strip.  Maybe need to go with the 4 flaperons then as well.  Stuff you don't use from the 3 would be worth some $ to sell.  Just some random thoughts as I have a snack for lunch.  JImChuk

Nick,  not sure what your looking at it with but with my desktop PC, when I click on the red arrow, it goes to youtube and the video is already loaded.  You can enlarge it and go full screen like any other utube video.  Maybe a phone or something else will work differently then a PC.  ?? Thanks guys, actually it didn't want to idle down as slow as it should.  So it was pretty smooth at 2500, not so much at 2000.   I got it a good bit better when I got the carbs a bit more in sync.  But still a ways to go.  Trouble with these other projects is it keeps me from progressing on the Kitfox 4.  Put the trim tab in the elevator, and that's all so far.  JImChuk

  22. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Parting out A model Avid STOL wing

Any interest in anything from the plane?  Wings, flaperons, and lift struts are sold.  VSI and Alt gone as well.  The daughter wants to keep the fuselage and cowl, but the controls and tailfeathers are available.  He had an interesting set up for having a 5 gallon gas tank behind the seat.  Used a facet pump to pump into the main (header) tank.  Only way it interfered with anything is you had to unhook the flaperon control rod on that side to fold the wing.  He did it every time he went flying, so it wasn't much of an issue.  JImChuk

    It runs! HKS
Well I got it running.  Picked up this engine with thoughts of putting it on my Kitfox 1.  Not sure what I really will end up doing with it.  Hung if on the Kitfox 4 fuselage that I'm rebuilding in a very temporary fashion.  (how about that plywood firewall)  Have the wrong intake manifolds for this mount, that's why the carbs are mounted out so far.  (reversed the intake manifolds)  Got it to idle a bit better today, maybe it will end up on the work bench for a while  now while I get back to doing the Kitfox 4 rebuild.  Anyway it's nice to hear it run.  It will need a different exhaust system, and intake manifolds if I use it, but it seems like it would work ok on a light Kitfox or Avid.   Used my cheap old phone for the video so it's not real clear.  Sorry....    JImChuk

  24. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Solo bungee wrapping

I couldn't do the Avid taildragger type gear bungees by myself.  I did my Kitfox 1 alone though .  Get someone to help you.  Also, you should have left the one end without a loop and tie it when it's wrapped around the hook.  If you have an extra foot or so when you have the 7 wraps in place, the one guy can hold onto it while the other guy ties it off.  The other problem with tying off the second loop first is it gets hard to feed it though the hole as you get more  wraps in place.  Been there, done that, YMMV.,  JimChuk
