  1. Hi guys,

I've been working off the old weight and balance done by the previous owner and i'd like to know how everyone here does the weight and balance on their Avids.

Can a few of you elaborate on your procedure. Everything from leveling to reference points and arms and well the whole process. Would be nice to know i'm doing it right or at least close to right.

What your CofG's and ranges for the MKIV? A picture or diagram would also be priceless.

    Thanks,

    Darcy

    Hi

all the details are section VIII chapter 7 of themanual

  2. thank's guys for dimensions and advices

I bought the tool in the morning and made the cables after

just have to put then on the plane (I've got a "tent and sleeping bag" week end with my daughter and 20 other pilots if the MTO is OK)

  3. Sounds like one we need to find..

I am damn thankful no one has my first half dozen landings in my brothers kit fox on video.. A state trooper was parked out at the airport watching planes buzzing around during his lunch break.. yes, he came over and talked to me when I pulled in to tie it down  Turns out he was just interested in what it was we were flying and he wanted to go up for a ride (just proves you dont need brains or good judgement to be a cop) :lmao: He has become a great friend and we spent alot of time flying around together till he moved out to Illiamna.

    :BC:

    Oh Oh

I've got the movie of my first landing (and take off) with the avid

It was the first time (for me) in a tail dragger

I wasn't allowed to fly the plane (I had to finish the bathroom first !!!!) and I was just training to drive the plane on the ground

but I pull the throttle on and...... it goes up !!! withstupid.gif

and the only thing to do was to ........... land ohmy.gif

the vid is in a bad quality but I wasn't supposed to fly this day

  4. Hi

one of my safety cable is HS (the nicopress wasn't well swaged)

I think the other nicopress have to be changed, and making new safety cable would be more easy to do

does one of you have the correct dimensions of this cable (it is 19.5" long but I need diameter of the cable and size of the fixture)

    thanks in advance

    MicheL

  5. Not that it is anything critical enough to worry about - But really wondering how the day and time are managed on this site:

I usually check posts and get "Today" first - However, when I post and come back in 2 hours, my post may say yesterday, and give a time that is hours different than when I posted it.

AGAIN, No big thing - Just confusing. What time zone is used? Zulu?

    Ed in MO

did you set "timezone" in your personal setting ?

  6. I am looking for a bigger diameter and width tailwheel than the hard rubber Maule tailwheel that came on my Kitfox.

I fly off of soft sand often and my current tailwheel leaves a trench dug in the sand.

Matco offers several choices of tailwheels from $250 to $650 and 3 and 1/2 inches wide to 5 inches wide.

Any experience or suggestions regarding these tailwheels for soft sand?

    Thanks Herman

  7. Do you have any specific gain data from your V.G's... any pics?

    -Robert-

    cargo (1).JPG

    37 VG on each side

    before I used to land @ 100-110 km/h

now it's 90-95 km/h (indicated speed, my speedo is false)

  8. I don't have TV !!!!

    TV eat peoples brain .............

I put the VG under the tail yesterday

now it's more easy to land at low speed with engine on idle (slow motion)

before the avid was like a flying "iron" now it is more light than before (don't have to use full trim)

  9. The guy I bought my FWF from has a thousand hours behind his in an Avid B model but he did a ton of messing with it to get it where he was happy with it and if Im not mistaken blew one up in the process. On the flip side Herman on here just removed his Jab and put a 582 back on because he was disappointed with the loss of STOL performance.

The jab is supposed to deliver 80 HP

I'm steel looking for the 15 last horses (and may be more)

The jab is a direct driver and the rotax is re-ducted so it could have more RPM and a larger propeller (turning slower)

the rotax is lighter than the jab

so at the end, using a jab in an avid is a non sense (and I don't talk about valve guide failure and other problems)

  10. Obviously I'm not communicating here. French? We're all aware of the noise in the background. Somebody with an Avid IV has worked through the issues on his second Jabiru motor. Someplace on the web is a lengthy thread of that analysis and work through.

