  1. EdMO,

I love it, how can you repaint a factory polished aircraft?!

So I met a gentleman at the Reno Air Races who is a CFI, affiliated with "Stick and Rudder", and just bought a factory new Kitfox Super Sport SLSA with a 914.  Starting this spring he's going to give instruction, hope to get my tail wheel rating then.  Keeping my pink shirt though.

  2. See AC 45-2D-1 attached. Table 3 is silly.  Its says 2" are ok on "antiques" but then there is a gotcha further down on table 3 talking about exceptions if you repaint you aircraft.  So legally, only orginal paint 2" numbers are legal?

  3. Good eye, and we are aware.  According to AC 45-2D the aircraft is an antique and can display 2 inch numbers... until its repainted.  We took a gamble and were never ramped as I dont think the local FSDO gave a rats behind about the most pathetic airplane on the ramp.  They were out to get the 135 operators for big fines.  Oh well, its the new owners issue now!

  4. Hello All,

My name is Joshua and I'm a wannabe Kitfox Flyer.

I'm an A&P currently employed at Dassault Aircraft Services (DAS) in Reno, NV.  We are a factory owned service center working on Falcon 50, 900, 2000, and 7Xs performing anything from changing a light bulb to heavy "C" check inspections.  I'm proud to be a member of our DAS team and extremely proud to be a part of the Dassault family and its rich aviation history.  Not trying to pick a fight, but I truly believe the Falcon is the finest business jet ever built, and our service center's quality continues that heritage.

Prior to working at DAS, I was employed by West Star Aviation in Grand Junction, CO.  There I worked my way up from an entry level tech to a CAT I Inspector and Citation Crew Lead.  I also have extensive experience on Hawker 700 thru 900 series aircraft as well as Cessna Conquests, Pilatus PC-7, and Gulfstream (IAI) G-200 (Galaxy).

My general aviation interested began at a young age thanks to my Dad.  Prior to my arrival in this world he owned and sold a Cessna 172 and 172XP.  He racked up several hundred hours just flying for the fun of it.  Throughout my childhood he'd rent various aircraft for weekend adventures, and also built or partially built a couple homebuilts including Protech PT-2, Cavalier, Christavia, and RV-9A.  When I was a freshman in high school he purchased a stock Cessna 150F and based at Grand Junction Regional Airport.  In 2002 I passed my check ride and earned my PPL.

Due to expense, college, career, marriage, kids, and that thing we call life I've only managed to log about 100 flight hours.  Things have stabilized and I've started to put money away each month for an airplane of my own.  I just want to fly, and to have an aircraft I can be proud of.  I'm not interested in anything too fancy, I don't want to travel in it, I just want a true two place that performs well in the high mountains of the Western US.

After months of research I've narrowed my list to two aircraft.  The Kitfox III powered by an 80hp 912, or a Kitfox IV 1200 powered by a 100hp 912s.  I would like to make some mods including but not limited to Grove Gear, Wide Body Mod, Plastic Fuel Tanks (ethanol complian), etc.

Thank you for letting me join your community, I look forward to learning something from each and everyone of you.

  5. I agree.  We flew a stock Cessna 150 for years in Western Colorado,  performance was poor and almost scary at times.  It would be nice to have good performance that we are confident with.

When you say twitchy, do you mean on tye ground or in the air?  Is this a wing loading thing or just lighter control forcese.  Would a more nose heavy 912 powered 3 with larger vertical improve it?

  6. I'm in the US, work at Reno Tahoe International Airport as an A&P.

I've determined the Kitfox 3 or 4 1200 meet my mission to fly me and my dad around (about 440lbs between the two of us).  I'm also interested in a Avid equivalent if the price it right.

Safety and performance are priority,  especially here at altitude.   I would prefer to stay at or near recommended gross weights.

  7. Jim,

Thank you for the reply.  If there wasn't an official gross weight increase to 1050, the orginal 911 makes for a poor two place for a couple male adults.  That would explain the used market price jump between the B and C.  Bummer, there is a B model in CA for dirt cheap, but if it doesnt meet my mission, its wasted money.

  8. I'm struggling to find original specs on the B model.  Most importantly: Gross Weight and Average Empty Weight.   Thanks!

  9. The back seat person cant be too tall, not much leg room. The way I figure it you would be out of balance before you could get to gross weight unless it was about a 350 pound pilot.200 pound in front and 200 pound in back, full fuel with 20lbs in storage sack behind rear seat and you just come in under most aft w&b.Unless you just like tandems like myself then you could probably haul more payload with a Avid or Kitfox, the side by side keeps the CG closer.

Good point. I've never flown or calculated the CG of a tandem. Thanks for the honest comments, these are important factors that the manufacturers tend to leave out. I think I might look more closely at the Kitfox, especially if I choose the part out the C-150. I can use the 0-200 in one of the newer Foxes. However, if the right deal in a sky raider comes along....

  10. The lightest one that I have seen was around 480,most people that I have talked to said they were over 500 with Jabirus in them.Mine came in at 507 with a 582,was hoping for a lighter number but I added a couple extra stringers and panel has built in radio, etc. Its real easy to add stuff but the weight adds up in a hurry. The 430 number seems awfully low but it may be do able.I have talked to guys with Kitfox 2,s and 3,s and they to were over 500.Not sure what weight the Avids come in at but they all have pretty much the same wing. Will be able to give a flight report in two weeks from today.Randy

That's not too bad. Even at 507 empty that gives you nearly 700lbs useful. Heck, that's two big guys, full fuel and baggage... beats the hell out of my Cessna 150F.
