  1. Hi Ed, Randy , sorry was gone for the weekend just noticed your reply, Ed I built the firewall with tips from Randy, I just cut out the flat piece of galvanized sheet metal then  riveted on the angled pieces round the outer edge. The smoker is my brothers wood boiler he build nothing illegal lol.Not sure what a Reveenooers are ,I'm a little slow so will have to google it

Randy , I got the engine with the rest of plane that was built by a fellow named Karlo Khunner, its a 2.58 gear reduction and the engine is supposed to be tweeked up to put out 100 hp or more. The gear drive actually has the engine oil running threw it at a reduced pressure. It sounding real good and luckly my brother is a mechanic so were getting all the bugs out. I learnt a good lesson a couple weeks ago while we were running up the engine in front of his shop ,the prop sucked up a rock and made a mess of the nickle plated tip :hammerhead: , nothing a couple hundred dollars couldnt fix though. Thanks again for all the help really appreciate it

  2. Hi Ed if you type in the ORATEX600 in your search baror google there is a ton of information that pops up, some guy cover his super cub in and figured the cost to be around $9000 . Not sure what the noemal cost of covering a complete plane is but sounds like alot less labour and was saying 20- 30% lighter. Sounds interesting

  3.  Hey Chris, I keep thinking another month or so and I should be flying my avid plus, but seems to be always a month away, being self employed doesnt leave me much time to work on it and I also built  a cedar kayak that I like to use as much as possible and our summers seem so short but I atleast I have a flying kitfox to get my fix.I tryed to attach some pics but forgot how to resize them hope there not to large

  4. I would love to make it down there and fly with you guys but wont be this year I dont think, still pluggin away on the fat avid which carries alot more fuel than the kitfox, Im not sure  what we need to cross the border ,my flying buddy flew a 701 zenair all the way back from Florida to B.C. so he will have it figured out.Hopeing to do alot more long distance travel once the avid is flying hopefully sometime this summer

  5. LOL, figured I might need them someday if I ever finish one of these planes! beerchug.gif

Hi Doug thanks alot for the manual info, the model C with the subaru should be close to the same numbers as my fat Avid, I made a copy for refence. I got the kit fox 5 cowl fitted onto the avid and it looks pretty good, I tryed to upload a few pics but they came from my iphone and didn't like that format i guess. Hopefully sometimes this spring or early summer it will be tearing up the sky.

  6. Hi Willis!

Nice to hear from you! The doors on this plane are lexan window and metal bottom. I plan to replace the metal with plastic like I did on my two other Avids. There's just too much visibility lost with the metal door bottoms. i don't think you can do it in one piece. I've always done the bottom and a second piece for the top which overlays the bottom just like if it was made of metal. Matter of fact, I've just taken the metal bottoms off and copied them out of plastic and put it back together.

    Chris

Thanks Chris,I kinda thought it needed to be two pieces, did you post any pictures of the avid plus yet

  7. Well, After a ton of looking, pondering, measuring and ciphering, I ordered cables. I can't remember the exact part numbers but will post the part numbers if they work right. I ended up going with CableCraft. I chose the Low Friction cable. It's one of the choices you can make based upon application. The cables I ordered have a 60 LB compression or column working rating in a 4 inch throw which is what I ended up going with. This compression or push rating seems to be about twice that of competitors like Teleflex. It looks like a 4 inch throw will work correctly with all of the original bracketry welded on by Airdaile or whoever made this particular fuselage. Cables should be here tomorrow and I will report back with photos and exact part numbers if it all works out. Here's hoping!......

    Chris

    Hi Chris,

Nice to here you join the fat guys, it's Willis here the guy you ship the kitfox cowl to modify for my fat avid, been slowly plugging away on it with with a bit of luck should be flying it this winter I hope , just getting to the cables and it looks like I will have to build the same attachment as Randy did on mine to lower them down to connect to the flapper on horns.

I finally got back on the site on my iPad , the PC won't let me get on this site for some reason. . I don't want to hijack your thread but could you tell me if you have the full lexan doors if there done in two pieces, I don't see how it would form nicely in one piece even if you can heat it.