Ahh Ha! I found it: http://www.zenith.aero/forum/topics/mr-smith-and-his-third-jabiru

    EB

the link is about the 6 cylinders jab

this engine has a lot of problems like gas flow in the middle cylinder and hover heating in the same one

but the main problem of the jab is the cylinder head : not enough aluminum, bad quality valve guides (with a hole !!!), no valve gasket and for some (bad numbers) a camshaft for solid lifters used with hydraulic lifters etc.......

  11. salut, essai de demander au gars de l'APA, vu qu'il y avait une version officielle de l'avid ulm "avidlight", il doit y avoir un manuel de vol associé.

question: c'est pour l'administration ou bien par curiosité?

I don't know what I'm realy looking for

what is written in chapter IX is a bit "too much"

something like 0° flaps in cross wind, 10° when no wind .....

landing and take of distances on the yahoogroups document are less than what I could do ......... (at cross weight)

for Manu : the document of the APA seems to be the one from my avid : values are false !

  12. I have two friends running the 4-cylinder jab motors. One on a 701 (mid 2000s) the other on a mk 4 Avid (unknown vintage). Neither have cooling issues. Both just purr smooth as can be behind wood props.

here is a "souvenir" of my first jab...........

no cooling problem on the plane.......

  13. Greetings Lads and Laddies:

Somewhere I saw a giant really informative thread on a Jabiru install by somebody who had some smarts. It was full of hints and kinks for working out the overheating issues. I'm now looking at a Jab powered airplane and want to reread the thread while paying attention.

I've used the search here and Team Kitfox and I can't find it.

Anybody know where I saw that??

    EB

    may be this one ?

I'm not sure Jabiru is the engine of the future

  14. Hi!

There are a couple of good examples of flight manuals you can customize in the files section of the Avid Fylye Yahoo group. I am one of the moderators over there and it is pretty easy to sign up if you aren't already. Hope this helps!

    Chris Bolkan

    Hi Chris

I'm on the yahoogroups mailing list

I know the 3 files I could download

but what I'm looking for is a "how to take off" and "how to land" section (speed, flaps .....)

    regards

    MicheL

  15. We all knew it was coming eventually...

    Hi

I think this engine is a non sense

what Ultralight pilot need is an ultralight injected engine

a 582 injection might be a better innovation than this too heavy 912

Avid's gross weight is 450 kg

French gross weight is 450 kg too

the more heavy is the engine the less gas or passenger weight you could bring.............

    sorry for my bad English

  16. ah bon, pourtant j'en suis membre, j'ai meme envoyé ma cotis et suis affilié apa sur ma licence ulm :/

    tu as raison

    a + :beerchug:

  18. Very nice, thanks for the pictures. How many layers did you use?

    -Robert-

    5 layers

    the panel's weight is 200 g

  19. Start with the tail first. Put them on Per JG's instructions. I used his as well on mine. The hardest part of the job was taking the time to ensure I had a good straight line for a reference point. I used some blue masking tape like the kind you use to mask off things when you paint. The second most time consuming part was sticking the 3M backing onto each individual VG. Get yourself a good shart EXACTO blade with a pointed tip. It makes it very easy to get the backing to peel off that way. You can actually stick the backing to all of them at home in your living room while watching TV. Finally take your time. They will come off if you mess up but they it's difficult and could mess up your paint job.

Here is a thread that you may find useful.

    I don't have TV !!!!

  20. Did you build this panel from scratch or did you have some sort of "blank" to work with. if so where did you get it? Which would be better fiberglass or aluminum?

    -Robert-

My first wish was to have an aluminum panel with a little box (the one at the bottom) for maps, sunglasses, pen ....

Machining aluminum is easy for me and I've never work with fiberglass

But the aluminum panel was too eavy

    so I made a fiberglass one !!