    Thanks

  8. I use the PC680 in mine and it starts it just great in the summer but I have had issues in the -20 winter that I think I finally figured out is the master solonoid rather than the battery. The solonoid does not like to connect oin the cold temps. I don't know if there is an internal lube or if it freezes but it will not trip. It has even done this to me when I land and shut it down just for a short time. I have been carrying a jumper battery with me and when I resart it with the jumper battery the voltage fluctuates pretty wildly for some time and then it will just settles and holds a steady voltage. I am sure that is when the solonoid finally trips and makes the connection to the battery. I will either have to try a different solonoid or will just insert an air activated MyCoal heat pak in on the solonoid when I fly in the winter. I still will pack the jumper battery with me in the winter until I am sure.

Thanks for the reply Randy ,I am also trying to fine out about going with a lithium battery haven't got a model or price yet for it. Hope you figure out that gremblin in the solinoid :beerchug:

  9. The PC 680 should do fine for your suby. It stars 032 and 0470 engines all day long up here in the winter. Most of the guys that have gone to the firewall mounted batteries in C-180/185 use the 680 as well as 90% of the cub drivers I know up here.

I flew a PA-12 last week that has a 680 in it and did not have any issues starting it.

    :BC:

Perfect, thanks for the reply guys , I'm not exactly sure were its going to end up yet but want to get a decent battery to start with

  10. I was wondering what size ( cranking amps) and type of battery you guys would recommend for my avid with the the ea81 soob in it,probaly be flying in some -20 C temps in the winter time, thanks for any input.

  11. Hi Mark , I am also working on an Avid + that has a soob in it, although things have really slowed down on it threw the summer , I'm hoping to get back on it as the weather turns ugly. These guys on here are a great help with tons of info. Post some pictures when you get a chance

    Willis

  12. Hi Ed,is the red light for a tripped breaker in addition to a voltmeter gauge,I don't have a volt meter gauge in my panel but was told I should put one in but probably should have both?We are going with the cessana type mmaster switch you recommended ,thanks for all the info

  13. Thanks Randy and Ed for the help , I just ask the questions and my brother kinda figures out the technical stuff.Ed my engine was built by a fellow named Karlo Khunner ,its a gear reduction drive and I am using a TBI-40 throttle body injection from rotec, the fuel pump is a facet ,wish I could tell you more but my D.C. wirng skills really suck, can handle any A.C probs but not much ac stuff on planes :hammerhead: :hammerhead:

  14. Just getting ready to wire the panel on my avid with the ea81 and looking for some help. Luckly my brother is a mechanic but what we want to know is the master switch better to be mechanical or electrical and do you switch the positive or the negative, so we can still run hot to ignition and fuel, is this correct?

    Thanks for any input

  15. Actually, it was pretty fun reliving the moment too. Here's a little more of the story. :)

That town was a D-U-M-P and the people true idiots. It was a very long and painful two weeks that just couldn't end fast enough. When the time came, I ended up sneaking out of town under cover of darkness so I could make one last stop on my way out. Figured that jackass of a boyfriend owed me more than his girlfriend after taking a shot at me, and I knew his hopped up Camaro was parked down at the garage. So I hung a couple pair of his GF's panties on the rear view mirror along with a thank you note for his gracious hospitality. But I wasn't quite finished yet. Oh no, no, no...

Now if you looked close in the pics and know your old Chevy history, maybe you noticed the original, stock Chevy 265 V8 still in the engine bay. Your eagle eyes would also be right in noticing that Chevy did not offer an oem tri-power option for what essentially was a truck engine in the day. Let's just say, that manifold was a very nice after-market add-on I acquired thru barter. I only wish I could have seen that fooker's face when he went to start his car the next day, found my parting gifts and opened the hood only to realize the intake manifold and carbs were missing off his pride and joy.

    :nutkick:

:lmao: I can understand why you were a little leary with the original call now, probably glad it wasn't the boyfriend finally hunting you down,6 pack for a six pack seems fair, nice car but awesome adventure :BC:

  16. Very cool pics and beautiful country Willis. How long of a trip was it and what elevation is it where you landed?

Thanks Doug and Randy,We kinda cheated on the camp since my flying buddy had a key to a cabin,I was pretty happy about that since there was huge piles of Bear and moose droppings evey 50 feet or so :shitfan:

The strip was only around 3500 ft about 1000 ft above the lake so we had to hike down to the cabin,(were all the bear shit was )very beautiful country about 1 hr and 20 minutes from my place.

P.S. Got the soob running last night for the first time since I bought the fat avid project, man did it sound mean ,can't wait to get that bird in the air hopefully by fall.

  17. Went for a cool overnight trip last weekend on Quenel lake B.C. and snapped a few pics, wish I would got a picture of the mountain strip but my hands were full for the first time in there
